haha ege, you're one of those people who stops to take pictures of the near domesticated deer along the parkway
people will stop in the middle of a 45 zone to take pictures, creating traffic jams
I'm one of the locals so it's frustrating to no end
it's a fucking deer people move along!
I see snakes daily where I work, they live in the pine straw bales and like to abandon ship as we load them onto our golf carts. Nothing big but they're really common.

Fuck tripods! (Though craning one's neck does hurt after awhile so they probably would be useful) I got some nice shots this Fourth without one (One before was a year ago with a point and click, nice camera actually)[/img]

Look man, we're just gonna burn alot of time talking about alot of shit.
Thanks, it makes a good wallpaper if your icons are few. I like the first only because it looks like a butterfly, my friend thinks it make a good shirt.

Um. That's one more reason you might want a tripod. All of those "fireworks" look like gold trees. Composition is w/e since all the individual shots are cut off.
I actually like the fact that the fireworks have a shakiness to them. We've all seen the generic long exposure fireworks shots from a tripod a thousand times. These ones are a refreshing change.

What matters is whether those shots were made that way intentionally. Unintentional "special effects" aren't very flattering.
Actually, some of the best shots I've seen have been accidents. That isn't to say that you shouldn't know what you're doing though. And that said, I am not a fan of the shakiness.

Long distance runner, what you standin' there for?

this is one of the most appealing aspects of photography.
the fact that if all of the elements in a photograph and the shutter release sync up just right, anyone can capture an amazing shot.
photographic seeing and scooling/discipline goes a long way, but the average joe can still always luck out and capture a fantastic image.

And similarly, the not-so-average-Joe who is used to taking 'perfect' shots might also luck out and accidentally shoot something different and interesting. In my various books on photography as well as in articles in Outdoor Photographer I regularly read anecdotes by career photoghraphers who take a certain amount of pride in a particular shot that happened when they made the best of a bad situation (the light wasn't right, etc) and the accidental, throw-away shot ended up being spectacular.
That said, I suspect this happens more for someone who has built up a lot of basic skill; they would be better poised to take advantage of cinrcumstances and salvage a crappy shot into something interesting. A real novice might get lucky and shoot something new, different, and cool, but they probably successfully do that less often.
(Lest I seem too pretentious in this post, I rank myself sqarely in the second category).
I picked up a Nikon D40 yesterday and hopped out with my girlfriend to take some pictures. I LOVE the camera, i'm not entirely happy with my shots though. I think I was a little caught up in trying the technicals of the camera more so than anything, I definatly have room to improve.
The first is my favourite of the day. There's a few things about it that i'm not happy with. It was my first b/w conversion with the new camera
I also like this one, though I wish I would have remembered my tripod as I would have liked to used a longer exposure with a smaller aperture. I need to learn how to edit in photoshop better but I'm trying to keep it as a second thought.
Curiosity didn't kill the cat, it just got him blinded by a camera flash when he came to inspect what I was playing with :P
Some random thing I saw... Doesn't look as good as I hoped

If the property wasn't a conservation area I'd totally buy it.
takes away from the photo a little to see him reacting to the cameraman

Hi, central composition.

Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
They are certainly different, if not all that great photographs.
I suppose thats why they have them

I took a few more pictures of the fire that night, but none really looked that great.
What are some interesting ways of shooting campfires? I'm fresh out.
