I don't think I understand the point of GTA Online
I made a character, and there are all these random missions around the city
None of them seem actually doable, it'll just send out a bunch of invites but enough people never join to get a mission started
Even when I'm not the one initiating, I'll join from an invite, but then everyone leaves and I'm the host and I'm back to the previous step
Sometimes I'll see other players, and they'll kill me, and then I can request a deathmatch? Which they basically always ignore, because why would they ever accept it
Then I tried to do a Lamar mission where four people had to split into two cars and initiate a gang war, I didn't have any ammo so I requested to buy ammo on the mission start screen for $1200 and it just...didn't do it, it didn't give me any ammo so I was rolling through this mission in the passenger seat but couldn't shoot at anyone because I had no ammo

The random missions you find out in the world are designed for multiplayer. If you want missions that are mostly doable solo, those get unlocked with your rank. I think the first one opens up by rank 5 or so, and it requires an NPC give you a phone call (I think the first one is Simeon). If you want a quick few levels and some cash, hit me up and we'll run the first heist. What platform are you on?

PS4, and I got a call from Simeon, but don't see him anywhere on my map
EDIT: But my question was more like, what am I working towards here
What are all these missions building up to
Mostly it's building up to more money for better apartments to store more cars. Along the way, more outfits and maybe a yacht, helicopters, and planes. And, if you're really nutty, a tank.
And you won't actually be able to go to Simeon to get missions...either you get a text message from him which gives you the mission, or you can call him and request a mission (which will come to you in the form of a text message).

It's an MMO. It's more about the journey than the destination.
Ah, thanks, I probably won't spend any more time with it then
When I started it up and had Lamar doing the introduction, I was thinking "oh hey maybe there's more to this than just pure randomness," something along the lines of like The Old Republic
The closest thing to continuity in GTAO are the heists. Even that's not much...but there tends to be the barest of threads connecting them.
The biggest problem with the heists, though, is that they require 4 people (except the first one, that one only requires two) and if anybody in the group dies and uses up the lives available to you, the heist fails and you start over from the beginning.

It's not so much an MMO as it is a multiplayer sandbox. There's a loose story connecting the characters that contact you, but nothing approaching actual questing like in other games. Your experience in GTA Online is really what you make of it. Find a crew that does stuff you're interested in, and your enjoyment of the game will skyrocket. I know I post about my racing crew here and in chat on steam alot, but without that crew I would probably have stopped playing a long time ago. We don't only race, but that's the majority of the stuff we do whenever there's more than one or two of us together in teamspeak. When we aren't racing, or get done with an event, some of us will hang out in an invite only or friend only lobby, and then just mess around doing the "normal gta stuff" that can be found in freeroam, like VIP missions or the random events that appear or get a few teams of people together and make up our own game types.
One of them that we've done before is called Cops N Peds, where we have a Last Man Standing map with one team spawning as Cops in a police station with a bunch of cop cars and shotguns around, while the other team is the Peds that spawn out in a residential area with basic but still quick vehicles around. The object is for the cops to kill all of the peds before the time runs out, which can be very difficult if the peds are particularly adept at blending in with general GTA traffic or crowds.

Question!
If I got this for PC and wanted to do mods on my single-player game, what would I have to do to insure that I wasn't banned (or cheating like a jerk) playing online?
I've been trying to find some info but google isn't helping too much.

Completely uninstall the mod(s) and scrub every trace of scripthook out of your GTA folder before going online.

Man. That is garbage, goddamn. :l I wonder if there's some sort of thing one can download to automatically disable and re-enable mods for multiplayer and single-player respectively.

Probably. But make sure it's open source, as the community likes to hide malware sometimes. Stolen accounts etc.

You could probably have two parallel installs of it, one modded for SP and one vanilla for MP.
Is anyone still playing on PC? I'm having a lot of trouble filling out enough people to do the heists.
I pop in every now and then to free-roam and hit up some random jobs (all solo, mind you)...but if my hotel wireless can hold up, I could definitely try running some heists.

