So, how do you preorder the Navy packs if you log-in to War Thunder through Steam?

Honestly, I'll just be glad that WOWS' monopoly on the genre is ending. Which is not that I hate WOWS, I hate it a lot less than I hate WOT, but it's really annoying for that to be the only option seemingly, love it or leave it.

On the other hand, I play BB in WOWS, so maybe I'll end up disappointed with this. And it is an multiplayer experience too. Still, better than nothing.

    At least it'll be gorgeous.

Having the capital ships be the equivalent of bombing points or whatnot which the player ships have to attack/defend is an interesting decision. That could be fun, especially if the big boys are still able to shoot back (or at each other) properly.

I think that the small fast boats will make for some exciting gameplay.

I can also envision gameplay where both sides have a convoy of cargo ships that need to be protected from the enemy, but you can't just turtle up or else the enemy's capital ships will enter range and devastate the convoy from afar.

As an unrelated aside, have you ever seen a duck capture an airfield with only half of its landing gear?

I mean there is a whole range of small vessels between torpedo boats and destroyers

Like sloops and frigates and corvettes and destroyer escorts and minelayers

I'm also sorta tickled by the possibility of something like destroyers being the BR 9.0 doombringers in that mode.

Seeing actual battleshippery in the WT engine with its general range/speed difference compared to WoWS would be cool too, but I dunno how well the player base would adapt to more realistic maneuvering and 20km firing ranges for the ships. I'd love it, but WT doesn't have the most patient playerbase if the continued rain of insta-suiciding PBYs in realistic is any indication..

So, has anyone had any luck getting War Thunder and the commercial-release Rift to work?

I've got my Rift set up, finally, and go to launch War Thunder. I've got "VR Mode" checked to yes, I've edited the config.blk file to have "oculus:b=yes" in the video section, but the screen on the Rift just stays dark.

    Help?

I'm so close to the F7F-3 from the SUMMER event (I missed out on the "kill planes with defensive gunners" achievements because german defensive guns are noisemakers).

Now I just need to unlock some american tanks so that I can troll ground RB battles with 3x tiny tims.

There was no hope of my getting the F7F-3 due to my weekend schedule and Gaijin's rather restrictive definition of weekend

I didn't even attempt the ground events. I'm probably going to take a brake from the game for a bit. I'm getting war thundered out after SUMMER.

I've seen some shit after doing this event. Most notably the "supporting fire" challenges have raised my blood pressure a bit. For the "teamwork" challenges I'd just follow my random squadmate around and babysit him by executing all the bandits that they never noticed. But for supporting fire my squadmate needed to get the kill, so I was far more critical of how they flew. I could not believe how many P-47s would immediately spawn in and then flow directly to the deck and attempt to slowly turnfight the enemy. It was just unreal. Up until now, I could never understand why the P-47 had such a crazy low BR. But if enough people are trying to turnfight in the thing, then it finally makes sense...

At least all of the war thundering rolled the dice enough that I received a 50% discount on the Pz. Bfw VI(P). Can't complain about an 88mm gun and frontal armor that's 200mm thick in places. Now I just need to grind the rest of my ground vehicle line up to something of comparable battle rating.

I also unlocked several jets. The ME 163, the Narwhal, and both Arados. Jet module grind...yay.

I'm stuck at around t3 in most lines. This event did provide the impetus for me to finally get US air up to p-47s

And yeah those are crazy underrated if you know how to fly them. The rating system has a distinct bias towards turn fighting ability and bigger cannons. P-47s have neither

What's even more crazy is that ever since they re-worked the matchmaking algorithm to just look at BR, you can potentially club biplanes with P-47s if you get downtiered into a match.

    Planes burning down everywhere.

The problem is that people don't know how to fly them correctly and complain, so Gaijin lowers them in tier, while people who do know how to fly them can stomp with them against weaker opponents.

Ahah. Apparently, you need to restart Steam a couple of times for Steam VR to work, and you need Steam VR working for the rift to work in War Thunder when launched through Steam.

The structure of War Thunder matches & reward system heavily favors turn-fighters.
Energy fighting tactics work much better if you have a wingman - or better yet, if you are someone else's wingman. The classic boom 'n zoom gets suuuuuper reliable. You boom, the target brake-turns into you, you zoom if you've picked up a tail or hopefully yoyo, your wingman has an easy turn to shoot at a low-energy target, or an easy shot at whoever has decided to chase your tail.

The problem is that you don't get any points for reducing an opponent's aircraft to clay-pigeon status. So why bother, when you can just go hop into a Yak or a Zero and rack up easy kills all day.

The thing that most annoys me about boom and zooming is how you can somehow hear an approaching plane from a kilometer away over the sound of your own engine. Oh, you're diving on a tunnel visioned zero? Here, let's remind him to evade.

Although humorously, so many people are so spoiled by having that audio cue that that you can get some hilariously perfect shots and just execute people by shutting off your engine at ~1.5km and gliding in for a kill.

I was thinking about sound cues the other day, and I was wondering - is the speed of sound taken into account for gunfire sounds played to an adversary?
Or do they starting hearing BRRTTTT noises as soon as you pull the trigger? Because...

