Are they pajama pant bottoms? Ha!

Just a suggestion, but try just defining the shadows on the crystals on the gloves. Defining the entire outline has flattened out the hand completely. This is by far one of your stronger sketches WCK, I can see you've taken your time with it.

Cheers mate. Haha. They are Peter Pan pajamas. I didnt look for references from the movie, so i'll still need to fix them up. I agree with the hand. It does look rather flat. Time to refine

Another sketch from the National Gallery. Frustrated at the too-big head and compacted torso, but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it.

I loaded the sprite into the game and tested it on the Xbox today. Sadly, it's virtually unrecognizeable. The duster becomes a big black shape, as do the pants below the knee. So I figured I'd use this as an opportunity to redesign the character.

Unfortunately, from what I've seen in "authentic" online clothing stores and the covers of Louis L'amour novels, there simply wasn't a lot of variation in frontier clothing. I came up with a new design that A) should solve the visibility issue and B) precludes the need to animate a long flapping coat during run/jump animations.

Unfortunately it's still a bit generic, but there isn't really anything special about this guy, so I'm not really sure what to emphasize.

I'd concur that it is amazing, in some respect. The execution, and overall style is gorgeous, but the anatomy is way off. And I don't just mean in terms of head size. Even if you adjusted the scale of the head, the rest of the body is still disproportional, and the perspective of the limbs is still measurably off.

Apart from the obvious anatomical issues, you've probably got something really solid starting to emerge.

Thanks Mustang yeah.. I have to say I think that photo study I did helped me so much. I have never really 'zoomed in' on the image to the extent i could put serious detail in. Now I have started to and I can see the results are completely more realistic. Im also noticing that zooming out a long way so its a thumbnail can show you when depth perspective is off. If it looks realistic as a thumbnail you know your lighting and depth is correct.. ahh Im still learning and I'm lovin it :D Im not happy with the eyes yet though> I just cant get them to look scarey and give them depth. I tried to push them back into the babies head a little using some shadow but it started to make it look older. I will give it a rest and come back to it tomorrow :) If i can keep my hands off it lol...

Leggs, the photo of the hand/palm looks cool. Id say your best piece yet. Which is odd, because i didnt ever think a picture of a baby could be so cool. Have you ever seen Pet Cemetary?

Actually it does look that way. But seeing how well the other hand is rendered, my guess is that it's just poor placement.

EDIT: While im here, ill post an update. Decided to change the peace sign to him giving the finger. Just for, you know, 'LOLS'

    and....
this doodle is for another article for the same editorial illustrations assignment. This one is for an article about how Disney are scouting for locations in South Australia to film John Carter of mars.
my idea is that ill do a picture, in a similar style to that of the comics. ill have a mars scenery landscpae, but i'll insert structures recognisable (to those living anyway) as being Adelaide. Ive included the Hyatt hotel, Westpac house,Festival Theatew and the river Torrens. Its not georgraphically correct, and its not supposed to be either. i just want it recognisable as adelaide.

try to ditch the anime pointy-hair.

also, i'd avoid the red and blue scheme if you're going with overalls since it'll pull a fairly strong mario look.

Also, you might want to play around with chaps or a sergio leone style pancho when it comes to the character design. You really need something that makes him read as 'distinct protagonist' and not 'generic cowboy'

Hadn't thought about the color scheme. I probably will change that.

I kept looking around for ideas on how to change his outfit, but the fact remains that men's frontier fashion didn't really vary much unless the person had money. Most of the variation in non-fantasy western entertainment has been in giving the character a distinct face. I know you'd probably prefer this go in a less cartoony direction, but I have to make it recognizable in sprite form.

    sketchsprite2.png

Pulled up the knees a bit, but I've still got to break myself of the habit of turning his back leg away from the camera.

that's looking better. I'd ditch the pupils, and go back to the squinty eyes. It's also not the cartoony aspect that I don't dig. It's that I really hate the fusion of wild west and anime. The hair and to a lesser extent, the mouth in the old design was doing it.

This one's starting to look better. I like the scar across the bridge of the nose, and the addition of masculine facial hair really helps.

Also, don't forget the inch or two for the soles of his boots. You're cropping it too closely now.

damn. she's looking the fuck out of something.

Delz, I also dug what you had going on with the jacket earlier. A distinct design on it could help, and it does look cool to have it flap and shit.

If you're having problems with the colors on your tv, your settings may be shit as well. Getting any tv's color to look even remotely close to right is a total bitch.
