I'd say The Dreaming I, by Akhlys. It's one of Nas Alacameth's side projects, but I'd say it's been better than any of the recent Nightbringer releases.
The Dreaming I is great, and I'd even go so far as to say it was better than anything by Nightbringer.
But you DEFINITELY need to listen to Aoratos if you have not already! Same guy, totally terrifying and awesome, my fave of his projects yet.
What inspired you to go back and listen to an album from 28 years ago that you never really enjoyed?
I occasionally go back through popular albums that I never really got the hype about, especially those that I just had a lukewarm reaction to but seem to be considered classics, then I put them in context and listen with fresh ears. Doesn't always work.
Blessed Are the Sick is one of the 'overrated 1991' albums that had the misfortune to follow on the heels of a masterpiece. I've never disliked it that much, I appreciated how they were exploring the terrain a little, but it didn't suck me in.
My list for the decade is mostly "arguably" metal (to some). In order of listened to the most:
1. Kvelertak - Kvelertak
2. Kvelertak - Meir
3. Kvelertak - Nattesferd
4. Ghost - Infestissumam
5. Ghost - Opus Eponymous
6. Ghost - Meliora
7. Baby Metal - Baby Metal
8. Baby Metal - Metal Resistance
9. King Gizzard - Infest the Rats' Nest
10. Voivod - The Wake
*11. Electric Wizard - Black Masses
Jerry from Rauta Reviews did an awesome interview with Zemial, and since Proscriptor is currently performing with Zemial, you get some Absu lore too Also nice Mongrel's Cross t-shirt, bud. Dmitrios is an awesome guy.
I don't know if I could pick an album of the decade to be honest.
In other news, the original singer (Dimitri) and guitarist (Ben) of dillinger escape plan have started a new band and it sounds a lot like early DEP. They've not got a name yet but apparently have written two songs and posted a teaser on their Facebook page.
So if you were a fan back in the day it's good news to start off the year!
I managed to grab my Saturday ticket for Death Over Worcester, so I'm booked for some Maggot Stomping caveman death metal. Possibly already sold out that day.
I'll hope to catch Satan this time, I couldn't make it to the last tour.
So it's January 1st and I've already got over 30 albums for 2020 in the promo box...Metal Never Sleeps. I'll get back into the reviews this week covering the popular Swedish band everybody loves to hate, or hates to love. I will be doing a discography per month (except those I take off), plus some reviews for new stuff.
The new Lurker of Chalice...is...really goddamn weird. And not always in a bad way.
Baroness- Blue Record just barely misses the cutoff as an October 2009 release, but that album found me at a very weird time in my life and I credit it with getting me "back into" heavy metal after more or less completely ignoring the genre for like 10 years. As for albums that actually came out in the 2010s, the one I listened to the most is probably Slugdge- Esoteric Malacology. Admittedly, goofy not-quite-novelty death metal is not typically my subgenre of choice, but I just love it so much.
Been really enjoying this Grima, Russian atmospheric black metal, for frigid wintertime listening:

There was a time in my life where My Dying Bride was my favorite band. I don't dislike them now, but I got kind of bored with them around the time they released The Light at the End of the World in 1999. I bought a few of their releases after that, but nothing ever hooked me. I did like the first song off their most recent album, Feel the Misery, but that was about it.
I've always had a love/hate relationship with them, but they have some pretty good stuff. This new song is classy.
Ironically I actually enjoy The Light at the End of the World!
I've always had a love/meh relationship with them. A lot of their stuff doesn't grab me, but the stuff that does really does. For example, the bridge in the middle of "A Kiss to Remember" is one of my favorite pieces of music ever.

I actually do like The Light at the End of the World, but it felt like such an overcorrection to me after the divisive 34.788%...Complete. And perhaps I was just tired of that particular sound. For me, I don't think they'll ever top Turn Loose the Swans, mainly because I got that album at just the right time in my life. But I'm glad they're still out there making music.
And another from last year which is quite good, interesting style here with some progressive rock and stoner influence. I had posted about their prior album Ramble Beyond some years ago.
Another album I missed last year, but is getting a broader release soon. No surprise as this is the same guy who is behind Musmahhu, Gardghastr, both of which were some of my faves of 2019, but he's also in a dozen other bands.
Just straightforward, evil, atmospheric black metal, love it. Might swap it onto my Backup Metal list for 2019 on RYM.
Ghost discography is nearly finished, what other popular metal band discography should I topple next month? I'm doing Opeth at some point this year, and had thought to do Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Sabaton, stuff like that, but now I'm thinking why limit myself to Swedish bands?

How about Helloween? Some interesting quality shifts throughout, some weird albums in the middle. Way too many compilations, though, so I'd say give yourself a break and don't do all of those. I'd be interested in seeing Cathedral or Candlemass as well.

These are all great suggestions, I've only reviewed a couple albums by each in the past! I am a huge Helloween fan across multiple eras so that might be way past due.
Maybe Immortal? Windir and Type O Negative would be cool too. Also Incantation and Blut Aus Nord.
My only fear with Immolation and Incantation is I might get a little bored somewhere in the middle. I know they do have some variation and evolution between albums but sometimes its very gradual. Still, I'm a fan of both.

As long as you don't start warming up to Illud Divinum...

When I see that logo I just can't help but to think of Stryper.
This album is much better than their first one, Bestial Fukkin' Hellmachine or whatever it was called.

Switching gears completely, here's a new Night Flight Orchestra song. Sounds like a Night Flight Orchestra song:

It almost obscene how much talent is in that vid and on that track.

The others are all great ideas.
Candlemass could be interesting just with all the lineup changes.
Some of the less popular thrash bands might be fun, Exodus, Ovekill, Testament.
I have done complete runs for Overkill and Testament, Exodus could be cool as I've only done a handful of theirs!
You misspelled Senmuth.
Edit: Though thinking of Russian artists, Arkona might be a cool one to go over.
Merzbow has a few releases that fall into the metal adjacent area. That might be an artist to go over.
