Two things: Alpha protocol was fucked because of the lead guy changing his mind every week. I recall a good behind the scenes type of thing describing just how bad it was. Sega gave them way more money and time then why sane publisher would have. That whole screwup isn't in Sega's court.
Now my contribution: Titanfall. Holy Gods the hype, advertising, trailers, shills!
Then it collapsed within the month. Lolwut? I don't even know what happened there
See, this is an example of misuse of the thread. There's no way you can put Titanfall in "overhyped and failed." It performed really well, even if it didn't have the longevity you hope for from a shooter. (Waiting to see if any fps does this gen). I got about 1000x the play out of Titanfall than I did the most recent Call of Duty, though.
And it was definitely a good game.
What is this I don't even.

Asheron's Call 2. I absolutely loved the first game, it did so many things right for its time and then the sequel went in a completely different direction and threw most of that out, but it sure did look pretty. Best looking MMO on the market when it released by far, but the game itself had serious issues. When your shiny MMO sequel shuts down while the original game keeps going, something went wrong.
They thought player made items and a player run economy would replace NPCs for a lot of functions, but forgot that some players are assholes. Also, I mean, NPCs give the player a bit of a better foundation to work from.
Besides that, combat was more than a bit broken and had no real weight to it, and Microsoft fucked the chat servers pretty badly.

For me, it was because I was spending two or three times longer sat at in lobbies or loading screens or even just searching for a lobby than actually playing. Which is odd, because this was a then popular AAA game, so there shouldn't have been any shortage of players, which leads me to believe that their matchmaking system was just shit. And then because of the whole "online campaign" thing I was having to play the first two or three missions over and over and over again because not enough people had gotten far enough in their campaigns to play on the later maps with me.
The game was pretty fun when I was actually playing, but everything else wrapped around the game itself was shit. I don't think it really counts as a "failure" though, it just didn't live up to the hype.

You know, I was gonna throw out there something about 'what do you expect when Nintendo took a half developed game in Dinosaur Planet and added StarFox to it to make a quick buck'. Then again we also have Shadow of Mordor which is 'let's take this half developed Nolanverse Batman game and throw it in Mordor to salvage it', and that turned out awesome.
So I guess the moral of the story is 'Don't teach your fox pilots kung fu when your fans just want a new, prettier rail shooter'. At least that's my opinion.
Pathologic is a bizarre story-driven first person game taking place in an alternate world Russia, made somewhat famous by the article Butchering Pathologic. The plot is centered around a seemingly unstoppable plague, putting you in the shoes of one of three healers who's thankless task it is to try to save the strange city they find themselves in. I recommend giving the article a shot just to get a glimpse into the fascinating world the developers tried to build.
The problem lies in the gameplay. To quote the article:
Pathologic has the cruelest survival mechanics I’ve ever encountered in a videogame. As well as taking care of your physical health, you’ve got to deal with hunger, thirst, exhaustion, infection and reputation.
In a game that features a constantly clicking clock, where failure to complete the daily mission might make finishing the game literally impossible, these kinds of mechanics make for a painful, hopeless slog. Most of your time is spent rushing from place to place, fighting identical thugs and searching trash bins just to get enough money to eat. The map is awful, mission instructions are often vague, and none of the actual gameplay elements are engaging.
If I ever had the chance to develop my own game a remake of Pathologic would be one my top choices, despite me never having come even close to finishing the game. It is a fascinating mess.

How do you figure it collapsed? Wut?
And I agree with Darkewolf
From a pure populations number, it absolutely collapsed. I have a feeling Chocobolicious is talking about the PC version, where the population is hovering at or below 1,000 fairly regularly (there was a brief spike when Frontier Defense came out, but then CoD: AW came out and the horde moved over to that FPS with jetpacks).
And I'm saying that as somebody who absolutely loves Titanfall (especially Frontier Defense).

This is true of most games that people say were screwed by the publishers. Even my beloved Bloodlines is often blamed on Activision, when in fact it was horrible, horrible management from Troika that is the reason the game came out unfinished.

