By the way, Snuggles, the weirdness you're having with GAF is primarily that you're trying to see it as a collective entity. It's not; it's just another internet hivemind, albeit an exclusive and well-informed one (most of the time). Also their moderators are considerably... well... more hivemindy than ours.
See, that's what makes it more frightening. There's almost no disagreeing or debating in that forum. Unless it's something completely nonfactual (like Capcom being responsible for Castlevania, which they then turned into a meme and dragged it out because HA HA HA THAT IS SO FUNNY), someone will post an opinion and pretty much everyone else will treat it like some sort of bandwagon to get on.
The best thing about a forum like this is that people have their own opinions but also open to other interpretations. Back and forth dialog over there consists of avatar quoting and emoticons.
You obviously haven't been in many of their threads where PC and Consoles are both brought up. There are some downright vicious and strong opinions on both sides of that argument, though I think the PC side tends to come out stronger (though that may be my bias seeing as how I'm a proponent of PC gaming myself)
Both forums have their benefits, PA's biggest being its sense of community imo.
Back to talking about the 3DS though.
Apparently if you already have it preordered at gamestop, it defaults over to the cosmo black. Didn't need to switch anything over myself when I went in to work this morning.
You can buy an iPhone for $200 and it has practical purposes in addition to letting you play games.
You can buy a 3DS for $250 and it's just for games.
Which would you choose? On these forums, probably the 3DS. Your average parent? I think they'll lean towards the iPhone.
Oh what is the 3DS's monthly fee?
I would never, ever buy my kid a phone with a data plan. Too big of a distraction.
True story - today at school a kid was talking about the 3DS, very excited - said he was going to save up for one.
I was surprised (he's only 8) and asked him if he knew how much it was going to cost. He didn't.
When I said £230 you should have seen his face.
Would you call that his.. *puts on sunglasses* no face?
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
I... have no idea what that means! :?
In other news I just spent the cost of a 3DS on a fancy pants Rock Band 3 guitar and midi adapter!
So yeah, no way I'm buying one of these now.

Well, console discussions are serious business no matter what forum you're on.
I think the PSP2 is going to take away half of the 3DS' yearly sales. Suck on that.
no, not really
Half of last years.
Oh snap.
Also I'm very glad the default pre order color is black.
Not me. I've pretty much had it with black on handhelds. They smudge up like nobody's business. Had a black DSi, couldn't wait to sell it for a burgundy DSi XL.
Pre-ordered Aqua Blue on Day 1. Never had a blue anything, but it fits for Nintendo.
Jeez the Internet just doesn't stop. Not everyone buys an iPhone for gaming. The DS has continued to kick ass despite the existence of iDevices. It seems like everyone who says the 3DS will do fine is also conceding that it will not outsell the iPhone. Why does the conversation have to progress any further than that? People buy different things for different reasons. This reminds me of the hardcore digital distribution people saying physical media is totally disappearing tomorrow.

I wish I had the freedom to pre-order right now, but fuck, two media conferences and it feels like I still don't anything concrete about the 3DS release in my region.

I never said the iPhone will keep the 3DS from kicking ass. I just said it's becoming stronger competition. It's interesting things to think about. Then again I'm one of the resident business wonks.

I don't think anyone said that. Mostly we've been saying 'LOOK! COMPETITION! OVER THATAWAY!'
At worst, smartphones and the like will just draw a certain consumer segment away from Nintendo. But it's Nintendo. They'll sell every console at a profit and be just fine.
I call it Face Rapers and I cannot unhear now. There's a story behind this (it doesn't actually involve rape).
I kinda wanted to finally get a console that's not black or white (well the first DS wasn't, but whatever), but blue doesn't completely do it for me, so I'll probably go with black. Oh well. It looks pretty good anyway, much better live than in pics.

I respect the theory behind this..but there is nothing to back this up because your average parent doesn't see the iPhone as a "gaming console."
They know a few things. iPhone = Internet = Porn, etc.
Nintendo = Family friendly gaming.
This is generalizing the "average" parent. I don't think they are going to buy their kids an iPhone over a Nintendo product when they are lookin at games as the reason.

So, since the games will be region locked, will the StreetLink stuff also not work between different region systems? Nor will multiplayer? Or is there just not enough information as of yet?
Still curious about exactly which games will be available on launch, and obviously the 3DS is a bad choice for a plane ride, but otherwise I find myself more excited for it as I have for any console in a while.

Super Street Fighter IV's trailer explicitly shows a multiplayer battle between someone in Japan and in France, so I guess cross-region multiplayer can work.

I think black is best in this case. Apparently all 3DSs will have black around the top screen to minimize interference with the 3D effect, so only a black system will avoid being two tone.

I was wondering why the blue system had so much black on it.
Kotaku had some info that I hadn't seen yet, at least:
We know the Friend Code system is better this time around. Can you even send messages to people while you're playing, maybe while the game is suspended?
Trinen says "the goal is there will be some messaging functions" but couldn't lock in details for us.
How many friends can we have registered in the system?

You can get a DS charger that charges over USB, which most planes have now on every seat. That's what I use whenever I have to cross the Atlantic.

Speaking of which, do they have USB to wall outlet adapters? You know you know a male end USB on one side that you plug a regular chord into the other side? I have like 3 or 4 of the opposite, but if I'm ever at a place with no or full wall outlets, but a USB slot or two available, that would be a good thing to have on hand.
Awesome. I'm not sure if there are a whole lot of GB/GBC games I'd buy at this point, but the GBC Zeldas are definitely on my to get list. Even though I'm overly interested in any of the launch games, I went ahead and pre-ordered a 3DS. There are plenty of DS games I need to catch up on since my lite got stolen 2 years ago, and I doubt it'll be easy to find one without showing up to the midnight launch.
I'm just glad they're going for the DX version of Link's Awakening. Wouldn't put it past them to release the original GB one, then the GBC version afterward.

God those early GB games were shit hard. Super Mario Land, Castlevania, and Operation (Nut-Crushing) C. Such torture inflicted upon children.

As soon as some kid brings a gun to school and they find a 3DS in his backpack...
"Nintendo 3DS teaches our children to shoot their friends in the face"
I remember seeing a porn by that name.
You start to say something clever, you put on your sunglasses, you say it, usually a pun of some sort, then YEAAAAAAAAH!
And the joke, you described a kid's look of horror when you told him the price, instead of an O face it was a No face.

Blue 3DS is #2.
Or that it would be something like Call of Duty continuing with its recording breaking sales momentum.

After playing games on the XL its a quality you really come to appreciate, even if this is slightly smaller.
