I just had a almost 30 minute game. I had one card left in my deck, had no way to get through my opponents 30 health next turn.

    I seal away their Lyra.

    They forfeit.

Like, why?! You were going to win! You had this!

    I don't understand people.

edit: and the round before someone who had me dead to rights quit when I casted Teferi. He wouldn't have even had to kill him.

Did they instantly concede, or did they rope twice and then surrender? The servers have been real screwy all afternoon and I even have the game launch a second instance of the client multiple times for no reason.

Nope. Straight up seal away resolves, they concede as soon as the animation ended.

It pretty strongly implies a final showdown between Bolas and 7 walkers, with Bolas and 6 walkers dying/desparking/getting Norted

I think they are going to kill a lot of planeswalkers and start working on a new cast. (Last flame is obviously Jace who will live forever.)

the ongoing adventures of the gatewatch is the most successful the magic storyline engagement has ever been among consumers so i can promise that they are not killing a majority of the main characters

(also we already know from the Chandra comic book (yes, there's a chandra comic book) that chandra and tibalt are both alive after the results of sparkwar2019)

Urza is going to possess Karn and/or be reincarnated somehow and sacrifice a bunch of the current planeswalkers to defeat Bolas and then ascend into the position of the new ultimate evil in the MTG multiverse.

Dude has a history of sacrificing planeswalkers for the greater good.

i definitely believe that's possible that some of the story for the next few sets will be planeswalkers stuck on planes and finding ways off

I honestly hope they're having some big epic battle between the Gatewatch and Bolas and his minions and all of Ravnica is in civil war, Garruk planeswalks in and just hacks off Bolas' head, calls the rest of them giant babies who can't solve their own problems and 'walks away.

Looks like some QoL stuff hit arena. Eye symbol on cards in hand that are revealed, bit easier to setup attacking a walker with a swarm.

Edit: lots of changes in deck builder too

So if you have 9 Gates out and then fire off Maze's End for the 10th do you win then or do you have to wait to put the Maze back down?

You win once Maze's End finishes resolving.

As of War of the Spark, WotC will no longer have an MSRP on MTG products.

This feels like one of those things players will love but stores (especially the smaller FLGSs that can't buy in bulk) will hate.

The Magic social media accounts also erroneously referred to this weekend's Mythic Championship as an invitational so people have been raking them over the coals particularly hard this morning.

what are the actual ramifications of this? will the wholesale price change or something?

Been having a lot of fun with Esper midrange on Bo1. It feels like it trades not having too many great matchups for also not have too many bad ones. It laughs off most aggro strategies, but man does Mono U just eat my lunch.

How do they always have the right protection/counter up? And they are always on the play. And they always have 2 Curious Obsessions on T2.

There's an easy way to guarantee Mono-U never has the right protection spells and only draws Curious Obsessions when their creatures can be blocked or are dead: play it yourself.

If the MSRP goes away how will Target and Walmart know how to price it? Like, literally, don't they just follow MSRP on weird shit?

Presumably whoever is in charge of these things will have information on what the product cost them and how much they'd like to make by selling it, mitigated by competitors' prices and other factors.

No MSRP means that instead of players being upset at stores for products priced above MSRP due to demand or expecting normal product to be sold below MSRP, they just sort of won't know if the price is reasonable except compared to their own experiences. This is technically Less knowledge to the consumers, but MSRP was so often inaccurate that it's basically just less useless knowledge.

I get MtG market research surveys every now and then and at the end of every survey I make sure to strongly voice my displeasure at hobby stores selling supplemental product at extreme markup even on launch day

Of all the ways to avoid negative press, I feel like Wizards no longer giving out info that seemed to do absolutely nothing but create a bunch of arbitrary negative press from a certain segment of enfranchised players is pretty benign IMO.

The biggest issue is Wizards manufactured their product for years with never a way to buy it directly from them at MSRP. I'd never really thought about it until now, but that's pretty sketchy isn't it?

  • Options
    XeddicusXeddicus Registered User regular
Eh, most things aren't bought direct. Most are MSRP, I guess, but you've never been able to count 100% on that either.

Most things are direct bought either by the retailer or the customer. I'm trying to think of another mass-marketed product that has to go through a distributor and drawing a blank. I think maybe gasoline? Jewelry?

FFG has a store on their website and you can buy any product they have in stock at MSRP. I've also bought clothes direct from the manufacturer if I found my size or the color(s) I wanted weren't on regular vendor sites. I dunno, it just seems like it's intentionally avoiding transparency and that kind of squicks me out a bit.

    Abolish the secondary market

Can you imagine how much money they’d have made if for example you could just go buy a box of ultimate masters for msrp, but no they do nothing to stop predatory pricing, cause hey if you don’t want to pay fifty dollars for a teferi just go buy a four dollar lottery ticket of dominaria

this is the rare something I actually get kind of het up about

gasoline can ostensibly be bought on futures markets

diamonds though, diamonds are almost a monopoly held by the debeers family that requires you go through one of their preferred distributors

    also, guns too

Not exactly a "consumer good" but a lot of groceries are sold to markets by distributors.
