Man, fuck Blasphemy Day.
ElJeffe on
I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.
Yeah well, I don't really care either way, my poor taste joke aside as an atheist I think people can believe whatever the hell they want but I still think its stupid. So yeah, not marking Blasphemy Day, I didn't even know it existed.
Although this has an ostensibly positive message of "Free Speech," it seems to me it's more about going out in public and being a douche about religion. I'm not interested in making a special effort to shit on people's beliefs, even if I don't agree with them.
I had some proselytizers comes to my door yesterday and invite me to Bible study. I stood outside for a bit and talked to them about my views, reasons for disbelief in the New Testament (or Torah / Vedas / Qur'an) etc. My wife flipped her shit that they dare come and disturb us, but they were civil and respectful so I don't see a reason not to return the favor.
I agree with "let's not just go out and be a douche." But I would like to see this day modeled more like "Banned books week" at libraries and such.
I think there is merit to the idea of going out of our ways to showcase things that people try to censor. It provides negative reinforcement against people who try to censor stuff.
I blasphemed the holy spirit quite some time ago. So I'm not adverse to marking this occasion. What can I do to ensure I'm disenfranchised from some other religions?
You know, this is a good question. What are some unforgivable trespasses in other religions? Do they even have those?
Are we talking about aside from abrahamic relgions here or what.
Whatever can get you permanently dammed/barred/etc in any religion.

I am a big fan of your viewpoints on things.
Third'd. I've got my beliefs just as everyone else has theirs. Discuss them, debate them, but don't be a douche.
Part of me wants to engage in this merely because a 'religious hate' bill was one vote away from being passed over here. Which would encompass this. I mean it was always going to be one vote, a rather calculated move, but the fact that something like that was even proposed is shocking enough.
The other part of me is playing the smallest violin.

Fourfth'd, if there was a general Be An Asshole Day I wouldn't observe that either. Who made this "official" anyway?
I've got some Cthulhu religious-type pamphlets saved on my computer that I got from the...er...internet. Always wanted to hand them out at a church or something but I'll be way too busy tomorrow and if I went so far as to print out enough I'd probably just leave them lying around for people to pick up.

Why? So people can fail at saying words that contain nothing but z's and x's?

Does returning a prayer request card the local cult shoved into my door jamb with "For infidels to stay the hell off my lawn" written in the box count as douchebaggery?
Ecoterrorism is actually the single largest terrorist threat at the moment. They don't usually kill people, but they blow up or set on fire very expensive things.
Can you pray for dudes not to knock on my door at too damn early o'clock in the morning trying to peddle their deity like a package of suspect steaks? If they could at least wait until noon to push their rank heresy, that'd be keen.

I may have inadvertently started a very early blasphemy day by trashing the philosophical contributions of a saint, without considering that as far as I know my professor could be catholic. It's too late to fix it. I electronically turned it in thirty minutes ago.
My difference with the author of this essay seems to lie in an assumption made about what it means for a thing to be philosophical. Inferring from his examples of what a “philosophical game” is, Lars Konzac seems to believe that for a thing to be philosophical, it must also be interesting. I would offer Thomas Aquinas' inclusion in typical PHIL101 courses as conclusive evidence to the contrary.
The day is meant primarily for free speech purposes rather than being a douche. It is mean to protest things such as that UN anti-blasphemy resolution and the anti-blasphemy laws in North Ireland.
There is a strange vein of thought in much of the world that the concept of religion is sacred, that to criticize religion is out of the bounds of reasonable behavior and it should not be allowed. That vein of thought is present especially in the US in a lot of ideologies. I know that to bring this up is really preaching to the choir for much of D&D.
You can be polite and rationally engage these people, which is the most common tactic. But sometimes it helps to give people a little goose now and then, I think.
For those people who complain about it being a douche tactic, have you ever said, in private or public "Fuck that" to something that is irrational and unreasonable? Why is it fine to say that about other concepts and beliefs, but to do this is to be a douche? If someone starts talking about Alien Astronauts as if they are real (not naming any names here), and I go "Fuck that", am I being a douche to that person? What about conspiracy theorists?
I'm curious about this. Being a douche is to be mean to a person or persons in my eyes. Blasphemy is a statement against no person, no people, not even a group of people, but to a concept. A rather common atheist saying is "Blasphemy is a victimless crime."
Seriously, why is "Fuck Xianity!" being a douche? I mean nothing towards the people themselves. I don't even know most of them. But the beliefs they follow definitely seem to me something to be criticized.

This reminds of my first forays into typing "asian porn" into GIS.
Sadly there were no japanese schoolgirls.
But rather a lot of what you just described.

Thread is now justified.
I declare today to be Not Any Particular Day Day.
Am I doing it right?
Uh-oh I accidentally deleted my signature. Uh-oh!!
"And when you die, you rot in a hole in the ground. Isn't that exciting?"

Jerk off in front of the Pope. That'll do it.

Haha, I'd forgotten completely about those silly laws of ours.
Now I'm definitely gonna listen to Marduk's Fuck Me Jesus.

I would be nice on Be An Asshole Day. I'm kind of an asshole like that.
Blasphemy! It's my birthday!

I see no reason for a holiday that I pretty much celebrate 24/7.
Also, your mom called me about Asshole day. She told me she didn't understand why people would celebrate it.
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat

I typed "furry" and "jesus" into Google Image Search and got this:
Well, I think its time for an inquisition.
Honest mistake, but eep.
