Pirates! In space! (Rogue Galaxy)

Now, I'd never heard of this until I just happened to come across it earlier today on IGN's front page.

It's an RPG from the makers of Dragon Quest VIII, and it looks bitchin'

IGN page: http://ps2.ign.com/objects/729/729765.html

Gamespot page: http://uk.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/roguegalaxy/index.html?q=rogue%20galaxy

I really like the idea of seamless battle screens (Think Chrono Trigger style battles), the sorta-cell shaded graphics, and the action based battle mechanic.

There are apparently a number of different worlds to visit during your quest, which hopefully means that the game will be huge.

For some reason, this RPG has me really excited. Discuss.

If it isnt turn based, and more action oriented, ala Tales of Symphonia, I think it could be a lot of fun.

IGN has the launch date set at Janary 30th 2007, whereas Amazon.com has the launch date listed as March 31st 2007. I would be more inclined to trust IGN, but they also have the Europe release date set as September 30th 2006, when we all know that such an awesome game will never get released over here.

IGN has 15 minutes of video up. It's action based, like ToS, but the battles are based in the game world that you're running around in, not in a separate screen.

Also, another fantastic thing this RPG has: When the "mysterious but awesomely powerful dude" steps in to help you out, he's actually powerful (He's at level 20 when you're at level 2). Unlike in Tales Of Symphonia where when Kratos steps in to help you, he's only like level 5 or something stupid.

I love how the IGN guy got his ass handed to him by Giants.

Oh, that's funny. I heard the game is really hard at the start.

Wait, wait, wait... I just watched the video. Something's wrong. Seriously wrong.

It's a JRPG, yet the main character sounds like a man. What's more, he looks quasi-manly?

Are we going to stand for this? I, for one, am not. I demand the protagonist be changed to a 13 year old boy that looks like he shares a wardrobe with his sister!

[spoiler:b1803f2849]Lies. It's nice to see a console JRPG that isn't full of that bishounen bullshit.[/spoiler:b1803f2849]

I don't know what Dark Cloud 2 is, because I only got a PS2 a couple of months ago. I'm still new to the system, damn it!

I found it kind of funny that the character is running across town, and comes across a bridge that's been destroyed. Now, usually in an RPG, some NPC says "Sorry, the bridge is out! You'll have to stay in this low-level area and finish some bullshit quest before we can get it up again!"

But the main character just jumps off one side of the bridge, swims across, and climbs up the other side. Leads me to wonder why the bridge is out in the first place if you can just cross by swimming.

EDIT: Also, this game appears to have fantastic voice acting.

Dark Cloud 2 was amazing. Blew the first game out of the water. Which was amusing in itself. Has about the same art style, and silly humor this game seems to portray. (actual pirate ships in space? zomg. no way.)
I cry that you don't even know what it is though...

And didn't you play Oregan Trail!? There's so many ways to cross a river.

It's been in localization hell for almost a year I think. The Japanese devs added a whole new planet that wasn't in the Japanese version, as well as tweaks to the battle system and other fixes.

You only load once per play session. Everything after that streams. Costume changes are in, tons of weapons. Everyone has melee and ranged weapons, and they're all unique to the character. Jaster has pistols, while Zegram has shuriken, etc.

I've been looking forward to this since it was announced in Japan. I can't wait.

Here are some Japanese videos from the JP site: http://www.level5.co.jp/products/new/roguegalaxy/movie/tgs2005.html#

Click around the rest of the site to see weapons and costumes and a ton of screens.

Yeah in one interview, it's amusing to find out that the US release is considered by the devs to be the "complete" game.
Double-sided DVD PS2 games.. FTW? Silly Japanese and their one-sided game. Hoho.

The voice was really familiar, until I realized it's Will Friedle (Boy Meets World, Batman Beyond, Advent Rising.) I always liked his voice acting. The rest sounds really well done too.

gamestop/ebgames has demos of this in stores. i went in looking for a wii one day and saw this on the counter and um...snatched one, i don't know if they are just given out or if one must complete in instore quest to obtain it (such as preordering said game). The game world is so lush, awesome. The fact that there are many planets to explore along with their own well, everything...it is a whole new world, that just makes me think of a Skies of Arcadia/Phantasy Star hybrid.

I think it was for pre-orders as that's how my friend got his but pre-ordering for demos seems to vary between stores. Anyway, I only heard about the game when my friend got that demo and after watching, I decided I needed it. The only problem with the demo is the exploration one is timed. Timers should not be in demos you take home, only on kiosks. Take-home demos just need to stop at a certain point.

The story could be absolute shit, and you'd still buy it.

Not really. If the story sucks, that probably means the pirate ships in space will suck. Thus defeating the totally badass idea of pirate ships in space.

However, I think it looks shit-hot.

Seriously now, I've been looking forward to this game ever since some videogame magazine did a small article on it, and that was (I think) around the same time KHII came out.

It looks really good, it's from the makers of Dragon Quest VIII and Dark Cloud 2, two of my favorite games, so that gives me high hopes, and all the trailers i've seen sofar look great.

It's got a real-time battle system, so hopefully it won't be as boring as FFXII's is turning out to be. Plus, it's pirates in space!

All in all, I'll be in line the day it comes out to get it.
