I'm happy with the Leo win. I haven't seen the Revenant but I'm sure it was his typical excellent performance, and he's been passed over too many times.
spotlight is definitely the Oscar-iest best picture candidate if nothing else

I'm sure in the next week we'll find out exactly how this travesty came to pass.

I haven't been paying attention but I come back and really? Spotlight? By the books mediocre movie about a subject 20 years old gets the win because it makes the voters feel proud and on the forefront of activism, like wearing an I Voted sticker?
No, no. I reject this.

Chris Rock makes me smile. Even when he's being his most harsh (which he sure wasn't tonight). That's a pretty good indicator of quality entertainment I'd say.
Glad Leo won finally. Wish Fury Road took best movie. Also would have liked some extra love for Star Wars because that thing met expectations and deserves appreciation for hitting such a high bar.
Someone needs fired for the camera work.
Fake edit: I take it all back, Chewbacca with the last word of the broadcast. Thank you Academy!

If anything I would have expected Room to win best picture if votes were split because that seems much more original, interesting and better praised than Spotlight was.
Weirdest thing is the wiki page had it listed as winning like 20 minutes ago or so, before best actress was even done. Then it was fixed back to not decided yet.

It won best screenplay. I wasn't paying full attention, I actually thought that was the one being read off until the voiceover said they'd won for best screenplay and best picture.

The preferential voting method is weird as fuck. I'm very curious how spotlight won though.
I have no clue how the Oscar ballots work. But did Spotlight win anything else in any other category?
Like.. I would think at least one other award, unless its #2-#3 in everything puts it in the lead for consistency?
Preferential voting is something like:
If a film is ranked first by 50% of voters, it wins. This doesn't happen.
Otherwise, film with least #1 votes is eliminated, and really with those ballots' #2 votes bumped to #1. Lather, rinse, repeat, until an utterly forgettable Oscar bait movie that consistently sits at #3 on the ballots wins.

Didn't for Nightcrawler cause the Academy are morons.
Hell froze over, pigs are flying... cats and dogs, living together...
Yeah. I'm not sure why Damon was even nominated, to be honest.

Cause everyone who saw the movie enjoyed it and felt the need to give him props?
I'd cut a motherfucker that tried to play Leo off

For sure
I've heard good things about Spotlight but never amazing win-best-picture things.
Weird.
