An invite to Steam group'd be grand. SteamID's also Nathantin.
Man, this seemed to come out of nowhere. Really looking forward to it. Heard good things of the UT2k4 Alien Swarm, but never actually played it.
Is this you? You don't have a profile name thingy setup and also your profile seems to be set to private. I invited you anyway, but those are things to fix.
And if it's not you, I couldn't find you by searching for Nathantin on Steam so please link your profile. :P
So how much hand did Valve really have in this? Did they just put the Alien Swarm team on payroll and let them make it themselves, or did they oversee or help in its development? Also, do we know if this is a real proper sequel or a remake?

It's a proper sequel. All I know about the goings on inside Valve is that several of the key developers of the original Alien Swarm were hired and put to work on the Left 4 Dead series and Portal 2. They continued to develop the new Alien Swarm simultaneously.

In addition to rolling out a free game, this feels like an experiment both with community modding with the SDK, as well as a new tile-based mapping system for Source. Can't say I disapprove.
Yeah tile based mapping sounds real swell. It made the original Neverwinter Night's toolset insanely accessible and I'm hoping it makes the Alien Swarm mapper equally intuitive.

It's really neat. You create 'tiles' in hammer. Something like a room or a corridor. If you've made a corridor, you assign an exit/entry point at each end, or if you've made a room, assign one at each entry way.
You save your room or corridor, or what ever, then run the tile program. You're presented with a grid and you can place the tiles where ever you want, just line up the entry points to the tiles.
OR, you can paint down an approximate path for you level, on the grid, and the program will place tiles down in a random order follow the path as close as it can. It'll line up the entry points for you.
Something like that, anyway.
[...] You can make a tile any size or shape. There probably is a minimum size, but you can make a tiles L and T shapes, or anything really. If you wanted, you could make an entire cavern, or a sandy plain, down to a small cap to cover an exit, or a small cubby hole or something.

It has more buttons than either of those but it should theoretically work on a gamepad if you map the buttons.

Chances are someone's already invited that person to the list.
Why couldnt they release this on a friday? As in last friday?
Damnit Valve. Release a free game and I still hate you.
Also I heard the game was ready for pre-load? Or was that some BS? I can't find a link.
Will edit this post when I'm in.
e: Hot damn that was fast. Can't beat the PA response time. Muchas gracias!