Are you aware that Pathologic is being remade by Ice-Pick Lodge, who just held a successfully funded Kickstarter for it last month? The wording of your post makes it seem like you aren't.
Pathologic also won numerous awards in Russia, its home country, and was well-received there. It is only a failure in the US, where even there it is a cult classic.
Grandia 1 was one of the best RPGs on the Saturn & PS1 and Grandia 2 was easily the best RPG on the Dreamcast. Then we got Grandia 3 and ugh. Combat is even better than before, but the rest of the game is worse, and before long, they kick the fun characters out of your party & replace them with annoying ones.

A fair point. For me it failed in the sense that despite how fervently I wanted to love it and how curious I was about where it was going, I could not bear actually playing through it. I feel this is a sentiment many others share, but certainly not everyone.

That is awesome, awesome news!
On the subject of Ice Lodge, if anyone here is into weird games I would recommend giving The Void a look. It is even weirder than pathologic but far more playable.
How about that BC3000AD? When I first heard about this game it was all I ever wanted and I was young and thought if I was hearing about it in a magazine it must be something that was going to release and be as amazing as it looked.
No dice. Instead it had a horrible developer who released a mess that took many patches to even run up to the point where the publisher dropped him. If only I was reading the newsgroups at the time I would have known about he who must not be named and how untrustworthy and crazy he was.
My dreams of epic capitol ship space battles were instead turned in to watching some polygons flash on the screen and then it crashing.

Oh look at you mister lucky, bragging about getting BC3000 launched far enough to see polygons. Well la dee dah!
Naah, what little I know of Krystal, the.. vixen.. I guess, is that she was the actual main protagonist of the original game concept, that was only later turned into a Fox McCloud Star Fox thingie.
(So yes, she got replaced in her own game and delegated to a minor role AND she has a whole special place devoted to her in Internet porn)

Aye...the only reason I've even heard of Dinosaur Planet (the title of the original game concept) is from a certain web series that shall not be named (lest it potentially derail the thread). And, and if stealing the spotlight wasn't enough, see that staff Fox is holding? Yeah, that was supposed to be Krystal's (also, she was originally designed with much more appropriate clothing (although, it was still pretty damned skimpy)).

I never saw it in PC magazines but I read about the audacious NSFW print ad for the game. A sexy woman holding the boxed game over her crotch and a caption reading, "She really wants it!" It says something bad about the quality of a game when the publisher has to fall back on sex to sell it.
Star Fox Adventures, where the money literally crawls away from you, Fox apparently climbs up ladders with the speed of an elderly person, and fuck the Krazoa trials. The game looked pretty for its time though.
The game got amazing reviews. It was SimCity is space, how could you go wrong? Half of the time, you'd start the game and end up in a solar system with no habitable planets. GAME OVER. The other half, you'd land on a planet and lose most of your robots before you could build your first red light district. That game was bullshit.

I actually did see that ad in a magazine. In fact I'll go one further and say I remember it (allowing for inaccurate memory here) being on the back cover of one of them. Probably PC Zone.
I suppose Firefall should be mentioned? I'm not sure where the bar on failed is, but didn't live up to the hype.
It's super hard to determine a failure state with F2P's besides how quickly they are shut down. F2P games can survive for a really long time with very little % of their base paying into it. When the new car smell wears off and your game hasn't gotten viral masses to jump on board, you can effectively let it stagnate for years. Especially when its a platform that people paid a boxed copy for, a few months of gametime, then it went F2P like SWtOR.
If you were desperate for a Zelda clone and knew before hand that Star Fox Adventures was a Zelda clone + Rare's collectathon bullcrap, it wasn't that bad of a playthrough the first time.

Eh, I think it's fair to call Firefall a failure by the standards and goals it set itself. It was a really ambitious title that now mostly just feels like an MMO FPS with not a lot going for it.
I remember that ad, I'm pretty sure 12 year old me loved it. Hell, anyone remember PC Accelerator (later PCXL) magazine? It was like PC Gamer and Maxim rolled into one. Gamergate may be one giant leap back but at least we've taken a few steps forward.
