I'd SO much rather hang out with that emu than whatever that thing above it is.

    Assuming it's an emu anyway.

Haven't played DA (own it, but going through Tales of Vesperia first), but just bring up Final Fantasy 13 in any argument about games being too linear.

I think its because the decisions in the game feel like they have no weight. The ending, how you get there, are all predetermined. It's why I dislike GTA's story mode. You get no decision except for some extremely minor ones, the writer wrote a plot and you are just following it out.

On a language note, German grammar is terrifying
German permits lengthy nominal modifiers such as:
"Die noch zu Anfang des Kurses relativ kleinen, aber doch merklichen Verständigungsschwierigkeiten" (literally: The still-at-the-beginning-of-the-course-relatively-small-but-nevertheless-noticeable communication difficulties).

Which is not to say I don't mind a good story, just when you puport to make a game "role playing" not letting me have any kind of decision on the story is like saying "Well except for these roles."

FF games are not rpgs in the traditional sense as they are always linear storytelling.

I can picture Cliff now. Sitting at his computer with complicated hair and a My Chemical Romance poster on the wall behind him. There may also be a lip piercing.

Either that or he's one the retards in the Men's Rights movement.

The mens movement makes me sad, because there are some things seriously wrong with family courts and equal sentencing for crimes. But the people pushing that are god damn horrible.

Meh, favorite story mode so far from those types of games is Saints Row 2. That game had some fucking ice cold moments.

DA did the same thing all western RPGs do these days

Linear -> Linear -> Breakout into "open world" where you really only have 3 or 4 tasks you can do in any order -> Linear finish

The only reason games like that are called RPGs is because of the association with older pen and paper tabletop games. I'd really like a better term for them, but I can't think of one and even if I did, it's not like anyone else would change.

Man Fallout 3 begs to differ.

Unless you use that flowchart but the "Breakout into open world" part contains 99% of the content.

Also it's all about finding a happy medium.

I mean Second Life is technically the least linear game ever.

So you know, you need some form of guidance there.

Also the Linear -> Open world -> Linear ending thing makes sense.

The beginning of a game needs to be somewhat linear. I mean unless you spawn the player at a completely random spot somewhere in a giant world and don't tell them anything about what they're supposed to do, and that would suck.

And I think linear endings are more a matter of limited time and resources. Not many games can have a bunch of different endings based on your decisions, and those that do use a cookie-cutter model anyway that isn't quite there.

Step 1: Go outside and pick a tomato.
    Step 2: Slice tomato.
Step 3: Place slices in fridge to chill.
Step 4: Lightly dress tomato slices with olive oil and herbs.
Step 5: Put your desired fat onto some bread. A thin layer of mayo is fine.