The thing that annoys me about boom-n-zoom is when I'm at 10k ft, heading east at 250mph, and I watch a FW 109 in a turn fight at ~5k feet heading west, so I keep going, only for him to disengage, climb up, catch me, and shoot me down.

While I don't know, I suspect that they hear it instantly. However, due to networking restrictions, there should be some delay between when you pull the trigger and when they receive the cue.

I think the German MG 151/20 cannon has a muzzle velocity of ~700 m/s.

Let's say that you start firing on your target at 400 meters. It should take 4/7 seconds (~0.57) for the first rounds to connect if your aim is true.

Assuming all parties have 100ms pings, it's going to take a twentieth of a second for the server to receive the news that you're attacking, and an additional twentieth of a second for all other parties to receive the notice and begin hearing the brrrt.

So the bandit now has 0.47 seconds to react to the brrrt.

Google tells me that the average human reaction time to audio stimulus is 0.17 seconds, so that leaves the bandit with 0.3 seconds to make a meaningful course correction to evade your guns.

It should be no notice for the first rounds due to their super sonic velocity, but that's still a very small window to evade.

    Edit :
whoops. Ping is round trip time, not one way. So that's an extra tenth of a second. I've corrected my math above.

At least in arcade mode, you've got to be wary of things below you since most things can readily climb up a kilometer from the deck and get guns fairly close on target out another 700m thanks to aim assist. A FW 190 has a ton of cannons with German mine shells, and they only need a few lucky stray hits to knock you out. You always want to be evasive if their nose is pointed in your general direction.

I'm especially wary of yaks. I swear that they lose zero energy in their turns and can tradition from turn fight to vertical climbs without a care in the world.

    I don't feel really comfortable unless I have a 2km height advantage.

Although if you see someone using arcade magic to climb up at you from the deck, a lot of times you can towards them at an askew angle to dodge their shots and then bait them into a climbing spiral.

Granted this is from the perspective of me in my bf109's, so I generally try to bait people into that energy vampire game if the opportunity presents itself.

It's really not such a small window when you know exactly what to expect and how to react.
Fighting game players often deal with much smaller reaction windows for example. At 60 frames per second, one third of a second is 20 frames - that's an eternity. Long enough to react with almost anything, and begin a full combo on an opponent.

Gave this a spin again in VR since I got a new video card. I am still as bad a pilot as I remember, though I am a bad pilot in prettier skies.

Also I appear to have some deep-seated hatred for torpedoes, as I drown every single one that I drop.

So, as mentioned, I got my rift working with this the other night.

    First, holy shit.

Second, everything that's not me looks like butts. Like, other planes are a vaguely plane-shaped blur. Is there a de-buttification guide somewhere? I've still got all the video settings cranked up from when I was playing on my monitor at ~250fps, so there's got to be something I'm missing somewhere.

So what's everyone's opinions about the pre-order boats with beta access?

I feel like I'm alone in thinking that JFK's PT boat is the better of the two.

Everywhere I read, everyone is enamored with talk of Russian bias, T34 turrets, and katushya launchers. However I doubt that any of those weapons will be very effective against players in an environment where everyone is in command of small fast boats that are bouncing around on the waves 24/7.

At a guess, the rockets will be reasonable effective at destroying other small boats and aircraft. The torpedos will be reasonably effective at destroying large objectives like cruisers.

Having done torpedo runs in aircraft, I can tell you that it is not easy and not safe trying to get the silly things to do the thing.

  • Options
    General_ArmchairGeneral_Armchair Registered User regular
My problem with air dropped torpedoes is that I need to sacrifice all of my energy to get low enough and slow enough to drop the damn things and then I'm a sitting duck for any half-assed pilot to execute. Much safer to drop a bomb onto the deck or try to skip one into the side.

A torpedo boat shouldn't have those problems.

I also pre-ordered the PT109 while it was on sale.

My hope is that it will be a good grinder since I suspect that its torpedoes will be good at killing capital ships and that capital ships will be a worth a good bit of SL/RP.

I also REALLY want to unlock that Schnellboat once I get the chance.

Okay, I need some help here. I can't figure out what the fuck is going on.

In sim mode, the simplest ACM is resulting in me losing control of the aircraft.

Like, attempting a barrel roll (pull up, roll left or right, continue to roll and pull) results in my aircraft stuttering and then going into some kind of spin.

This happens at basically all entry speeds and any attempted strength of the maneuver (e.g., a lazy barrel roll seems to be as affected as an aggressive one).

Like, I cannot complete a loop at all, because somewhere nearing vertical my plane just starts spinning and I end up either facing straight up or spinning a lot and facing straight down. It doesn't matter if I'm doing 200mph or 300mph upon pulling up initially.

WTF is going on? Needless to say, this has resulted in ridiculously short plane lives in Enduring Conflict.

(Also, enemy vs. friendly recognition is basically impossible in Sim mode with the Rift until you are literally right on top of the plane. Friend / foe markers need to show up way the fuck sooner.)

I've nearly finished spading my BF109 k4. The module grind was like pulling teeth, but at least I have engine injection and it can climb now.

But so far it's just be a hinderance dragging my BR up towards 6.0 (arcade BRs). Especially since people are stacking lineups to downtier their TU4's to BR 7.0....and then I get uptiered into their matches. And I've gotta say. TU4's are the WORST.

This battle station is fully armed and operational tovarisch )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
