Well, animal cruelty is a pretty good indicator of violent behavior towards humans, if nothing else, and seems to speak to a general lack of empathy, which seems like something that ought to be discouraged.

I was going to agree with you, and then I started thinking about what sort of functions would be classified as "drinking functions," and the only one I can come up with is wine-tasting. So yeah, it'd be pretty retarded to go to a wine-tasting and not drink, but at most other social functions, there's plenty of non-alcoholic beverage provided. Thus, alcohol consumption is rarely the ostensible purpose of most social gatherings, so why should there be so much social pressure to drink that someone who forebears be viewed askance?

I don't think you understand how that works: If you don't have empathy, you don't have it. That's it. If you can't do it, you can't do it and it doesn't matter what anyone tries to do about it.
Cats aren't some kind of "gateway victim". If I want to kill something, and there's no cats around, I'm not going to say "Oh, well, shit, I guess I'll have to do without." No, I'll find a hobo in a remote alley and kill him. That's the way it works.
