some people i work with are losing their shit over the confederate flag thing
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has ordered Confederate flags to taken down from the grounds of the state Capitol, the latest move to banish the divisive banner from state capitals, store shelves, license plates and monuments.
Bentley issued the order Wednesday morning, one week after police say a white man killed nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina in a racially motived attack.
For the past two decades, Alabama has displayed four Confederate flags around a large monument to Confederate soldiers outside the Alabama Capitol. On Wednesday, they had all come down.
if i were still in college i would probably use this sudden rush to pull down the confederate flag int he wake of tragedy as a current events example that supports both the multiple streams and punctuated equilibrium theories of policymaking

It blows my mind that "history" and "heritage" get trotted out as arguments in favor of the Confederate flag
Like uh
That argument don't fly in Germany, I tell ya what
we've had 150 years of whitewashing and Confederate sympathizers have been able to effect a lot of change on the narrative around the history of the Civil War
such that claiming the Civil War was fought over slavery is highly controversial

They had a dude on NPR they interviewed from Charleston.
His statement, paraphrased, "Its about remembering history and a time when money flowed in the South."
Yes money from chattel slavery and a plantation based economy.
Yup. Good history to remember and be proud of there.

I know we're moving past the subject of Red Bull, but I just wanted to mention that the fact that you can take Red Bull and Jagermeister, two truly disgusting beverages, and combine them to make something that tastes like liquid candy blows my mind.
This is a nice summation of its complicated history in the US.
Remember stuff like the Nazi flag aren't banned either.
Not really talking about banning
Talking about the argument
Talking about acceptable behaviour and what you should do
Not what you are forced to do
I am heading out as my 8 hours of boredom and stupidity here are over at work.
But it has to do with the flag is acceptable because as Chanus pointed out there has been a century of whitewashing the War, the reasons behind it and even the society it was fought for.
Guess what? That has a lasting effect. And thus the flag is seen as a historical symbol of pride not one tied to some of the most heinous acts in this countries history.
Complicated historical and cultural interactions that are not washed away quickly.
They say repeating the same action over and over again and expecting a different outcome is insanity
And then they set up the mental health system in this country the way they do
That's a cruel trick
I've never liked that definition anyways
even if the action is the same environmental variables change all the time!
That's a good point, and heartening to hear in this moment, Landshark, so thank you
Oh if it makes you feel better literally 100% of the entire reasonable psych community thinks that silly aphorism is a meaningless pile.
I mean what the hell does that even mean? What, you never try a thing two times you fucks jesus.
:P I mean, rest assured that I wasn't taking it to heart as sincere life advice, I mostly just wanted to make the joke to lighten my mood after more fun with the mental health system today >_>

Their analogies just go around in a circle.

a poem from one of my favorite books of last year addresses this
something to the extent of
"they said it was heritage not hate / I asked them if they also had a British Flag."
well, this looks good enough for me.

Germany lacks the US idea on freedom of expression.
Again why it was just completely banned after the Civil War.

It just makes me want to bend over and give them an anal "oh geez!"
it's just being removed from state-sponsored displays
