Rooting hard for a SMB2 style.

Want Paper Mario more than anything but not sure the chances of that are quite as good.

Super Paper Mario style, with the ability to switch from X/Y perspective to Z/Y perspective.

SMB2 is known as SMB2 US over there for well-known reasons. I bet we get Donkey Kong (arcade) style first, if ever.

SMB 2 left its own mark on the series like with Birdo and shy guys becoming recurring element. Its not reviled or anything like that.

It has its own unique gameplay mechanics that could switch things up in MM that would make it worthy of being a DLC project of its own.

SMB2 as a standalone DLC set is very possible, it's clear that they set up that section to allow for adding more of them and that one is the most obvious choice. In fact I don't even know what else they would do, I don't see Super Mario Land happening. It's not impossible that they could bring in other franchises.

If they really want to go nuts, I can see a 2D Odyssey mode. Basically just make it like 3D World, but with the ability to possess enemies. Include some little hats the level creator can put on enemies to make them immune to capture.

Some people have suggested Galaxy and Odyssey style could be a thing.

Because it was made for US audiences.

Like that's all. They were already prototyping a lot of that for 3 anyway.

I did forget that SMB2 was actually the first Mario game on the GBA, a form people over there would've actually played it in. Plus in all-stars though not sure how much impact that had. So I'll bet that if SMB2 happens it will be with more SNES style graphics, which would make a second awesome looking style to pick from.

Honestly, I just think a reskin only Paper Mario Style, where the mechanics don't change from the base, but every character is a paper cutout etc. would be really fun. I don't even need the shifting perspectives.

I pray that by the time I finally get a switch for this, yall are still making levels.

I still play the original fairly regularly. Because I don't have a switch yet.

Are there any good resources for finding good levels in the original Mario Maker? Just googling "best Mario Maker levels" is mostly turning up; a) "clever" levels that are more about showing off the creators building skills than actually being fun for the player (masturbatory levels, basically); b) puzzle levels (cool, but not at all why I'm playing Mario); and c) super hard levels that are basically "fuck you" levels.

Yeah, I never played the original but some people seem to make an awful lot of stuff just to be clever or rage inducing.

Thats the stuff I want to avoid. Particularly the latter.

I never played the first one, so here’s a dumb question:

What is the “blank slate” like? Just a huge grid? I’m asking cuz I might like doing some planning on paper before actual construction.

Did someone ever make, like, a floorplanner kind of thing for web browser etc?

Yeah, it's a blank grid. Or, rather, two separate blank grids connected by pipes, if need be. I forget the maximum dimensions.

That would just be a recreation of the game itself. It really is very intuitive to just hop in and build, mass delete, etc.

And with the Switch being portable, anything else is just duplicating your efforts.

The blank slate is Mario on a nondescript line of ground tiles on the left side of the stage, and the flagpole on the right side, separated by a pit.

I do wonder why they decided to nuke your level if you try to switch over to 3D World? Seems like they could have saved all the compatible stuff, which would at least save the general level design, and delete the incompatible stuff. Maybe give you a warning and an opportunity to save a duplicate of your level before you convert it to 3D World.

I like designing the level first, then choosing the aesthetic. I also like swapping themes, it's part of the fun. Oh well.

Can we talk about how the night theme turns the 1-up mushroom into a poison mushroom that chases you? They went and made an official version of the green demon challenge.

I really hope that the night features are optional. They're neat, but sometimes I just like to play a level that's set at night, I don't need were-Goombas or anything there every time.

On another note, how nice would it be if you could still download and play SMM1 levels in SMM2? Probably something that will make that unfeasible, perhaps with a debate of whether it was worth it...

My first goal will be to make some multiplayer Overcooked levels. Players in different rooms, dropping stuff on moving platforms to get them to each other, constructing POW towers to get to item dispensers, hitting ON/OFF switches to switch conveyor directions, etc.

I've been thinking of doing an escort type map. Below where Mario spawns is a Super Mushroom that you need to get to the end of the level so that you can grab it, take damage, and then use your invincibility frames to get to the flag.

In order to get the Super Mushroom to the end you have to be proficient in the platforming of the upper level while keeping an eye on the lower level and hitting switches/using cranes/whatever else is needed to make sure you have the Mushroom at the end.

Didn't an update change the way the unlocks worked in the first game? I remember it being much less cumbersome.

Theoretically, it would make sense if you unlocked them by working through the single-player.

That's if they decide to make you unlock things again.

When I saw the trailer for the first game, I wondered if they would let you build levels that required changing game styles mid-level. Say, one part needs a wall-jump, but another part requires Yoshi, and yet another part needs a Tanooki suit. So you have to experiment with the styles and associated tools to puzzle through the level.

Not at all the game they’re building, but still an idea that I’d love to see Nintendo play with.

I hope you can have a day theme in one part of the course, and night in another. I want to have an night "underground" theme above a day ground theme to have some sort of topsy-turvy thing going.

If there is a chance we'll get another theme, I really hope it's Super Mario Land 2. That game had some of the best and kooky things going on with it.

Don't really have any interest in a SMB2 theme like many are wanting.

I just think SMB2's too mechanically different from every other game in Maker to make sense as another theme. If anything, I expect more 3D Mario styles to be brought into 2D Mario, like Sunshine and 64.

Well, Mario 2 is definitely very mechanically different, and would require a good number of unique assets, like diggable sand, Shy Guys, Phantos, and turnips.

On the other hand, the special theme we currently have (3D World) does go all in on being different enough that there's no carry-over if you were building something in one of the original 4 themes. So I think something as wholly different as Mario 2 isn't out of the question.

Personally, if I were picking a second special theme, I'd go for Galaxy. Altered gravity would be a cool stage gimmick to work with.
