The professor said the speech doesn’t have to succeed in persuading our audience. But you’re supposed to do audience analysis and adjust your approach in the weeks before the speech. Hypothetically I think her speech could get an A (except aside from the content it was really bad, holy shit)
I'm struggling to determine the point of the speech then, if persuading those listening was not the goal.
It had a thesis and argument, after all. It wasn't descriptive.
actually being persuasive isn't part of the grading, because some students believe things that are hard to defend and that's outside the curriculum of a speech class
They moistly come out at night, moistly.

it should be "how persuasive was it, considering how easy or hard it was to argue for?"
the reason a student picked their topic, be it actual belief or just the joy of trying to argue in favour of something preposterous, doesn't matter, does it?

The goal was to persuade. He made the point several times that it shouldn’t just be informative. But he said it doesn’t have to succeed in changing people’s minds. Some people just pick a really hard topic that no one is gonna move on.
One might say, then that’s a bad topic for this assignment. But he said such speeches could be graded well if they had thoughtful modes of persuasion.

... So I helped my mom move into her new place on Saturday, right?
And the previous owner wasn't the previous occupant, they were basically doing a reno and flip, so they'd sort of picked a non-offensive grey with which to paint every room in the house.
We spent the entire evening discussing the nature of greys, is my point.
I was going to say "shades of grey" but now that's code for porn because adult fans of teenage media ruin everything.
I just went to an academic advisor for help picking courses this spring. He showed me that I still have room for electives. I asked, what about CS courses?
And he gave me some phone numbers for Colorado State University and basically said, call them, it’s a case by case thing
Uh
Help...ful...

what about a class on unit testing
don't be ridiculous, we don't need to teach programming students how to do any actual real-world programming

i guess, that's still not "does this speech manage to convince the actual students in the class?" which is probably a bad thing to grade on.