I'm on pretty much every day, but mostly do racing related activities any more. I'm entered in way too many events and constantly have to be practicing so I don't come in dead last all the time. ><
Well, turns out hotel wireless has been fairly kind to me. I pretty much only have to re-sign back in once a day at 6:30pm (AST), but after that, it's been smooth sailing. Past couple of nights I've popped in and either tooled around the city in Online for an hour, or run a couple hours worth of random jobs. Sadly, I don't think I'm going to be able to raise the money needed to buy the Albany Roosevelt

I had to take a couple of days off after a particularly harrowing pug prison break. Did you know that you can fail the part of the mission where you drive the bus to the prison

twice
How?! In the name of all that is holy and good, all it takes is to, I dunno...not shoot people while in the bus (or, I suppose, intentionally break from the path and start running people over). By the way, if you ever pull me into that heist with you, please PLEASE let me fly the plane. I can't shoot for shit and would just be a liability in the prison yard...but I can absolutely slide a prop plane behind an F-18 jet and stay there.

The message we got was something about the police spotting you, because he hit a cop on the way in. I have genuinely never seen anyone be as bad at a game as this guy was. He also crashed into someone's garden on the the way there and couldn't get out.
I had that experience a few times, I was flying the plane and spent a good few minutes tailing a fighter jet waiting for the ground team to .... I don't know, I assumed they had to train a group of monkeys to rewrite all of Shakespeare's classics, because they kept failing over and over.

Hahaha, my group did that a few times. If you run into the guard shack or go off the rails too hard, it happens.
Haha. I remember the first time I played that heist as the bus driver. I drove up all casual and waited at the gate for them to let me in. I thought the mission was bugged up because I didn't realize that they'd never raise the gate. I must have sat there for at least 30 seconds before the prisoner told me that I just had to go "through" the gate.
Then on a later run, we lost because our pilot flew close to the windmills and didn't realize that the tips of those blades move a lot faster than they look.
Another time I was flying the attack chopper and our prop plane pilot decided he wanted to pass the time by doing some crazy Blue Angels air show style close passes by my chopper.
One lag spike displacing either of our precise positions and it would have been all over.

I'm on PC, and would be interested in some PA heisting. I haven't played much in a few months, though, so I'll be a bit rusty. Time to hit the firing range, I guess.
Well, been awhile since anyone's posted in here, but I think this might get some hype up about a game that's been out for awhile now and still going strong.
Background - My racing crew leader runs a massive annual event called the Multi Class Endurance Championship. This is a 12 week event, 10 races with 2 break weekends, during which almost 90 players take part in the same races using the same cars, spread over the 3 main platforms for the game. At the start of each week's race there is a gathering in a free roam lobby where the crew usually does some kind of trick or scheme to surprise the crew leader and get some laughs out of the viewers on his stream.
This video shows what the PC platform's group came up with, which was planned and coordinated by myself and one other, with the help of 25+ supporting players acting as cannon fodder and other such things throughout.
So, my crew is currently in the middle of the Multi Class Endurance Championship Season 3, as seen in the vid I posted earlier of the pre-race event I helped plan. But another member of the crew just announced his second season of the biggest pro racing event we've ever had (the first season had around 60 people sign up and participate) with a crazy video trailer that gives a bit of info and points you to a website to sign up if you want to take part. Unlike the MCEC, this event is open to the public and anyone that wants to race can join. If you're interested in just going fast, non-contact Time Trial is for you. If you want contact racing, the Open bracket is what you want. If you're fast enough and show good race craft (IE, not spinning people out and understanding Real Life racing rules), you'll get invited to join the Semi-Pro or Pro brackets. Here's the vid, check it out, and if it's something you might like, check the site out and sign up.
I'll be participating in the Pro bracket, driving a Banshee 900R in red/blue colors. You can see it in a few spots in the video. Would be cool if some PA dudes joined up as a team to tear up the track in one of the brackets.
