300 is the minimum run for PA internally. That is likely their break-even or minimal loss point on a print run, so if they wanted to "do a Bat Milk" as it were, they could. Example, if there is a design that they love, but think few people outside of PA would want (obscure reference, deliberately ugly design or minimal design) then we might see a 300 run.
It's funny you mentioned Bat Milk (I totally bought one of those shirts), because when Pinny Arcade was just starting to get off the ground this was in the Penny Arcade Gazelle (#33):
Pinny Arcade: What Now?
We essentially launched Pinny Arcade, our tradable pin program, at PAX East and promptly sold out of every pin that we brought to the show. While it is possible that we will reprint portions of the PAX East pin set in the future, the PAX East 2013 pin will be limited to the pins that were distributed at the show. That makes it, along with Wizards of the Coast's Chandra pin, our first truly limited edition pins in the program. That’s pretty exciting.
It seemed like everyone involved had a good time with our pins at PAX East, so we’re taking steps to grow the activity. On the purchasable pin side, we’ve got 2 new sets that we’re trying to get completed for PAX Australia, one of which will also be available online. We’ll then get working on another 2 new sets for PAX Prime. On the trading side, we’re working on getting each Penny Arcade staff member their own, unique pin to trade with you. Plus, we’ll likely have a few more industry IP pins like the Chandra pin from PAX East.
In short, PAX East was fun, but PAX Aus and PAX Prime are going to be even better, with more pins to hunt and buy and trade. And we’ve got a long list of pins to come after those. Seasonal pins. Character pins. Event-based pins. You name it.
But heck, if there’s one pin that YOU would love to see, why not tell me on Twitter (@retnus) or something? That Bat Milk pin won’t get made if I’m the only one asking for it. Right?
Well in gonna wait till closer to the end before upgrading my pledge. Its gone up 3k in about a day. At this rate it should easily make it to 75k by the end
Just upped my bid for the statue as well. Really hope they make it to 75k for the DM board.
There is a good chance we will make it to $75k and get the DM board. KickTraq is showing a trend of $80k, and there is often a spike during the last 2 or 3 days.
I did increase my pledge once I saw the beholder dice bag last weekend at ECCC.
Was there a bigger picture released of what the Val figure looks like? Looks pretty cool in the rewards image but I'd really need to see something like that with more detail.
So i guess 1000 minus the final number is how many will be at East
Yep, and from what I understand there will be no more, ever. So, that is technically a Limited Edition Pin, even if it doesn't have the back on it. Maybe Scott will change his mind in the future, but probably not.
I guess the latest news post pushed it well over 75k. We are definitely getting a DM screen! So excited! To be honest, im actually about to start playing DnD for the first time with my friends, though ive always been fascinated by the game, just have never gotten around to forming a group with equally interested people. The buzz around the kickstarter, and us all reading the comics together have gotten us all extra excited to play. Cant wait to have this DM screen which will surely have some fantastic art!
I was starting to feel a bit bummed about all the extra pins he will have in stock and backing him for $100, but with all the extras he is adding on... can't feel bad about that!
I have to say, the merch this KS is producing really is looking top notch. I really hope they can get a preview of the vinyl before the KS finishes, by all accounts it should be great but $200 (aus) is still a lot to drop down.
I'm interested to see the market for this pin come October (or roughly around then).
I think it is safe to say that some of the $100-and-above backer crowd has not been corrupted by squirrels (the bag and vinyl tier numbers are seeing a lot of success, and that's not 100% Pinthusiasts). While some may succumb to the influences of pin obsession, I imagine there will be folks looking to move the pin via auction.
Now, normally I would say this brings in the concern brought up in the most recent podcast: What happens when someone gets something of extreme value (say, a DLC in a blind box) but has no clue about what they are holding? But in this case, that won't necessarily be the case. Since the remaining supply of the pin will almost certainly be distributed by the time backers get their pin (if he doesn't bring them all to East, he'll certainly sell out at Prime), there should be at least some existing established market value at that time.
For those unable to punt the $100 for this kickstarter that are also unable to obtain one via PAX, there could be a great opportunity later this year to nab one from a backer.
Same, i did end up upping my bid to $200AU for the Val statue, dice bag and pin tier. So happy that we reached the DM Board reward. Congrats to Scott and everyone involved! You deserve every cent!

Can't believe people went just for the pin, when I heard Acq Inc was going to be at East it was instantly my most anticipated part of the weekend. The pin was icing.
For those who just went for the pin, I definitely recommend going back and listening to the podcasts / Prime live games.

At this point I suspect Scott will only have about 600 Pins with him, to allow for losses in shipping and suchlike.

Always looking to trade.
It was funny, during the AI panel people were randomly getting up and leaving. Scott was like "It's those damn pins."
Knowing that many attendees (myself included) were mostly there for the D&D pin.
I went for the D&D pin, but stayed for the whole thing. One of my favorite PAX experiences was that panel.
Actually those leaving were likely Exhibitors needing to get back to their booths, or people who wanted to attend other panels as well.

Or since they ran over time and Leeroy was about to escape people who were about to chase him down.
Hope they do one in AUS this year.
