Yeah well, I don't really care either way, my poor taste joke aside as an atheist I think people can believe whatever the hell they want but I still think its stupid. So yeah, not marking Blasphemy Day, I didn't even know it existed.
Although this has an ostensibly positive message of "Free Speech," it seems to me it's more about going out in public and being a douche about religion. I'm not interested in making a special effort to shit on people's beliefs, even if I don't agree with them.
I had some proselytizers comes to my door yesterday and invite me to Bible study. I stood outside for a bit and talked to them about my views, reasons for disbelief in the New Testament (or Torah / Vedas / Qur'an) etc. My wife flipped her shit that they dare come and disturb us, but they were civil and respectful so I don't see a reason not to return the favor.
I agree with "let's not just go out and be a douche." But I would like to see this day modeled more like "Banned books week" at libraries and such.
I think there is merit to the idea of going out of our ways to showcase things that people try to censor. It provides negative reinforcement against people who try to censor stuff.

Part of me wants to engage in this merely because a 'religious hate' bill was one vote away from being passed over here. Which would encompass this. I mean it was always going to be one vote, a rather calculated move, but the fact that something like that was even proposed is shocking enough.

I may have inadvertently started a very early blasphemy day by trashing the philosophical contributions of a saint, without considering that as far as I know my professor could be catholic. It's too late to fix it. I electronically turned it in thirty minutes ago.
My difference with the author of this essay seems to lie in an assumption made about what it means for a thing to be philosophical. Inferring from his examples of what a “philosophical game” is, Lars Konzac seems to believe that for a thing to be philosophical, it must also be interesting. I would offer Thomas Aquinas' inclusion in typical PHIL101 courses as conclusive evidence to the contrary.
The day is meant primarily for free speech purposes rather than being a douche. It is mean to protest things such as that UN anti-blasphemy resolution and the anti-blasphemy laws in North Ireland.
There is a strange vein of thought in much of the world that the concept of religion is sacred, that to criticize religion is out of the bounds of reasonable behavior and it should not be allowed. That vein of thought is present especially in the US in a lot of ideologies. I know that to bring this up is really preaching to the choir for much of D&D.
You can be polite and rationally engage these people, which is the most common tactic. But sometimes it helps to give people a little goose now and then, I think.
For those people who complain about it being a douche tactic, have you ever said, in private or public "Fuck that" to something that is irrational and unreasonable? Why is it fine to say that about other concepts and beliefs, but to do this is to be a douche? If someone starts talking about Alien Astronauts as if they are real (not naming any names here), and I go "Fuck that", am I being a douche to that person? What about conspiracy theorists?
I'm curious about this. Being a douche is to be mean to a person or persons in my eyes. Blasphemy is a statement against no person, no people, not even a group of people, but to a concept. A rather common atheist saying is "Blasphemy is a victimless crime."
Seriously, why is "Fuck Xianity!" being a douche? I mean nothing towards the people themselves. I don't even know most of them. But the beliefs they follow definitely seem to me something to be criticized.
