    pretty cool video set up

i dont think i could call any one place my childhood home

i was born in victoria, bc, then moved to duncan, bc, then by the age of 3 i was in courtenay, bc, then comox, cumberland, royston, then courtenay again by the age of 14 - then victoria, burnaby, east vancouver, downtown, downtown, downtown.

thus catches you up with my moving history over 27 years; that's right, 13 moves in 27 years.

recently (last year), bombardier and i went for a drive to see all of my old houses - every single one of them was painted and renovated to all get out. the one in comox (maybe closest to my "childhood home") made my heart sink - the single-floored, small, yellow home i remember had been stretched across the property, painted gray, with various additions -- and the fruit trees were all replaced with small trailers.

I lived in a town with a population of about 25-30, I was so not expecting this to have anything on street view. Way to be wrong. Awesomely wrong.

The same Saturn is still in the driveway. I don't know how often they get the images for the maps and what-not but my dad got that car when I was in fifth grade (about 14 to 15 years ago). Get a new car, dad.

More like 17 or 18 years ago. Man, math is hard.

Oh hey look, it's pictures before my grandpa redid his roof.

I used my earliest remembered address but it was an apartment complex so the dude basically ran around an industrial part of the city.

    hella depressing.

had to go to street view and shit to even figure out what the address to one of the houses I grew up in was, there were at least 4 between the ages of 5 and 10

probably would have had more impact if it were just one and I hadn't seen what the place was like on street view a minute before watching it, I guess

My old house looks the same. But I was a 10 year old boy. I didn't care about the house. All the grand old trees are gone.

The maple tree out front, the gum tree and the giant sycamore tree that we hung our swings from. The evergreen tree with dense underbrush that we used to hollow out and make forts in.

    All gone.

    I was another:
Your address doesn't contain enough Street-View and/or Google Maps data to 100% enjoy this experience.

The shots they had were all from above so all you saw were trees and a lake. Oh well, I drove Tank by my old house a month ago and the place looks like shit and I barely recognize the neighborhood even.

This was cool and all, but I viewed it on a netbook and I wonder if that diminished anything

Also, I grew up in a house in the woods with no distinctive landmarks where my dad still lives today

So it wasn't like, powerful or anything, it was just lookin' at my house, which I do pretty often anyways

How exactly does streetview work anyway

I mean I am assuming that they did not actually drive down each and every street with a camera pointed in every direction

but that's the only way I can imagine to get those pictures
