but now...well...I think i've fallen in love with the teen titans show. so, my question is, how different is the main titans series from the show and is it as good as I hope? I know there's an offshoot comic continuing the tv show but I'm more interested in titans canon. where should I start? and do I need to have an intimate knowledge of the DC universe apart from the mythos of batman, superman, and green lantern?

Geoff John's Teen Titans came out when the cartoon did. A lot of the characters were the same (Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy), but it also had Superboy, Wonder Girl, and Match (plus some others every now and then).

It's good stuff, although you'll definitely want to find out more about some of the characters (since they've all been around for a while in the DCU). It's serious business.

Of course, I have to mention Young Justice. It's the "new" Teen Titans before the reboot in 2003. Robin (Tim Drake), Superboy, Impulse, Wonder Girl, Arrowette, Empress, and Secret. It's fantastic and more light-hearted (although it does have serious moments). It's not necessary to read before Teen Titans because TT pretty much ignores the series (both its events and the characters' personalities).

That's why I support gun control, Cassie. I can only hope it doesn't take my death and your subsequent emotional breakdown to convince our readers to do the same.

    Yes

but when you read Young Justice and then Teen Titans

right away it's "these are barely even the same characters"

Incidentally, I'm very excited to read Ennis' upcoming, in-continuity arc in Superman, wherein Clark rapes his way across seven states using superspeed. Truly a bold new direction for an established character.

I was making a point in a roundabout way. Having a character suddenly shift personalities and just throwing up your hands saying, "Oh well, it's a new writer!" is silly and leads to a pretty slippery slope. Naturally all writers will have different takes on a character, but the character should still fundamentally remain the same, otherwise, what's the point of using said character? This is why people cried foul when Chuck Austen had Superman blowing out people's kneecaps with heat vision, and why people wondered what the fuck was up with Booster in 52, at least before his actions were explained.

It's very similar to Bruce Jones sudden rise and fall. He got on a relatively important book (Hulk) and did some pretty inoffensive stories, and before you know it he's writing Nightwing, Vigilante, Man-Bat, OMAC, and Deadman. Now he's just writing Deadman, and really, who the fuck cares about a Deadman that isn't Boston Brand?

    Well

Cassie used to be the strong leader type that could take on Superboy

and now she can barely last a panel without crying and hating everyone

Robin used to be the smart one that didn't want to turn into Batman but could think like him

and now can barely go a panel without saying "batman would do this"

Bart went from being the clown to "i know everything gosh why won't wally like me"

and Superboy went from being a lovable jerk to whiny/worrisome/dead

and Secret, Arrowette, and Empress went from being awesome to nonexistent

See, I think Kon and Bart got the worst of it. Both went from fairly fun characters that were similar to, but very different from, their adult counterparts. Neither one was Superman Jr. or Young Flash. Kon had a personality completely opposite that of Supes, a unique powerset, and an interesting look. With Teen Titans he became a moody, sullen character that got Superman's broad shoulders and powers, and a sudden complex about being a clone. Bart was carefree goof off who saw life as a giant videogame, and was capable of using his speed powers in comedic, interesting ways. With Teen Titans he literally became Flash Jr., lost his sense of humor completely, and became a sad shell of the interesting character he once was.

Honestly, I have to imagine this is how Geoff Johns' Teen Titans pitch went.

    "Alright Geoff, what've you got?"

"Well check this out. You know all the characters in Young Justice? What if I make them really, really depressed?"

    "...."

"And uhh.. a bunch of them will forget that they ever associated with the old Young Justice characters."

    "...."

"And umm.. I'll bring back all of Wolfman's Titans. Like, all of them. Right away."

    "...."

    "...."

    *slow clap*
