hot take, Jackson Pollock is bad and the only reason his paintings are worth anything is because the FBI was uneasy with how popular social realism was in the US and spent a lot of time and effort trying to replace it with an art movement that means everything and nothing
My first instinct reading this was “drip painting can’t melt steel beams” but nope, turns out the cia actually did back the organization behind some of the exhibitions of his work.

I think one of the most irritating things about conspiracy theories is that they make it really hard to believe some of the actual fucked up shit the government does
in the past I've been unable to convince people about the Iran coup/Operation Ajax because of that
It's even worse with fake conspiracy theories that have lead to actual real life stuff, try and explain PizzaGate to someone who has no idea what that is and if they don't come away from the conversation thinking that you're totally deranged then you didn't explain it properly

The paintings are bad because people keep upholding the painting when the process was the entire point.
It's like praising the dance floor at a Salsa competition or the tar on a racetrack.

social realism or socialist realism? afaik the CIA effort was directed at the latter. Socialist realism was the official art of the Soviet Union and is a different thing to social realism, which was more Cuba and places not in Russia.
Socialist realism was basically propaganda and wasn't popular in America.
I love Socialist Realism, it's one of my favourites. Because the artists were caught between portraying Socialist propaganda and portraying real life, so you end up with a lot of paintings that seem ironic or have unintended (or intended) undertones. My current avatar is a Socialist Realism painting that I love. It's not even a painting but a study for a painting. It portrays a revolutionary looking on the decadent palace of the Tsar.
I also love looking at the transition from abstract avant garde revolutionary art to state regulated realism. Constructivism in particular was an architectural movement that started out bold in the early days of the revolution and was eventually turned into neoclassicism by Stalin in his push to rid Russia of degenerate abstract or challenging art.

nope, social realism
they were worried about it because it was pretty easy to look at common social realism artwork and interpret some anti-capitalist stuff from it, in addition to the fact that it is deliberately accessible
Are you sure? Because there's a bunch of articles talking about Pollock and the CIA reacting against Socialist Realism, but a google for Pollock fbi Social Realism gets this thread. I'm still looking though. edit- The few sites so far that make reference to social realism are likely confusing it with socialist realism, as they are saying that social realism was the USSR style, which it wasn't. Social realism was international and had a strong presence in America. It makes sense that the CIA effort was directed at socialist realism as that was striking at Russia. I haven't found an FBI effort yet.

It’s pretty obvious he’s referring to the Congress for Cultural Freedom and just misspoke dude.

I don't care about that, I'm just annoyed at the conflating of social realism and socialist realism.

I think it might have been both?
I mean, I think the CIA were probably aiming more for socrealism, but if they hit social realism as well, then that would be considered a side benefit. Social realism was a big art style amongst US popular front groups - it's working class, it's critical of social structures, a ton of the artists involved had socialist beliefs. I can't imagine the CIA being thrilled about it as the popular artistic movement, given their whole deal.

I know that the FBI had a big problem with It's A Wonderful Life, which is bridging things over to cinema a bit, but I'd say still coming from the same place as social realism.
I finally watched Wonder Woman last week. Unfortunately I did not like it as much as the internet consensus seemed to. It wasn't bad or anything, but a ton of it just didn't work for me at all.

I think the final fight of that movie is absolutely atrocious, but its still really good and fun overall

It was definitely an easy watch. I think the plot contrivances just bugged me more than they usually do for super hero movies, probably because of the condensed yet sparse WW1 setting. Also the villain was super lame

What really sucks is according to Entertainment Weekly among the other nominations is The Big Sick and I guess that movie just gets it's lunch eaten now.

I'm watching Justice League for the opposite reason. A couple of friends of mine who I don't get to see that often wanted to see either Justice League or Thor with me, and I'm already committed to watching Thor with my mom over Thanksgiving.
