One of the arguments put forth as to why digital downloads are so expensive is supposedly because of those very retailers so I can't see them bending over backwards to sell such a console. it seems like a catch 22 situation until MS and Sony just tell the likes of Gamestop to go fuck themselves.

Doesn't cutting the disc drive instead of the useless Kinect fly directly in the face of their whole ONE media device to rule them all design for the system itself?

    Yes.

Only if you think playing DVDs/Blurays is a major component of being a media altar. Which is not necessarily true.

Okay this is a problem people in this thread typically have.

and eventually we'll get to the point where MS and Sony will tell the likes of Gamestop to go fuck themselves. in the meantime, do you really think Best Buy or WalMart really care about this? do think they only sell the consoles because they can sell game or do you think they'd just see it as another item on their shelves? he'll, i'm sure they could find something to fill the shelf space left when/if physical games go away.

to be honest, i see it more working the other way. Gamestop and the other specialist retailers will agree to sell the digital only unit, but they'll want digital game prices to remain above retail prices. and MS will agree because of course they will. Sony are at least making positive steps, like allowing Amazon to run their own PSN store front. MS can catch up to Sony on that front*, i'm not so sure that Gamestop will be able to catch up to Amazon though.

*though i'm not confident that they'll do so any time soon.

Here's the metric for when Blu-Ray drives aren't required for media / media centers you guys.

    When they're no longer manufactured.

I'd buy a Kinectless and BRless Xbox if the price were right. I have a separate BR player that I rarely use. If my internet were better (alleged 15mbs but frequently much less) I'd never use physical media. Still, if the PC has decent controller options and easy big screen connections, that's probably going to be the best choice. Being locked into an ecosystem with a significant barrier to entry tends to expose one to anticonsumer practices. With Steam, there is some competition and if they start to abuse their customers the potential of more competition at the cost of a free client.

Until the majority of people have access to internet speeds that allow them to stream HD anytime they like, as opposed to netflix and amazon instant being fairly unusable between the hours of 6-10pm, it kind of is.

Meaning you want someone else to make the industry thread? or just come up with titles? lol

I couldn't find the exact interview where they discuss it but it's mentioned in this entertainment weekly interview.

Microsoft thought it was important enough to name their box after it.
