I didn't pay attention to the colors, and thought the knight was staging a coupe.
How does one stage a sporty, two-door vehicle?

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.
It was funnier before Gurewitch Photochopped that beer into it.
Indeed, the pic would make a lot more sense without the beer. It doesn't have anything to do with the joke, and just causes a "why is that there?" moment.
I figured it might also be a race joke with the white pieces being a bunch of hicks.
Uh, yeah, the whole point is that the white pieces are a bunch of hicks shooting black pieces. Perhaps even assassinating their leader.

They shot the black King.
This comic has layers.
And the one doing the shooting is a white knight like the KKK saw themselves.
Has anyone mentioned Married to the Sea yet? I guess its not really a comic, just a guy and his wife putting captions on old timey pictures. It's really hit or miss, but when it's good, I laugh my ass off. Like this one:

I don't really think the social commentary is even necessary for the joke...
edit - I'm not saying it isn't there, just that it's a funny joke without even noticing that. which it what makes it excellent commentary imo.
SMBC can be amusing sometimes, but it has the same basic problem as Garfield: too much text/exposition. Look at the chess one without the caption, and there's a noticeable improvement.
Really, that's a large part of why PBF is good. He doesn't beat you over the head with the punchline. Sometimes it may take a few moments to figure out what's going on, but that usually just makes it even funnier when it finally clicks.

Like the "Hard Read" one?
I had to explain that one to a friend.
Which, amusingly, was the first time anyone ever showed me a PBF.

Yup, sublety is exactly what makes PBF so funny. I hate it when comics feel like they need to add a caption a la The Far Side to explain the strips or make them "funnier". The Far Side was funny, but its best ones were those that didn't need any captions. I love PBF because many times, I can look at a comic and have no idea what's supposed to be funny about it, but then I'll suddenly notice one little thing that makes the whole strip fall into place and suddenly become hilarious. It's much better than being told "this panel is funny, and here's why!"
I love PBF so much, I've been printing out strips daily for the past couple months and posting them in the window of first hour English class. They've been a huge hit not just in our AP Class, but in all the classes that meet in that room. Gotta spread the love.

You guessed correctly.
Is that the Bollywood version?

I want a guntron shirt.
That was one of my original takes on it, I thought the Bishop was bribing the knight with a beer.

I do love this so much.
Poor. Fucking. Stanley.
is there something i'm not seeing in that panel?
also, there's a Wondermark i'm looking for that i'll post up when i find, since people seem to be doing the occasional "look at this one too" thing
edit: yesssss, there we go
This is today's SMBC:
I still laugh hard every time I see that one.

I laughed my ass off when I saw this one a few pages backed. The last panel is the best.
My favorite PBF comics:
White Inmate has Swastika on his forehead too.
I love how there's apple sauce all over the hood. :^:
To be fair, it's a pretty obvious idea. Anyone who's played chess for a length of time wishes they could do it..
