Bonuses are ok when they're paid as, you know, bonuses for good work. It just seems bonuses (boni?) are always payed; whether the work was good or poor doesn't really matter.
Very large wealth inequality is generally seen as a bad thing. There have been studies on the effects of wealth inequality and there are several negative effects I always forget about.
Well, if the shareholders think the bankers deserve it, they can get double a years salary as bonus.
Without checking this up at all whatsoever, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this probably encompasses most if not all existing bonus schemes, so it wouldn't end up being much of a cap for anybody.
But hey. Maybe we can lower the allowed bonuses the next time the economy hits the shitter.
Shouldn't it be something like- There must be at least a majority shareholder vote to confirm board members salaries/bonuses. IIRC at the moment the board can set their own salary and unless the majority of shareholders vote against it it goes through. Since the majority of shareholders don't know/ don't vote it never gets stopped.
In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.
somebody remind me why the hell the bonuses matter.
Because the bonuses make up the majority of absurdly inflated executive pay.
and we care why
Because executive pay has exploded out of all proportion to the value they bring to the company. Instead of receiving a bonus for improving the performance of the company a guaranteed massive, yearly increasing bonus has become part of executive corporate culture because it allows them to fiddle their tax bills and siphon off huge amounts of cash for themselves.
Executive pay has risen relatively by hundreds of percent since the 80's while everyone else's has stagnated or gone down relative to the cost of living. It's even at the point now where these thieving cunts pay themselves so much it effects the bottom line of the company, this is why even shareholders are starting to get pissed off with it.
so yeah we care. It's corruption pure and simple and its harming everyone except the privileged few in on the scam

The thieving counts are unduly extracting wealth that belongs to the shareholders it seems. Running the business for their benefit and all that

Giving people bonuses when they've done fucked up is silly. It's sad that these needs legislating against, but apparently it does.
I'm not sure it does need legislating against just because it seems silly.
It's a bit like how you should not need laws to tell people to wear their seat belt in a car. It's silly not to and yet if you don't people get other people killed.
Except here it's "just" corruption.

well, it isn't corruption. But yeah.
If giving yourself massive bonuses while cutting profits, employee wages and shareholder dividends isn't corruption than I don't know what is.
They are the people placed in charge of dividing up the pie for everyone and they're giving themselves a larger slice by stealing from everyone else.
i want to be a regular ol developer/engineer, just doing challenging, interesting work with a fun team on software projects, maybe getting to do a little bit of traveling once or twice a year for my company... retire as a senior engineer

urgh, man the hyperbole ain't helping your arguments any, so quit it.
okay, for one, the board of directors represent the shareholders, and they decide the wages of the executives (or, the supervisory board and the executive board, in some places)
they're not just taking money for themselves. The stockholders are the ones who in the end okay this.
At no point is there corruption. Use another word with bad connotations, because that one doesn't fit.

I am concerned that is heading towards a silly "If it's not illegal then it's moral" place. Instead of that, let us discuss the relative merits of frozen desserts.

if shareholders want executive pay to be less but can't make it so, then there's a bigger problem here. That shareholders can't get their will through. Unless the majority don't want it.

yeah but just capping bonuses is starting at the wrong end
redistribute the wealth instead.
Sadly, one is more feasible in the USA than the other.
except that doing that when the economy is in the shitter just feels like a symbolic band-aid
it's not gonna fix shit
yeah well it doesn't help
if you make rich people less rich, and the poor just as poor, then you haven't fixed jack shit.

It just feels that way which is why this bugs me a little.

Read Casual's post.
I did. It came after.
Of course it needs legislating against. People cannot be trusted to be fair and objective when it comes to setting their own salaries.

This seems even more foolhardy than attempting to run between my legs while rapidly descending stairs
I have no idea what I want to be yet. Feels like I'm running out of time to decide if I want to get their in a reasonable time.
Maybe I'll just kind of stumble along and see what happens. You can totally get rich and successfull doing that right?
Right?
but anyway, rich people can be rich and make loads of money. I am perfectly fine with that as a socialist.
We're just going to take a lot of their money and use it for other stuff. Like welfare queens.

Don't think you're better than me.
I got a little excited when I saw your ship.
Because that works so well right?
It isn't hyperbole at all. Shareholders are the ones leading the charge for legeslation. So obviously they aren't happy with executive pay.
well it is because if it was corruption you could have thrown them in jail already.
it's p cool
