Man, Demi makes a pizza the hut joke and then miel thinks he made it up and then he says he doesn’t think he did and they continually make me feel...pretty old.
If I have one complaint about the podcast it’s that they seem to embody the stereotype of young people being just...forcefully ignorant about anything that happened more than a year ago.
Or like, if you didn't see it at all? Why the fuck are we expecting people to watch movies made before they were born exactly?
Spaceballs isn't even particularly good it's got like three or four funny bits

When I first saw spaceballs I was so young that I thought it was an actual Star Wars movie and kept trying to find the star wars scene where Vader fights Luke in a white room right up until high school.

Pizza the Hutt is a pretty ...easy joke to come up with. It's not terribly clever it's just basic word-association. It's also been referenced enough you could pick it up from somewhere and have no idea where, which is what it sounds like happened here.

Totally agree (well except spaceballs not being good because i have a soft spot for that movie) but it does get really hard to talk to young people about pop culture sometimes though, especially since a lot of them still like stuff from the same properties as us ancient desiccated husks, just they never saw the old shit.
An example would be me talking about the new star wars movies with my 22 year old coworker who has never seen the original trilogy and started with the prequels. It's difficult to do that! But that's totally not their fault.
Basically, fuckin hell hollywood come up with more new stuff for this generation.

Spaceballs does have a lot of good jokes and non-sequitors.
They've gone to plaid
The whole bit about getting the movie on VHS to find the next plot point
The whole merchandising bit (which is especially hilarious when you discover that the entire reason it got made was because Brooks made a deal with Skywalker ranch to never sell Spaceballs merchandise) It's gone from suck. To blow.
1-2-3-4-5? That's ridiculous, it's the kind of combination an idiot puts on his luggage!

I definitely saw Spaceballs before Star Wars. My mother and I were both fairly baffled if I remember right because she hadn’t seen Star Wars either.
We laughed at the Alien bit.

I find it pretty easy to talk to young people about pop culture if you talk about current pop culture.
Like, I don't expect someone who is 20 to know stuff from the 80s, just like as someone who is 30 I think it would be weird if people expected me to have thorough knowledge of stuff from the 70s.

everyone’s gonna have their blind spots anyway, and the specifics of space balls are way beyond relevant to current pop culture
but also miel is like not even two years younger than me, there isn’t some great generational divide or something
Anyway, people who are bad at Smash should be the only people who are allowed to play it on streams. If you know how to do "combos" you are disqualified. If you know what all the different buttons do and use all of a character's abilities in a match you are on thin ice and had best watch yourself.
i just watched them get their ass handed to them by the unlock fight for ROB and i am so deeply frustrated
Good, sit in that frustration, really stew in your irritation that people aren't as good at a dumb video game as you are, really confront that demon, maybe even slay it.
i don't think i'm too alone in finding it irritating when someone is struggling to do something you perceive as easy
i think there's abouuuuuut ten thousand "brad at video games" posts on this forum that would demonstrate that it's a pretty common feeling to have
you specifically deserve it though you human refuse
Okay, I really like this punchup. Very fun song idea, very well executed.
I also learned that I get irrationally irritated by people not recognizing a pull from Palahniuk's Survivor, and even more irritated by them not grokking what it means. It's Chuck Palahniuk! It's not very deep!
When I first saw spaceballs I was so young that I thought it was an actual Star Wars movie and kept trying to find the star wars scene where Vader fights Luke in a white room right up until high school.
This is me but I was CONVINCED there was a scene where Darth Vader drank coffee through his helmet.
It is extremely weird that this week’s Beastcast is a rebroadcast of a last year episode without ever ever mentioning it
it feels like this was a mistake?
it was such a strange bit of gaslighting because I thought nothing of it until I heard Dan refer to Mario, Zelda, and Battlegrounds as games he played a lot of "this year"
and then my ears were perked up for any contemporary references at all, and they never came
and my mind could only be at peace when Jeff said "it's 2017"
I dunno, people talking about a tv show but not really about the tv show all the time?
They probably finished GOTY really late, realized they had to put something up for the Beastcast, hurriedly picked their call-in show from a year ago and put it up, then Vinny was too tired to put up a proper explanation and now he's sleeping.

without being a beastcast listener i definitely thought that first remark was a facetious one on the repetitive, cyclical nature of goty

don’t you tempt me, emily. don’t you plant that perfect seed in my mind I swear to god
He made a spaceballs joke? I guess I expected it since he referenced it?
Also...I’ve seen more movies made before I was born than ones made after I was born. It’s not a requirement but it’s not some crazy thing

I agree with this, logically. I was very surprised at how annoyed I got!
I am not surprised that I'm annoyed at Miel shittalking Fall Out Boy. They're good! They're dumb as hell, but they're good!!!
if E3 is truly beginning to die then this is definitely what will replace it
are you ready for this fucking thing to go full 10-hour-long WWE pay-per-view
cause that's where we're headed
Watch Out For Fireballs is doing Baldur's Gate II all this month.
Some good listening.
Some good tamping down of the urge to play through that game again.
Just like E3!

putting it up and presenting it as a new episode even though it isn't and causing me to continually question my own cognition isn't gaslighting?
