For those curious, that's still considered to be a safe R seat, and there's more quotes from the family here:

    https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/arizona-congressman-paul-gosars-siblings-endorse-opponent-10849863

Seems to be a lot of "holy shit, what's happened to our brother, he seems mentally unwell." One of them previously ran for governor of Wyoming as a Democrat.

And some serious triage in Pittsburgh:
The National Republican Congressional Committee's independent expenditure unit is cancelling its remaining ad reservation in the Pittsburgh media market through Election Day – a potentially grim sign for Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-Pa.).

Oh for FUCK'S SAKE, Ted Cruz busting out the "Dixiecrats were the racists of the south! That's why I'm proud to be a Republican!" in this debate.

Godspeed. I doubt I'd be able to stomach watching that thing.

Cruz is winning the debate and Beto is floundering.

Beto's armed with facts, logic, and reason. Ted's armed with rhetoric, empty promises, and character attacks. The year is 2018.

It's not even close, Ted's running circles around him.

Rhetorically he's probably winning because all he has to do is say "Ooh, liberal bogeyman, more radical than Hillary, than Bernie, than Warren! George Soros, out of state money, might abolish ICE, be scared!"

    It sadly comes to this:
Remember the U.S. presidential debates of 2016? Remember how the entire liberal establishment thought Hillary Clinton had won, mainly because she made actual points, rather than shambling around the stage shouting about Muslims? What’s the one line from those debates that everyone remembers now? It’s “Nasty Woman.” What’s the visual? It’s Trump literally skulking around Hillary, dominating her with his body. It’s theatre. And right now the bad actors are winning.

From "No, I Will Not Debate You" by Laurie Penny.

Cruz is using theatrics in a venue that rewards them.

Cruz asked if he thinks violence against unarmed black men is a problem that needs to be addressed, starts talking about how he's been to too many police funerals...

Moderator: “Say something nice about your opponent”

Beto: “Cruz is a good family man and I admire his sacrifice and service to this country which takes him away from his kids, even if I disagree on the direction we want to go”

Cruz: “Yes my opponent the socialist also likes his children”

Beto: (actual quote) “True to form...”

Ah okay, so it’s just Cruz being Cruz then, not necessarily Beto doing badly. That’s fine honestly. Let Cruz play to his base and make them nice and comfortable and complacent.

Honestly watching the whole thing I thought Beto did great, but since Cruz didn’t eat a booger and told a bunch of lies that the moderators did not fact check the narrative from the media will be that he stood toe to toe with Beto and came out unscathed

Like when the “say something nice about your opponent” results in “I respect my opponent’s enthusiasm for socialism because he is a Bernie Sanders clone and you should be afraid of that” and the mods don’t call him on it, why bother having a formal fucking debate

    Why bother having mods?

Just have a TV screen that occasionally prompts the candidates to lie and go to their stump

I don't think that's accurate at all though. Clinton didn't win/"win" because she made actual points. Her strategy was to do exactly what she did: demonstrate Trump's complete unfitness for office and general insanity and blatant sexism. Like most of her campaign it was predicated on the idea that Trump was very obviously unacceptable to the american public and so all she had to do was show his true face to america. It just turns out that, no, he wasn't unacceptable. They just nodded their heads along. Her basic assumption that the american people had standards was wrong.

I very much doubt Beto is trying to prove Cruz is a crazy person.

I don’t see how Cruz stomped Beto, granted I’m biased against him but he came across as slimy and, more definitively, smarmy as fuck

Like there should be a picture of Cruz in the dictionary next to the word “smarm”

It is Texas. Telling voters to pull the Republican lever shouldn't exactly be a hard sell.

    I am Texan, I’m aware

Cruz doesn’t need to encourage his base to show up, he needs to try and get Beto’s to stay home

I don’t see any of his scare tactics working!

This is what Cruz is counting on, he doesn't want people to see this. Plus, he unfortunately has leverage so if Beto ever has a chance to debate him this is his chance.

Kinda par for the course for Republicans. Can't help themselves from being complete douchebags after they get a win.

Sometimes they get away with it. Sometimes they don't. But if they ever do become capable of hiding their rampant douchebaggery, we could be in a world of shit.

Oh man, Gosar is the dentist who knows body language from the Peter Strzok hearings. Maybe that's when his family was like "man, our brother is insane."

Self-righteousness is incompatible with coalition building.

To the people who support Ted, this doesn't have the same message it has for the rest of us.

"I mean yeah, why shouldn't police be able to kill unarmed black men, in their own apartments, with impunity? Ted Cruz 2018!"

It speaks volumes that he thinks this is a damaging video clip

Ted Cruz seems to be taking the unusual position of “pro-shooting unarmed black people in their own homes”

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for him
