Oh, and I still maintain that Phantom has the best OP of the season. You Eden of the East guys can suck it.

    Agreed

East of Eden's OP seems suspiciously like a car commercial, for something like a Scion or another boxy, unattractive automobile.

That being said, I'm far more concerned about a series' entertainment value than its cool OP. Cool OPs are great, but they're just that. They can't save shows like Gundam Wing.

    *gasp*

So it's basically exactly like Yu-Gi-Oh.

Did you notice that in episode 7
the arm twitch Zwei made as he was attempting to escape from Ein on his hands and knees was the same as the arm motion in the OP?

Hmm, you're right! Nice catch. Watching the OP again now, who are all these other girls who have yet to be introduced? We are already 7 episodes in on a show that will supposedly last 13. There'll be a second season of this if these girls aren't introduced yet, I'm sure.

    Eden of the East 6:
Huhwaa? Let me get this straight. Eden of the East is a group of college graduates who developed an image recognition program that can somehow give relevant information on things in the image to the user. And this project stopped because Saki wants to leave and find a job, but Akira decides to help them so that they can help him regain his memories (somehow).

And all through this, Oosugi is trapped in a serial killer's pad worrying that his Johnny gon' get cut off...

    Strange!

So, how much of a difference is there between the Welcome to NHK anime and manga? I'm grinding the former, Phantom(not horribly original, but I liked Madlax and Noir. It seems to be like those but actually good) and the most recent Nagima(when does the pew pew kick in, or is that just the manga?).

Edit: It's an odd show. Like, I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to feel about it. It's kinda odd. Like, I scoffed a little at 12 gigs of porn, until I realized it was via http(rather than bit torrent) and consisted of stills. And I assumed he'd spywared his computer to hell rather than filling up the HDD.

That's kinda an strange reaction, and I'm not even going to talk about episode 8, short of saying it made me fell kinda bad about not calling my mom last sunday, which wasn't totally unrelated to my current joblessness.

Like, I haven't seen a show that's made me feel so bad about vaguely identifying with a character since I stopped watching Criminal Minds when Patinkin left.

About 4 months ago someone told me that since I loved Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo so much, I should watch Gurren Lagann. Over-top-badassery I was promised.

So I acquired the series and watched the first three episodes, and then just stopped. I didn't dislike the show. I just... stopped. Didn't hook me enough.

On a whim the other day I started watching it again.

I'm on episode 24 right now. It's amazing. So thanks to whomever originally suggested it.

However, I know it's going to be over soon, and now I face the despairing notion that I will have nothing new to watch. The story will be finished. This does indeed sadden me.

So I come again before you all, to your court, and I ask, "What else is good?"

It's quite, quite daunting to imagine trying to find the good stuff when shows like Gurren Lagann can just show up in April, out of nowhere, and be completely over by September.

It's actually quite admirable that Japan does this, and the shows seem of significantly higher quality then the hyper-serialized and extended entertainment Westerners enjoy.

However, it also means a lot more to sift through.

So.... what should I do next?

Catching up with Phantom. I accidentally watch it out of order, 3 - 5 - 4. Nothing ruined though. Did anyone else laugh at episode 4 a bit? The music was a little out of place. Epic window shopping! Epic walking around the mall! Epic waiting by the fountain!

If you are a talking about one of the Negima animes, they are all terrible, and you should just read the manga and not bother with them.

EDIT: Or wait, are we talking about the newest series they were supposed to be making? Because I don't know anything about that one.

EDIT EDIT: If it is that one, and IIRC that it's supposed to be about Mahorafest, the answer to your question should be "once the Budokai starts".

The differences lie mostly in the later halves of the anime and manga. The endings are completely different. Some characters get more development in the manga (or sometimes different paths of development) than in the anime where they don't play as much of a role. The general tone in the manga is a lot more wacky and light hearted than the anime which features a more realistic tone in comparison.

I thought the presentation they had in the anime was more serious and the anime followed the novel's ending which was quite a bit more serious than the wacky one the manga pulled out.

I also forgot to mention that Misaki's character is quite different by the end of it all due to the manga kind of going about its own thing rather than following the novel. She's actually lot crazier in the manga because of it.

Watching the latest Baccano DVD from Funi, there was a trailer for something called Romeo x Juliet. As a Shakespeare fan, I'm always up for some good contemporary adaptations of the classical plays, especially Romeo and Juliet. However, knowing anime (and Japan), they probably changed the story a whole lot to fit in some plot about aliens or something. To those who have watched it, if any, is this true? If it is, is it still a good story anyway?

Also, holy shit, there was also a trailer for something called Last Exile and it is steampunk with airships, dirigibles, daring feats of air combat and oneupsmanship. At least that's the feel I'm getting. I'm a sucker for anything steampunk, and the visual style and technical design at least seems to be evoking that feel quite nicely. Is the story any good?

