Yeah, they're moving to actual dollar amount gift cards. I'm not really sure I like that, means we'll basically never get discounts on them as they'll fall under gift card laws.
On the other hand, this means it's impossible for them to expire in Nebraska.

I didn't mention the Augmented Reality stuff, did I?
Because that was really cool, although they only had the archery one with the dragon and what have you. If it's used in other interesting ways then I can really see it catching on.
I wonder what Nintendo plans on doing for the future of handheld Zelda games. By the sounds of most impressions, a 3D-style Zelda works well on the 3DS, but will they still keep future Zelda games in the classic 2D style like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks? I don't really know what I want.
I would prefer 3D handheld Zelda instead of top down, just so they can't implement god awful touch screen controls ever again.
I really wanted to enjoy the DS Zeldas but the controls were just so bad
Where are those pictures from and why does he have a 3DS more than a month early?
It's probably just because I'm more used to his look in more recent games, but something about the Mario card seems odd. I also think there could have been better pictures to put on the Link card.
So am I to believe that the other 5 AR games are Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid and Kirby?
A Pikmin game that takes place on my table sounds like the raddest thing
I would not assume so. In fact I was really surprised to see characters on the cards, because most AR uses very broad, simple shapes to make detection easier. I'm not sure it will work well with the character cards.
Notice on the shot with the red manual in packaging that it lists the character cards separate from the question block card. (In higher res all it says is "? card - 1" and "character card - 5" in different languages.) Makes me think you'll still need that ? card for most AR stuff.
I can also make out "You need these cards to play AR ~~~~~~ Augmented Reality, a software title pre-installed on this system. Read the Operations Manual carefully before ~~~~~ these cards."

Whatever the character cards are used for, I imagine that they will be used for things involving those characters. It doesn't make sense otherwise.
Edit: As far as tracking goes, I was always under the impression that the shape itself didn't matter. Once the system recognizes the card, the tracking is done using the black outline rectangle, isn't it?

Most AR patterns look like these:
You can't rely on a simple rectangular outline because you can't be sure whether the user has rotated the card or not, and also because a lot of things have a simple rectangular shape that could confuse the software. I bet the yellow shape as well as the question mark are critical to AR operations.

Yeah, I know. It just seems to me like actually doing any tracking based on the pattern itself would be a lot more complicated than finding the outline.
My assumption was that the "Nintendo" logo is used to determine the orientation.
Edit: I guess without any good games right off the bat, the first thing I'll do with my 3DS is attempt to fool the AR games based on my assumptions of how they work. Fun!
Anybody know if we can expect a floor model of these things before launch? If it's going to give me headaches, I'd like to know that before I drop $400+ on it.

You mean a week early: it's out in Japan next Saturday.
The box has a PEGI age rating on it (and also a German one whose name escapes me at the moment). PEGI is a European thing and there's more than a month until European launch.
Have a PAL 3DS now, and can say, for those confused:
The ? card launches the program in AR games. You're then given six options for six games. One of thsoe games places Miis into the real world. You can move them around with the stick and change their pose with face buttons. Sadly there's no animation - it's like static statues. You can also move around in real space to change the angle of the look you have on them, and then take photos of the Miis.
There's also a program which lets you do the same. All those cards do is bring Samus, Kirby, Mario etc out into the world. Again - static statues, and you can change their pose with the fact buttons. You can also take pictures. I managed to get all the cards/characters to appear at once, which I thought was quite cool. There's some cool sound effects from their games when the characters appear, too.
So, that's what they do. The character cards aren't games, but the character card bit - I think it's called "Star Viewer" - is one of the 'six' AR games.
Just preordered that sexy aqua 3DS. Haven't decided what games I'll get yet, still waiting to see a definitive launch list and maybe some reviews, but that Ghost Recon strategy game, Steel Diver, and Dead or Alive are looking sweet to me.

Changed my pre-order from black to blue and the GameStop employee told me that the blue one looked too girly.

Of all the colors to call girly... BLUE is girly?
Maybe the employee was born in the good old days when pink was the manly man color, blue was the color of the Virgin Mary and all children were called girls.

My main problem with the blue is that the top screen border is black. I think that would bug me in the long run.
I'll probably have a decal on the outside before long, anyway.
If multi-tone design bothers you, then don't look at the game slot. On both the Black and Blue models that spot is inexplicably silver. At least that part will not be staring at you all the time though. Speaking of decal's, anyone have any recommendations for skinning or other customization for handhelds? My current DS Lite has the Red Tanqueray seal on it, but that's as far as I've gotten.

By border, do you mean the thin line around the screen, or the entire inside of the top half of the case? The former makes sense because otherwise it would clash horribly with the upp case interior. The latter is apparently because non-black colours diminish the 3D effect somehow - presumably because they contrast less with the image on display.
I'm actually quite torn on this one - if this is a device that's being used on public transport, you really don't want it to stand out too much. And whilst aquamarine is a really refreshing change from the "Shiny Black/White" of most modern personal electronics, I wonder if it'll retain its appeal 4 or 5 years down the line. Why do they insist on giving us all of these choices?
They can have any colour they want, so long as it is black. Or aquamarine. And black.
I mean the entire top half. I understand why they do it, which is another reason for me not to hold out for a colour I'd prefer, like red or tortoiseshell.

I have to admit, seeing that kitty up on the screen warmed even my bitter old heart.
However I don't like the contrast of the realistic animals and minimalistic Miis.

It was a clever story moment, and you could argue a good dual screen use moment, but it didn't really do much amazingly impressive touch screen wise.

Lodsiek, yes, but atm only at specialised Nintendo events. Though presumably they'll start getting floor models out to EBs and stuff once launch hits.

They say you will be able to try it out before launch, and that you can stay tuned to that page for the gory details.
