It looks like Alex Schmidt is still on board, he’s one of their big talents in my opinion. I hope they don’t cut out the video content entirely, because I think it’s pretty great. Their article content I can take or leave, I consider them to have kind of run dry several years ago, as progenitors of the pop culture hot take.
A lot of article writers got fired as well, I think. So are they just cutting staff to pay freelancers? Because, if so, uhhh fuck that.
They've always had some vaguely sketchy attitudes towards freelancers, they underpay for a lot of those articles. I suspect that they're getting rid of people more based on location than anything else, it looks like they pretty much just shut down their LA branch. Man, Daniel O Brien is a real talent though, it sucks that there's going to be less of him. I guess this kills After Hours too.
Whelp, turns out they may not be keeping Personal Experiences articles going. Or if they are, they're going to be getting another editor. :bigfrown:

Time to go binge After Hours.

i mean at a certain point someone with money is going to go "hmm there's more people on the left in the country it's probably more money to cater to them"
The rich people who are investing in news organizations aren't really doing so to make money. Gothamist and all of its sister sites got shut down the instant they unionized, and all of their shit got wiped from the internet, which is...not what you do when you're in it for money. LA Weekly got bought, and pretty much all of their staff got fired, and it took like a week before anyone even figured out who bought them. And the one person left on staff is...not left-leaning.
Nobody has really figured out a way to monetize this shit yet, so the value is less in how much money you can make than it is in controlling how news is delivered.

a lot of the time they're willing to take a short-term loss in order to influence the culture in ways they think will benefit them in the long term
like the libertarian creeps who bought the la weekly and fired all the leftist staff. or that billionaire who closed down gothamist for unionising. both those people lose money in the short term, but by suppressing union activity and leftist speech they make it generally easier for rich people to concentrate wealth
Some News and Cracked After Hours were some of my favorite shows to watch whenever they got put up. Some really good talent both for writing and comedy that were just let go
Some of the dudes who got kicked to the curve today have decided to start a patreon for a new project.
Which I totally didn't forget I can't link to don't be silly,
Its called small beans if anybody wants to track it down.

I mainly only made the time for After Hours in my schedule, but several of their other videos were great too. I hope a spiritual successor to After Hours can be funded, it'll be a sad day if it truly dies.

Don't worry, they totally started using 4 completely different people for a second AH a couple of months ago.
Of course, one of them was Cody, so... I guess they'll need to swap him out.

Well now who’s gunna pay Seanbaby to make homophobic sarcasm about mascots and advertising from the 70s and 80s?
Alright, so. Apparently what happened was Cracked somehow pissed of the parent company (E.W. Scripps), or their shareholders, and Scripps decided to layoff 90% of the staff at once.

Private commiseration with the writers and staff fired. No real outside written source on it yet, so I'm going to stick with "believe it or not as you will" rather than out which of them said it.
Featuring two of the seven listicle items I submitted being totally cut, mistaking a "haute chocolate" sundae for hot chocolate (don't know if that was me or editing, actually), and most of my jokes being rewritten. But the Flava Flav joke was all mine, at least.
Look upon the crappy article I wrote while bored in physics, ye mighty, and despair.

I suspect that the people from After Hours 2 (it was its own separate show) didn't make it generally. It wasn't great? But it seemed like it would probably find its feet given time.

They need to figure out ads, so that people won't block them.
The first thing they need to do is
1.) Do the work so that the ads you put in people's browsers aren't essentially viral vectors.
Apply stricter standards to ad submission
2.) Cut out auto running live video stream - adverts
Continue to block users with ad-blockers, but convince folk with that blocked webpage, that the site is protected and easy to whitelist.
But as of things right now, I can't recommend any computer to not have ad blockers turned on by default
I have a work PC with this site and a few other trusted places whitelisted.
Then at home, I generally browse on the ps4 or 3DS or Vita, and there is no adblocker.
The absolute garbage, in terms of adverts, they autoload on some sites is crazy.
It really annoys me that I've never had any adblocker on my computer, but I still regularly get accused of using them by Hulu and other streaming video sites just because their stupid ads didn't load properly, and it softlocks the stream.
Cracked has ads that have redirected me to malware sites before.
Wong/Pargin has acknowledged that listeners of the podcast and viewers of the articles/videos have complained about the ads and that they are willing to drop malignant advertisers but that doesn't seem to be true about the mobile site. I've always had trouble with it.

I'm not entirely surprised, because they're still owned by Demand Media. I freelanced for those heartless motherfuckers as one of my three concurrent jobs back in the Lean Years, and they would absolutely shoulder-check their mother in front of a bus if she stepped between them and a quarter on the sidewalk.
Still, it's insane to see that much talent dumped all at once. I can only hope that Cody O'Brien finds a way to continue something like Some News, inexplicably the most vital media outlet of this beastly year of our lord 2016, and I will follow DOB anywhere he goes.

I have been informed that Demand Media no longer owns Cracked. I appreciate the correction, and am using this second post to clarify that while Demand Media is not responsible for this particular disaster, they are nevertheless a pack of worthless jackals.
I'm trying to figure out when cracked went from bookmarked, daily reading, to someplace I might visit if someone threw a link at me.
I think it was Agents of Cracked with Dan O'Brien + Michael Swaim. That was 2010ish?
After Hours was way better, and way less dependent on random sociopath humor
I appreciate some of the webcomics they sponsored too.
Something interesting that I came across in regards to these layoffs at Cracked.com. E. W. Scripps, the parent company reported disappointing 3rd quarter results and had blamed Cracked.com for these losses. Their articles from the Kurdish fighters in Iraq were must reads.

Yeah, uh, I'll be honest I have no idea how the hell Matt was able to talk Cracked into sending him places, but he fuckin went places.
