I'm no night owl, so attending concerts can be rather torturous sometimes. Ultra gave a wrong first impression of the culture. Why cant there be more daylight events?

Nah, I'm in DC and therefore all outdoor music must be jazz and patriotic country music, at all times, forever. But it's Labor Day weekend, so I won't Ming some night events. But man how sweet would that event be around the Smithsonian's.
Porter has a show coming up in DC.
If you've never seen him live you owe it to yourself.
Hmm, his autotune riddled JRPG lyrics were not my cup of tea but I'm sure a live show will make all the difference in the world.
It's vocoloid software and voice changing stuff not autotune.
That said his show is very much about the visuals. He makes you feel the feels.
Also depending on which show it is it could be his "Live" show.
If it's his live show he controls what the screens are showing/sings the songs with voice changing stuff and uses a drumkit while live sampling to play the songs. It's p awesome.
His DJ set has rad visuals too.

Wait, you used Ultra, as in the show in Miami, as a judge of EDM culture? The most commercial, brought to you by 7-up, bro-dude-oiled-back-hair-gold-chain-sunglasses-at-midnight, show possible? The same show that gave Andy C, a don of drum and bass, 7 whole minutes of screen time, because we have to get back to listening to Generic Hard House DJ #37?
....Sorry, I really dislike Ultra. I am sad if you made a judgement of EDM culture based on Ultra. Not because you did it, how else can you judge...but because Ultra really shows off the worst of the culture at most times.

I was leaning more to the fact that the EDM events I'm seeing in DC start at midnight.l, though yes, people turn into attention whores at Ultra. My friend was in a leotard at the event. I merely favored Ultra because it was on a beautiful Saturday, instead of the dead of night (bonus points go to military employees in Korea being bound to a hardass curfew of 1AM.)
For example, when I returned stateside, the first EDM show I saw outside if Ultra was Harwell, New Years Day. The doors opened at 9 and were opening acts until approximately 12:30-2:30 AM, with a closing act until 4AM. I was so unprepared for this that I couldn't finish and went home at approximately 1:30 exhausted.
Recently I invited a friend to see Dash Berlin, and we showed up a little later at 10:30. My friend loved the massive, seizurelicious venue but he was concerned the place was "dead" until midnight. He left early exhausted at 1AM and I followed soon after at 2:30.
I'm going to power nap tonight in preparation for a show, with the hopes that I actually finish it. Contract when I saw Amon Amarth, which ended at midnight.
EDIT - For a Halloween show I'm going to be dressed as the Bloodborne Hunter

"EDM culture" is the logical conclusion of the commercialization of festivals and dance music, so I'm not sure how one could separate it from sponsorships and dudebros. The culture you might find at DEMF or similar is a separate entity entirely.
EDIT - I saw Armin van Burren last night. He played from 12:30 to closing (4 AM.) I've never seen a main act play so long there. The only reason I left at 3:40 was because my knee couldn't take anymore. That guy is a beast!

In which a DJ on Reddit responds to a question about how to play a freestyle set and feel out the crowd.
Have a shit ton of music in a certain bpm range organized by genre.
Start with something "safe" by judging the crowds reactions to the person on before you (if you're on first just do you, it doesn't matter if you slay your set, no one is going to go crazy for you, and you dont want to wear out the crowd so you may as well do something unique). Test the waters with something a little different and if the crowd likes it pull back to safety for a track and then push further into that sound. This makes the audience want it even more. Keep building towards a different vibe with a "two steps forward, one step back" selection. If they're not into it keep trying to push single tunes but always go back to that "safe" vibe between tests.
For example:
I spin house techno UKG and grime (120-140ish bpm). I load up a stick with 100+ tunes. Start with some housey groovers to get the crowd swaying, throw in something with a more skittering beat and see how the crowd responds, if they're into it, play one tune that goes back to straight grooves then hit em with something a little skippier. Judge response. Repeat until pulling up skepta and gun-handsing.
If they're not into the first skittering beat, transition back to grooves, play something darker, if they're into it pull back on the next track and then go a bit harder. Judge response. Repeat until ripping blawan hunched over the decks.
If they're not into either just keep groovin.
If they respond to both, get someone to pour some drinks and go fuckin IN.
Always end the set with a cheeky French touch/filter disco track.
That's my MO anyways.

Oh yeah that Porter Robinson & Madeon show? It turns out they added another date for it: Nov 10, which is the Thursday before the Veteran's Day weekend. Plus, instead of starting at midnight, they will start at 9, for non-night owls like myself

Do it up man!
They just added a local one that I grabbed tickets to! SO fucking excited! They sold out of tickets during pre-sale and had to add a second night to that one too.
So currently my next 3 shows I have tix for:
Tritonal in Oct (halloween show a friend is going to paint me up for)
Porter in Nov
Seven Lions the week after Porter.
Okay, if Trance is gonna have sappy lyrics, can they have *good* sappy lyrics? All these songs on DI having a young male singing about how great things "used to be" comes off as No Country For Young Men with a splash of First World Problems. Being a grown up doesn't have to suck people! Just ask these elderly couples I see partying and grinding :winky:
From now on when I hear these kinds of lyrics I will think of a 28 year old male whining that he can't do E anymore because his career has drug tests.
Damn, I was just listening to some soft electronica on the tubes, shit start popping randomly and suddenly this comes on! It's so good! And so is the whole damn EP it's on, too! holodeckrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mentiras-hd030 *giddygiddygiddy*
I just looked up the group that played at Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen, when I visited on 2016.09.16 -- The Minds of 99. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klVnAHp41Kg
If you've never been to Tivoli, it's the only permanent music venue with the vibe and energy of a good weekend music festival that I've found to date, as it's essentially a huge outdoor stage surrounded by an amusement park replete with rides, roller coasters, games, bars, restaurants and even an alternate indoor theater.
I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to keep shilling those Boan guys! They're my jam right now. I'm loving how they partly sound like some '80s/'90s synth band... but with more clubbish beats?
The spanish lyrics are a cool originality too (I thought it was greek at first...) and lend the tracks a little more bite. More releases plz!!!!
Do not attempt to leave the station as this is impossible. The unofficial, unconfirmed spiritual force has taken possession of all London Underground stations. The next trains arriving on all platforms are carrying the souls of the dead on their final journey from all the gathering rooms of the Afterworld.
The train you are riding is bound for glory. You are being taken to a new land, where work is plentiful and love abounds. Your lives were empty. But now they're full. Now you have joined us, we are as one. Brothers and sisters, the time has come.
Well I haven't stuck my head into these forums in maybe 10 years, so, hi. What do you know, there's an electronic music thread. Anyone into psychedelic electronic / psybient? I've been enjoying Globular's recent release, it's a mix of what I love in shpongle and ott. Also, does anyone here produce music?
Porter Robinson and Madeon's Shelter performance, holy shit. I completely misjudged Robinson. Originally turned off by the autotune and anime, I am now spellbound by the duo performing via two dj sets, two drum kits and vocals.
