I figured it out, they finally had enough of people complaining about white bordered cards from the past, and decided to show us something WAY worse than white border could ever be.
But these masterpieces are straight garbage. I kinda like the gold border on Maelstrom Pulse, and the Bolas horn on the stamp, but otherwise they fucked up what should have been a slam dunk.
The thing is the masterpiece sets so far have had a theme and they implied, when they announced it, that they'd keep doing that
Zendikar was lands, Kaladesh was Artifacts. So just to have a smattering of 'idk modern playables' is really boring, along with the fact that the designs are all ass ugly? Yikes.

Some Notes:
* Right of the bat, Im still on Cranes. From my understanding, most people have moved off Cranes now and focused more on things like Crucible/Baubles/etc. Also a simpler mana base. Im stickign to cranes for now, but do plan to try the Craneless variants in the future
** Spellskite just.... isnt what it used to be. Im probably going to be cutting the MD one for Infernal Tutor by the next time I go to the store (they have Tutors available). I just rarely want to draw it game 1 and even post board its not that great over a cheaper welding jar. With Infect being less of a thing I think moving off Skites a bit is correct
*** The sideboard is still evolving as my store continues to post its meta breakdown (they started tracking about 4 weeks ago, its really cool). The leyines are a reaction to the super heavy representation of Burn as well as being great against Abzan/Jund. One thing I'm looking to try is 1 or 2 copies of Padeem. People have been trying it and are apparently quite impressed in grindier games.

The only way this works is if the pillars actually look 3d in person, but the text is still super garish pop eygptophilia
Who the fuuuck greenlit these?

HOW
WHO
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN??????????????
the font is borderline outright orientalism

But uh
They do kinda need to be pretty.

So there's that
Oh well, at least I won't be opening any so it doesn't really matter.
Ambiguous Power/Toughness box, too.
It now has a 0.666* PT
If it weren't for the mana cost I'd never guess those are MTG cards
If it was just an ugly ass border like vehicles that wouldn't be too terrible but fucking with card legibility is so stupid!
there's cool elements in here. I love the horns around the holo stamp.
but god it's just so much, and so unreadable
They're really leaning into Nico Bolas for Amonkhet, huh?
Especially when his card might not even be in it lmao
the new arts are nice but I can't get over the rest of it to enjoy it
(also it's 4 counterspells: Counterspell, Force, Pact, Cryptic)
goddamnit, I really like the new art for Mind Twist and Vindicate, but they're surrounded by SO MUCH STUPID SHIT
Wait...
