Why am I suddenly imagining Columbus police officers having a competition to see how many protestors they can hit in the face not unlike Legolas and Gimli in LOTR?

Columbus police are horrendous. The first things they did on Saturday were show up in full riot gear to people peacefully standing on the sidewalks, pull someone into the streets and mace them.

Asheville native Maria Norris said protesters started out downtown with police by their sides, peacefully escorting marchers through downtown and eventually onto the Bowen Bridge.

“We started out very peacefully, we marched… we all stayed peaceful," Norris said. “They took a knee with us, one of the officers shook my hand and they gave me a bottle of water."

But once protesters made it onto the bridge, Norris said, "we were met with tear gas and force from the Asheville Police Department. They waited, they worked with us as long as we were at the courthouse. When we stayed in the middle of town everything was fine.

“When we got to the bridge, when we got away from the tourism and the money and the hoity toity rich people that run this city they gassed us. They closed us off on the bridge and they gassed us," she said.

Gotta say as a person whose nearest major city is Columbus, Georgia I wish we were more original in naming cities.

Speaking of the smaller Columbus though, we had a small march through downtown yesterday that stayed peaceful. A couple hours later a dozen or so folks were arrested when they tried to block traffic on the main intersection. Need bigger numbers if you want to do that folks.

it's very important to not put basically any stock in the scattered reports of police marching alongside protests and dropping off cases of bottled water and shit. something similar happened in atlanta where the chief spent some time talking to protesters and everyone was all hopeful, and then she left and the cops teargassed and shot people. we probably shouldn't be getting too hopeful about the cities where things haven't gotten violent yet either. all it takes is for one cop to decide to start some shit for crowds to react and i think it'll be very difficult for the police to not go back to the old ways. i hope i'm wrong on this, but we'll see

whether this all is a result of individual cops being intentionally duplicitous or the rank and file not listening to leadership or warring factions within departments doesn't matter. we cannot trust the police. they've decided we're the enemy and you don't do nice things for your enemy

It's going to be real wild in a few days when we start getting the first cases of mass covid transmission among both protestors and police ('cause you know the cops totally aren't socially distancing inbetween riot assaults.)

It really says a lot about the human psyche how we treat an invisible threat that does thirty five 9/11s worth of death compared to one that has resulted in the death of a handful of protestors and an Autozone being set on fire.

It's says even more damning things about how police treat the "threat" of a black man who bounced a check.

Charities realized if they wanted to get more money for starving children in Africa, like this in my fatherland, they had to only put one child in a frame at a time. That if you put multiple children in a frame, people would start to tune out the number of people suffering.

    1 starving African baby, human.

3 starving African babies, faceless mass.

How 9.11 still seemed human, I do not know.

Whole lot of property was destroyed

This was unfair of me. I think the real reason is it was someone else killing Americans, as opposed to Americans doing it to each other.

no i think you weren't far off the mark there. if an equal number of people had been killed in separate attacks all over the country on the same day in ways that didn't involve blowing up one of the main symbols of american economic power i doubt we would've collectively lost our minds to the extent we did. that probably has more to do with the symbolism specifically, but the property damage itself is an important part of it i think

I mean, look at school shootings. Those are children dying. Or mass shootings in general.

I've been mocked before for saying this, but I don't think it has been an accident that so many Blue states have been vocally discussing their sovereignty in the last couple of months. It's been obvious for awhile, but the Trump Administration (with full GOP support) has gutted much of the ability of the federal government to perform its function via purges - direct and via making the internal cultures so toxic - and that being tied to the fed's control is becoming a danger to their citizens.

Now, we are seeing what the conservatives plan is for replacing the "administrative state." We are getting rid of all the helpers and public servants and replacing them with angry men with guns. You don't have to care about the citizens' welfare and consent if you think a boot on the neck is enough, and it is far cheaper to equip a well-armed militia in blue than it is to run a modern nation state. So, lower taxes for the wealthy!

None of this would have worked. But we are seeing a glimpse of the end-game for the national conservative movement.

I'm not surprised they would put the President in a safe room, it's why those rooms exist after all.

It's the combination of that with him tweeting things like how if any protesters were to get on the grounds they would be attacked by dogs and shot that really just makes him look pathetic.

He's the guy talking shit to somebody while hiding behind their much larger friend. Just shut the fuck up and go hide in your bunker.

Also it’s a powerful political message: protesters are so violent we had to hide.

As long as the protesters are believed (by the white masses) to be the real violent side then the police can mass murder all they want, they are still the good guys fighting “the horde”. The MSM, theoolice, conservatives etc. are leaning hard into this narrative. And itsworking

    i don't think that's how it reads

there's the people that'll be behind the president no matter what, but for a lot of people the combination of talking a big game on twitter while demonstrably being a coward is not a good look

e: then again i'm a communist posting on a videogame webcomic forum about radical politics, so maybe i don't have any useful perspective on this

There are other videos claiming that the car was damaged by rioters first and what is being seen is the police removing the broken windows and windshield to make the cruiser drive-able. This is just a friendly reminder to remember double check things even if what is shown is something you want to see.

If anyone has evidence of cop's agitating protests to riot or cop's purposely causing property damage please post it. I have been searching for some evidence to show my father as we talk about current events.

Rather than individual cops being duplicitous, it seems like a general police strategy to get those Good Cop photo ops to feed the press while they brutalize the protestors later, and lead the protesters away from capital before starting the beatings so they can't break windows in the masters' property.