    Plot

In the fantastical aeropolis of Neo Verona, the noble house of Capulet had ruled peacefully for generations - until fourteen years ago, when the ancient grudge held by the rival house of Montague led to a mutiny, and the Capulets were deposed and all wiped out in a bloody coup. Now, as Neo Verona suffers under the thrall of its new masters, the fates of two star crossed lovers are about to become tragically entwined... As the citizens of the city suffer, the Capulet clan struggles to strike a blow against their enemies, and the Montagues tighten their grasp on power, an unlikely love blossoms between Romeo and Juliet - but in the face of such adversity, this ill-fated love may be doomed from the outset. Triumph or tragedy; only fate knows what awaits Romeo and Juliet...
A young girl, Juliet, is the only member of her family to escape the massacre of the Capulet family at the hands of Leontes Montague. Fourteen years later, Lord Montague rules the land of Neo-Verona with an iron-fist as Juliet helps the common folk in a Robin Hood-like fashion, and Romeo Montague protests his father's cruelty. Juliet and Romeo meet by coincidence at the Rose Ball and fall in love at first sight. However, when Juliet turns sixteen and learns the truth of her past that has been hidden from her for fourteen years, her love becomes conflicted between revolution and devotion.
    [edit]Notes
Neo Verona (ネオ・ヴェローナ Neo・Verōna?) - An aerial city in which the story is set.
Ryūba (竜馬 ?, Dragon Horse) - A winged horse with the tail of a dragon, similar to the Pegasus. Ryūba are capable of transporting people on their backs and are handled using reins in the same way as normal horses. More than a means of transportation, winged ryūba can be considered a symbol of status as they are not something that common folk can own, and are only seen ridden by members of the aristocracy or nobility. Ryūba with degenerated wings, thus unable to fly, are often owned by commoners.
Great Tree Escalus (大樹エスカラス Taiki Esukarasu?) - A huge and enchanted tree inside the Montague's castle, which is the remaining of a pair of trees that gives support to Neo Verona. According to its caretaker, a woman named Ophelia, it gives blessings to people, but it also weakens if the persons don't have love in their hearts. When it is thriving, it drops shining fruit from its branches. Since it has been in Montague's care, the tree has noticeably begun to wither. It is likely named after Prince Escalus from Shakespeare's play.
Carabinieri - The Military Police of Neo Verona. The name is the same as the true Carabinieri of Italy.

Romeo x Juliet does take a great amount of liberties with the story. Though obviously some of the basics are still there. I watched about half of it back when it was airing. It was alright, I only really stopped because I had some computer problems at the time.

So I suppose I'd say go for it if you like Fantasy.

Let me put it this way:

You like steampunk and you haven't seen Last Exile? You're banned until you do. It's got one of the best stories in an anime I've seen, setting be damned. The characters are great and varied, the animation is top notch, and the story is just seventeen kinds of awesome. Also it has:

It's pretty not good. I love the hell out of Shakespeare. I think an accurate telling of his works could be groundbreaking, and would probably finance one if I had the money. This isn't that. I only watched 4 or so episodes, but it really wasn't anything like spectacular. Like, it's not good.

It's very pretty. Many of the characters are compelling. The setting is pretty amazing. Many parts of the story well told and there are many touching moments. The ending is retarded. I goes downhill rather sharply towards the end.

I liked Romeo x Juliet. IMHO, the changes are extensive but not really significant (ie the setting and a lot of side characters are different and also some elements of the plot, but it's true to the spirit of "star-crossed lovers who's families hate each other and everyone dies at the end" which is what Romeo and Juliet is really about). Some examples of things that got changed off the top of my head:

    1) It's now Neo Verona and is some kind of flying cloud city with Pegasuses and shit. Not really any stranger than Richard III with tanks.

    2) Juliet is now a Robin Hood-esque tom-boy swashbuckler. Which is awesome. If you like Three Musketeers style sword play, this show delivers.

    3) The Capulets are now the royal family who where overthrown by the Montagues and are in hiding so as not to get executed.

    4) Bunch of characters got changed radically, keeping only the name and their relationship to the title characters. The biggest example is probably Antonio, who is now Juliet's kid side-kick.

    5) Shakespeare is in it for some reason.

Conclusion: I would recommend it, but if you are OCD about changes compared to the original you will probably be too bothered by them to enjoy it.

EDIT: One way to describe it would be Romeo and Juliet meets Fire Emblem.

Meh. Last Exile is cool for like the first episode and then it slows down to a crawl and it takes ten or twenty episodes for shit to really pick up again. I'd say go ahead and watch it though.

Yeah, reading the Wiki article now, it seems that they even insert a few characters from other Shakespeare plays. I'm definitely not OC about changes to the original work, but looking at Antimatter's post, Escalus has become a tree and it's caretaker is Ophelia, and apparently Shakespeare is somehow in it?. I...don't know how I feel about that. I'll give it a shot for a few episodes I suppose.

I'll get Last Exile too while I'm at it. I'm not really going to be surprised if the end is shit on a stick, since most anime do tend to do that, so I guess all of us have developed some sort of inoculation to it. Steampunk is always nice though, and the visual style is so good. So I guess it can't hurt to try it.

This is kinda coming out of left field but why do all fast moving characters in anime let their arms flail behind them when they sprint? Ninjas, the baddies from Giant Robo, superhuman action types - when they're running as hard as they can, they let their arms go limp?

I don't see track and field runners do this until the last seconds of a race but I see this arm flailing repeated in a handful of Japanese cartoons. I don't get it.

So I was looking for a clip of one of the cool fight scenes from Romeo x Juliet, and I discovered something. I originally watched it fansubbed when it came out, but apparently it has the best english dub ever:

    check this shit out

That is some pretty hot shit. Always a fan of great English dubs. The only thing that would make it better is if it was in iambic pentatmeter. Also, Curio for some reason.

If they keep that mode of speech up for the entire thing, then I'm definitely gonna give it a shot.

EDIT: The document, cur. Loving it.

Wow, that is pretty impressive, there must have been a lot of work put behind translating it. I'm tempted to give it a viewing myself.

Huh, there wasn't a new Haruhi-chan this week.

Have they ended that, now that they're re-running the original Haruhi on TV?

Eh give it a shot. I don't really see too much of the high school comedy stuff on there. It's not as good as azumanga or anything, but it's pretty good.
