Yes, the Silmirillion is a very bland read and can't be translated directly into a film. But damnit, there is some fucking amazing stuff set in there that you just have to fill in the blanks.

I'm also disappointed about del Toro. Dude's Smaug would have been incredible looking.
I remember reading that they're going to try to keep the designs Del Toro came up with while he was still attached
Can't confirm that though
I read the same thing. Dude had already done a lot of design and prep work for the movie in the time that the actual production was stalled.
ALso, I'm trying to figure out where exactly they are going to end the first movie. I can't figure out what would make a good climax for the first movie, while still leaving enough material for an entire second film...
still don't understand how tolkein was able to create something so readable and also make the main trilogy.
It's not amazingly dense, but boy does it get boring

You mean the trilogy gets boring, right?
To this day I have never been able to finish reading Return of the King.
The Hobbit, starring Haley Joel Osment as Biblo, directed by Steven Speilberg

This won't come as any surprise, but I read all of [what was available at the time, Simiril-to-RTK] and also the entire Dune saga in one big rush during the 6th grade back in 87 or 88.
edit: I've read them since, but yeah, early influence.
I read the hobbit and lord of the rings books when i was in grade 2/3
they turned me into the biggest nerd ever and it was so worth it
fuck i cannot wait to see me some 3d Beorn kickin' ass

yes
But since the book is so good they might destroy it.

The Hobbit is awesome.
Fuck the trilogy, I'll just watch the movies
takes up 9 hours instead of the 40 it'd take me to read the books.
This is now how I will always picture him.
I'd never seen this before but this is a still of Stuart Townsend in character before they recast the role
This, ladies and gentlemen, was almost our Aragorn
He should have been a hobbit.
Also He managed to be Uglier than Viggo.
So maybe a Dwarf.
Are you saying that Viggo Mortensen is ugly
What the fuck is wrong with you
I uhhh don't think so personally.
I always thought, besides Ian Mckellen he was the best looker in the movie.
All the women swoon over Bloom though.
Most of my friends hate me now!
I am super excited about this movie.
Martin Freeman has been delightful in pretty much everything I've seen him in
I... I don't understand
the most badass dwarf in fantasy literature
besides tyrion lannister obv

I was BORN in 87 though.
The first movie I was taken to as a newborn
Alien.
Good movie though.
One of my favorites.
Shit man Ghostbusters and Back to the Future two of my favorite movies came out like 3 years before I was born.
Shit the NES was out tow years to the day before I was born.
I didn't get one untill like 1993 though.
We had an atari for a bit but I dropped an orange popsicle in it.
Sorry about the nostalgia but I found some old Weird Al discs.
Ghostbusters 1/2
Blues Brothers
Rad
Gleaming the Cube
Back to the Future
Highlander
Flashdance
Gremlins
Lethal Weapon
etc.
Despite Mel Gibson?
I may have been living abroad.

I read the hobbit afterward and by seventh grade I was reading Silmarillion.
Today I'm lucky to be able to read trash like Jim Butcher.
