The downside is that I was expected to provide free babysitting services whenever. Something my younger siblings didn't have to do till I moved out. I also was expected to have dinner prepared and ready. I did end up with stricter rules but I got way better at not getting caught then my siblings did.

one of my wife's friends was having a birthday party for their (at the time) 2 year old. he's an only child largely because they are a bit older and even getting pregnant with the one was a huge struggle.
an elderly lady there who i assume was one of the grandmothers was chatting the birthday boy up with super terrible questions, like, "wouldn't you like a baby sister?" "don't you get lonely?". she was doing this in direct earshot of the parents of course. i wanted to punch her in the face for them.
I have to say I'm glad I never really ever got any of that stuff thrown my way. I didn't even really know that there was a "thing" about being an only child until I was way older. My best bud in high school had 4 brothers and we would talk about the differences a bit. Only very rarely in my life have I felt like I've missed out on something. But honestly, its never bothered me in any real way.
