Killing Floor, originally a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, is now a full retail game developed by Tripwire Interactive. They're the same team responsible for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. In the mod, and now retail game, you stave off hordes of terrifying undead, getting more money each wave to buy better equipment. The atmosphere and level design are gritty and bleak, with each wave forcing you to move quickly through the ruined sewers and buildings and find the perfect spot to set up your defense.
The game is now available for purchase and is currently 50% off on Steam for a price of 9.99 USD.

I love L4D, but there really only is one gun in the game and it's the auto shotty. I prefer a little more variety in my zombie genocide simulations.
it's not actually a floor
it's more of a grate that allows materials to sluice through so it can be collected and exported
Seriously though, this looks pretty great. Can't wait to check it out.
From what I've heard, gameplay seems to be radically different from L4D - it's much closer to that game's survival mode, in that you're confined within a defined location and have to deal with incoming waves of mutants. You can either keep on the move in a close-knit group to avoid getting pinned down, or hole up in a good spot and make it as difficult as possible for enemies to get to you. Hopefully this variety of approaches, combined with having a dedicated SDK at release and a large existing fanbase, will mean a stready stream of new content right from the outset!
I think co-op is going to be the next big-thing in online multiplayer, I really do. Versus modes only appeal to a small percentage of people who are willing to invest the time and effort to learn strategies and reach a decent skill level - all I ever really wanted to do was kill some baddies with friends. Lord only knows why more developers haven't included simple co-op for single-player modes in their PC releases.
I don't know how different the retail version will be, aside from visually being a great deal better, but in the early release of the mod it was basically as you described. You had these tight and gritty maps where wave after wave would come after you. It would start off small. As you dispatched one group, you'd have a respite before a larger would one spawn. In between that time you could use the money you earned to buy better equipment. It sounds like the retail version takes things a step further, allowing you to weld doors and so forth.
I'm looking forward to seeing how different it plays. The early release of the mod was fantastic and tense fun. Like I wrote in the OP, my heart would be thumping in my chest when the numbers got large enough or when we had to hunt down the remaining zombies/mutants before we could spawn another wave. It was particularly terrifying when we split up. I hope we can get a dedicated group like we have with L4D to play this. The mod did terror quite well, a feeling I don't necessarily get when playing L4D.
This is exactly what I thought of as well. What a brilliant episode that was.
On-topic, uh, this looks cool.
Perhaps we should create a Steam group or a list of players I can keep in the OP? The original mod was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to playing the retail version with you fine folks. Hopefully we can get a few more people interested.
Its a great game, reminds me a lot of L4D survival mode.
It's the same with Monster Island. It's actually more of a peninsula. And Lollipop Island also has monsters, but they're smaller.
I might get this, but seeing how I barely play L4D as it is I'm doubtful.
A small and pitiful one, but a wang nonetheless.
Also, so we can compile them in the op, Steam Id:

The video mentioned purchasing weapons I think, ill look at in a bit to confirm.
EDIT: Well, it thought it did, seems it dosent.
EDIT: I imagine it's purchasing stuff at game start and between rounds - buying weapons but then having to look about for them around the place just doesn't click.
The two do play quite differently, and Killing Floor has been out as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 since 2005. Like I said above, though, the mod actually gave me quite an adrenaline rush and freaked me out numerous times. It kept me on edge. Left 4 Dead never really did that for me. I love both, however, and there's no reason why we can't have more than one zombie game. The more multiplayer zombie games the better! The visual style and atmosphere of the two are very different, in any case.
In the mod (I don't believe the retail version will be much different), enemies spawn in waves which then proceed to hunt you. When you kill a wave, another wave will soon spawn with greater numbers and more difficult enemies. Killing them rewards you points you can spend at a merchant in the map, and the amount of points you earn depends on how difficult the enemy killed was.
Jaramr and I are actually downloading the mod right now, and it'll be neat to see how different the retail version will be. Killing Floor 2.5 is 498 MB, while the retail version is over 2 GB.
finally
Looks like the best of both worlds for aquiring weapons - between waves you can either scrounge around for weapons, or risk a more dangerous but rewarding visit to the trader to buy some. Really liking the sound of boss monsters, too!
I hope Killing Floor does a better job.
Will wait for a demo/free weekend as well, but definitely looks fun
I'm tempted to buy it now because of the discount.
Discounts is always tempting but for these kind of game, I will wait for the word on how the community work.
Yeah the gameplay could be awesome but unless it has a decent online community / easy way to people with people, it will suck.
Still, $15....
Started and finished! I can't wait for the 14th to arrive now. I also put up some new screenshots in the OP, if you're interested. I'm tempted to make a PA Steam group for this game, although the buzz here doesn't seem to be high. Come on, guys! This is a top selling game on Steam right now!
When I grow up, I want to go to Bovine University!
I hope this plays like I want it to..
My fantasy game is a mash up up Rainbow six GTA dead rising
Give me the control and weapons of rainbow six, with the city of gta and the mass zombies and different weapons of dead rising and i'd be a happy camper..oh and it has to be coop.

hit me up for good zombie killins.
Phew I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw the Simpsons quote in there. :P
Also: Just make that PA group! Once they see how much fun we're having they'll be begging to join up too! :P
Have checked it out and it definitely looks interesting.
