I don't know, maybe you've seen
this.
Apparently what happened is that some website wrote an article about some new login thing Facebook is doing. Somehow, this article ended up moving up the Google ranking until it was (one of?) the first result(s) when searching for "facebook login."
And now the comments section on the article is full of people who think they're on facebook's "new login page." It's page after page after page of people angry at Facebook for changing their login page to some new completely different thing.
These are people who don't know what the address bar is. They don't bookmark anything. When they want to login to Facebook, they just type "facebook login" into the address bar, and the browser automatically takes them to the Google results for that.
This shit is
fascinating to me. I sincerely had no idea people did this. None of the paradigms or metaphors in my head apply to this type of user.
So let's discuss this, or people who don't understand technology, or whatever. I just wanted to show this shit to other people.

pretty much every one of my female friends navigates the web by typing the website they want into the google searchbar and going from there
it's baffling; surely it wastes more time?
Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
i haven't read any of them but i can already tell that they will all be along the lines of THIS NEW THING SUCKS WHY CAN'T I LOG IN

of course it does
but its simple
And since I'm playing Bioshock I just want to eletrocute them all and drill them in the back in their confusion.
I didn't even realize at first what was going on, and actually had to have it explained to me
I couldn't even comprehend the cluelessness, and therefore I felt stupid.
I quickly realized this was like some kind of quantum level shit going on that someone else being so inept can make me feel so stupid and I got a headache
please jesus let this kill Facebook
this is so good
This just makes me realize the degree to which most of my world is not nearly as natural and obvious and intuitive as I feel like it is. Almost everything I do during a typical day is wholly incomprehensible to a lot of people in the world.
your = belonging to you
their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are
please why is everything so blue everywhere just let me log in to facebook
That's the thing, is that most of the people using my software are substantially smarter than I am.
I write shit for other programmers. Advanced programmers.
your = belonging to you
their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are
does
does this mean we're getting old
I get this every time I try to describe what I do to people who don't work in the tech industry.
"Well, you know what operating systems are, right?"
I should've learned something from all the years my Dad (also an engineer) couldn't describe his job to me.
like they do nothing else on a computer but facebook and other social networking sites
mostly they're sites I want to be able to get back to quickly
which i think is the very definition of a bookmark
how am I doing
I disagree
There's a difference between being ignorant of something unfamiliar and jumping to a moronic conclusion based on no information
I hadn't read any of the comments.

Most of my coworkers are 10-15 years older than me, I have to remember these sorts of things if I start talking about my first computer, ISP, etc.
"Oh, yeah, I remember our 286. 1989 sure was a long time ago!"
it's ok if they've got some questions, even if I think the questions are kind of dumb. it's sort of my job to answer them, no reason not to be polite about it. if only they would have the same reasoning most of the time.

Because, by and large, they don't need to.
your = belonging to you
their = belonging to them
there = not here
they're = they are
This is true. Framling's job is...I have no idea what he does all day. I've SEEN his computer at work, he's explained it to me, and I still don't really get a lot of it.

You're making an assumption that users are interested in learning things.
Search for posts by mully in the jobs thread. Her coworker is the kind of people we're dealing with here, just 30 years younger.
NEWS FLASH.
The first time I heard about that dude at Microsoft who wanted people to have to have a license to get on the internet, I thought it was the worst idea I had ever heard of.
But now, I don't know.
I have seen the future. Skynet's not taking over by nukes and brute force. It'll all go down through "Would you kindly" friend requests.
