I'm not particularly a huge fan of the Mushihime series for various reasons, but Cave games in general involve a lot of pre-planning, especially in the later stages. For general assistance and such, the shmups forum is probably the best place to go. There's also the time honored tradition of watching videos of other people playing :V
It's a loving homage to Gradius and other arcade shmups of that era, by a Spanish dude. It has great music, and awesome retro styling. And it's free!!!
The author has a nice philosophy on arcade- style gaming: "I believe in short and intense games, in playing a bit each day enjoying every minute played until the end. I like adventure games that require skills to solve situations, makes my heart beat fast, brings me death or glory back, and lets me spend the rest of the day in another things."
I can't seem to get it to run properly on my netbook yet, as i have to play without sound to make it run normally... Sounds are in a separate folder, though, with cover art if you wanna burn it to CD too! I emailed the creator about my running problems, so hope he'll get back with a fix...
Anyway, hope you guys try it and enjoy as much as i have! ~82MB of shmup arcade bliss.
This game is amazing, and I can't get anyone else I know to fucking play it.
So Raiden 3 actually gets difficult? I know in the first 2 games the best strategy was usually to just kill bosses before they could do anything. Makes me want to try it.
And Hydorah is alright. I was kind of disappointed when it carried a difficulty warning screen. I'm only a dozen levels in, though, so maybe the curve gets steeper.
Hoho. Vanguard Princess is still getting updates? It was pretty good for what it was, even if the characters are bleh. I'd also had the idea of bringing a laptop with a few doujin fighters to one of our regular sf/tekken/soul calibur tourneys just to see how people would warm to them.

Actually it's not difficult, despite my bitchings. Skip to 4. Or better yet, get the Raiden Fighters Aces collection. Take my bitchings with a grain of salt. It's not that Mushihime and Raiden are hard (okay Mushihime is,) they're just hard to me for the wrong reasons. Also, I love Mushihime and am going to give Cave and Aksys all my money* when Deathsmiles comes out.
*No I'm not getting the extremely limited edition that comes with panties. Just...no.
Irisu Syndrome Kai announced somewhat recently. Metsu was released in March. No clue how long it took from IS to ISM. Hopefully ISK will come out and explain some of this shit.
If you enjoy horizontal shooters too then the rest of Platine Dispositif's selection (Gundeadligne, Gundemonium Collection etc) are worth looking at.
Speaking of Platine Dispositif, the shooters from them that made it to psn also got a PC release as well from Rockin' Android (who also brought over the Suguri series). It's cool that some of these doujin games are getting picked up.
Good lord, Seimoe looks incredible. I mean I don't like memorization heavy stuff, but that looks to amazing to ignore. The visuals (bullets) look light years beyond Touhou too.
Diadra Empty is another really excellent horizontal shooter that does some pretty crazy stuff. It's aesthetically also just great to watch and listen to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3L12obnP34
I've always been a fan of Radio Zonde, even if it's on the easy side. Some of the characters are kind of awkward to play as well. But the last level is a lot of fun, and the last form of the last boss was neat.

Radio Zonde is really cool. I wouldn't say it's all that easy. The last boss sequence was : O especially when the screen opens up.
You might want to check out Hellsinker. It's vaguely made by some of the same people as Radio Zonde.

Granted that on my first playthrough I was doing it completely by ear and had no idea how any of the systems worked until I spent time testing them, but last time I replayed it I went straight to the last level and found it to be much easier than even I remembered. Probably took me less than 10 tries to get it down perfect. Then again, I was using the ezmode ship, which I'd already beaten it with and had a general idea of what to do and when. I'm sure it would be much harder with some of the characters.
Recettear's apparently been officially licensed and is getting a commercial release.
'Sup. I'd actually considered making a thread about our little effort, but I'm pretty sure that's against PA policy. :x
Anyway it's been a pretty unreal experience so far and totally rad, and even if it's a hair grindy in parts I love Recettear to bits. Hopefully we can get a retail release up soon here, we've been working on the mother forever now.
I've seen much worse, and the translation, if liberal, is at least interesting without having to resort to constant pop-culture references.
Besides, who can't love a game where the debt collectors are good guys and the main character's catch phrase is "Capitalism ho!" Should have released it last year with themes like that.

What, bunnies not your thing?
Meanie! You'll make Irisu cry!
That would be unfortunate.

Looks like it was made in danmakufu, but it doesn't look half bad, outside of the retarded love of randomly curving lasers and shots.

I know that, it's just SaGa was kind of niche even when they were still making them.

It will make you weep. Although it is a lot more memorization than Touhou.

Rebrank's other games are good too

TWINS/TWAIN/AltSphere are good for easier/less memorization based shmups.

eXceed series is also good.

So awesome.
Also, I wish the forum would let me change the thread title.

All praise Aroduc. Our anime jesus among other things.
I thought you could change thread titles on PA? Or is that ability no longer around?
Maybe the title will be relevant again when there's actually a Touhou game on the DS.
Or you could make a new thread since the OP is hella outdated.
Also ACLLA PV.

Meh. Whatever.
And AQLoop (TWilght RefrAIN, TWilight INSanity, and I forget the third game) is apparently making an RPG based on TWAIN.

That is... so weird.
I should license BMW. :P
Although Recet was kind of tedious and grindy.
