An elephant in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus was injured in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, and the police were searching for suspects, law enforcement and circus officials said. The 39-year-old Asian elephant, named Carol, was resting in an enclosure outside the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo when a shot fired from a passing vehicle hit her shoulder, an arena spokesman said. The elephant is expected to fully recover, the circus said.
That 3-2-1 Contact show reminds me of the Discover Magazine TV show. I fucking loved that show.
I was also a big fan of the Wishbone + Bill Nye 1-2 punch that aired at like 6pm on PBS back in the day. There was some show that followed those, heavily sponsored by 3M, but I think I didn't usually bother to watch that because it was slightly more boring.

Wishbone was pretty awesome! Although when you consider that it was the "we should read stories!" show that replaced Reading Rainbow, it's hard not to put an asterix by its awesomeness.

I think Reading Rainbow was on during the daytime on my local PBS affiliate, so I'd always be at school when it was on. Wishbone + Bill Nye caught me at just the right time in the evenings.
Y'know, I wonder about children's programming sometimes. It's easy for me to criticize the obviously bad stuff, but I honestly can't think of how to make good edutainment television. I suspect that the kinds of shows I loved to watch as a kid weren't really very popular. I don't know how you grab kids with educational TV that wouldn't be watching it anyway.

See: my post about ronya being bourgie.
this 'bourgie' thing annoys me a little because I'm pretty sure I've come across another more distinctively south asian term somewhere in my english literature classes of postwar authors
but I can't remember what that term is
english-speaking white-collar types whose family tree has a bunch of colonial-era civil servants, lawyers/doctors/etc., or british army officers. a certain aspirational outlook on life, a little too educated for their socioeconomic status, etc.

I can't think of a specific term I've come across for them; I've always just seen them as "local elites," either extant or handpicked and created by the imperial powers. Didn't go over too well in the Middle East, and was probably actually a major reason for why opposition and anti-colonial fervor took the specifically reactionary, Islamic overtones that it did in the region.

Of course, the elephant won't cooperate to help the investigation.
The funniest thing about Margaret Tatcher's death is watching the Fox News people try to fall over themselves worshipping her as a right-wing icon while dancing around the fact she told their other right-wing icon and co-host Sarah Palin to go fuck herself.

Part of what made PBS work when I was that age was the fact that there were only a relative handful of channels. So other than Saturday morning cartoons it was not like there was a lot going on.
