Mori and I obtained the dates of our work Christmas parties to give to his parents so we can have the kids sleep over at their house on those days.
My work’s party is on a Monday, which at first seemed odd, but thinking about it it makes sense for a 7-day retail store to hold a party on a Monday; Mondays/Tuesdays are typically our quietest days and so the maximum number of employees are able to attend on a Monday.
I’ve been hearing a lot about how legendary my work’s Christmas parties are, so I finally asked the store manager why they’re so legendary.
Store manager: Well, there’s copious amounts of weed. And food. A lot of food. Really great stoner food.
Me: What about entertainment?
Store manager: Um... there’s weed. A ton of it. And free Ubers so no one has to drive.

Every place I've worked at has always had these stories about their legendary parties, be it the summer BBQs or holidays and they always seem to have ended right before I get there.

the best work Christmas parties I've been to were thrown by the bookstore
those were legitimately great parties
at one of them I got trashed and talked to this guy who claimed he was a disciple of Frank Dux
I might be signing up to my next and final stage of formal qualifications/exams sooner than I thought! A couple of people at my work are wanting to start soon and we might as well go together and support each other.
Considering it'd take about two years before I have my actual exam it isn't too bad but I kinda liked not having to study! (I won't really have to start studying for at least a year minimum).

You ever been to a Christmas Party on weed?

My work used to have Christmas parties with Bingo for prizes, even $5,000 cash for a couple prizes.
As of last year it was unceremoniously changed to a Christmas luncheon (also I hate that word). The only good part of that being, they gave us all $125 gift cards to grocery stores, which I used to buy some really expensive alcohol.
Ours are usually two drink tickets, food and pretty great door prizes.. Nearly 3 years ago at my department Christmas party I won a ukulele for having the ugliest sweater. I now go to a monthly ukulele club. So, win?

Exciting?? Scary??
I'd lean more toward exciting. I find that the longer I've been out of school the harder it is to get back into good study habits, so the sooner you get to it the easier it will be. This is strictly for the benefit of future-Liiya though, it might not be a ton of fun for present-Liiya.
I've taken 1 week of vacation this year, namely: this week.
Somehow it's the same week that three professionally-relevant talks, two teaching skills seminars, two chapter meetings, and one extremely relevant ethics talk are all happening. After about two months of bupkis going on.

You make a very good point! Present day me wants to just sit and drink tea at my desk all day. Future me knows it's gotta be done.

Oh, crap. Another regional director got promoted, and this time it's a region and department I actually wouldn't mind overseeing. Kind of the best-case scenario for me under the current structure, actually. Among other things, I'd be overseeing Honest Jedoc's Successor's Down-Home Bookateria, which is nice.
I guess I got to apply for it and spend some time having anxiety over job interviews, huh? Dammit, I'm going to have to buy a second pair of shoes to go to job interviews.

In two years we’ll be hearing about Jedoc’s Bookateria of Congress.
I'm starting to wonder if I sound angry or annoyed when I'm not? Because like I report on an issue that I've encountered to my manager and they thank me for reporting it and later on they apologize for me having to deal with it even though reporting issues is part of my job since we're kind of like the problem-spotting/solving part of the company?

About six months back I applied for a really cool sounding job that matched me to an uncanny degree and was offered an interview. Pre interview they sent me some stuff that made it clear the job would be a 30-40% pay cut for me, so I declined interview and moves on
They've just got back in touch. Apparently they couldn't find anybody with an appropriate profile and have managed to substantially increase the salary. It's still a pay cut but now I know they can be pushed harder than they thought it seems worth a conversation.
Still taking a job with a pay cut just seems abhorrent. It would be in a university though so salaries are generally fairly bad but there may be better perks
Either way, better news than I've had recently which has been a struggle to find anything that excites me

The bolded there is a lie. They don't want to pay people and no one qualified will take the job.

I love when people are sick at work, then pretend like they're not sick and go "oh it's just allergies" and get super defensive when you start lysoling/alcoholing everything then you wind up sick with what they had the next day.
Why the fuck can't you just stay home? I really wish we'd separate our sick time from our vacation time because these fucks just try to save it for an additional week of vacation.

Hello yes hi this is me on vacation with a nasty cold.
Please use your sick days
If you have them.
Which is not a given in the US.
(To be clear: if you do, then fuck yeah, use them, you dummies. If not, then it's hard to demonize someone for trying to pay their bills so desperately while their employer has created an unsafe work environment.)

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust
Well we do have sick days so I'm going to demonize them.
Call them from home as you are dying from the cold and tell them it's just allergies.
And then change their username to itwasjustallergies and reset their password to that and they should never ever live it down.

I think I'm coming down with another cold or something. My out-of-practice immune system plus living with a toddler means this is probably just my permanent state for the next 4 months.

The CDC is reporting that last year's flu season was so deadly/large because only 40% of eligible adults were vacinated. This was the lowest in about 7 or 8 years.

Ever since our social worker took over our breakfast thing, suddenly I am having very full and enjoyable breakfasts. Usually I would be lucky if I had a croissant or bagel, but yesterday and today I had a bowl of Cheerios AND a toaster waffle. And for only $5 more per month than we were giving the other lady. And she says she's got enough leftover that she might do monthly special lunches or something. What a difference, night and day, it's been.

That's a fair bit of ass-covering. It was also the least effective flu vaccine of the last decade or so, providing zero immunity against what ended up being the most prevalent strain (and the year before was the second least effective, which IMO contributed to the low vaccination rate). Not that I expect perfect clairvoyance from the CDC, predicting which strains will require vaccination is fucking hard, but. Worth pointing out.
