The husband and I went fishing this morning. It's the first time I've ever fished. We didn't catch anything, but I had a lot of fun. I want to do it again soon.
I'm hooked.

We went down to a dock near the salmon hatchery. There were quite a few people there and it was super windy. We had to sort of take the crappy part of the dock, where it was impossible to cast out very deep because of the wind. But the husband showed me how to cast and I got some good practice in. I watched some eagles fight for a fish carcass, which was amazing. And terrifying when they started dragging the carcass over to me.

@Jacobkosh I think I have Conan because it was free on Epic. You'd recommend?
@Evil Multifarious I would, although not to everyone. The bullet points are
- A genuinely huge play area with a lot of geographic diversity. You start off in a very like, black deserts of Kemet kind of vibe, then move to an idyllic Nile-like river, which you can follow east to a full-on jungle and a vast lake, or you can head north through a more...rocky, Israel/Jordan-like desert of canyons and mesas that give way to veldt and then to temperate forests and then to boreal forests and fjords and Scandinavian-style mountains. And it's all dotted with dungeons and tombs and pyramids and etc etc - and unlike a lot of open-world games, you actually have compelling reasons to travel and explore, because different regions have different shit in different quantities, and certain rare items and materials can only be found in scary tombs and whatnot. it doesn't have that..."well, I could go there, but why?" anomie that afflicts me in some other games. I actually want to see what lies over the next hill.
- Related to this, there's also some narrative content. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a story, but it's not just some tabula rasa. There's an actual objective to the game (learn the secrets of the ancient builders so you can break your magical slave collar and escape) which helps me feel more engaged and less aimless. There's also a lot of lore and worldbuilding to discover, and actual NPCs to talk to and interact with (not as deeply as an RPG, but many have more to say than just a generic bark, which was a pleasant surprise). This is one of these things that might be meaningless to someone else but is invaluable to me; I like an element of narrative glue to fix me into a setting. There are fun mysteries and story strands to pick up and that gives me a reason to engage with the game systems.
- Of course, that wouldn't matter if I didn't enjoy the game systems, but I do! Resource gathering is fast and painless, and the crafting options are varied and involve a bit of cruft and figuring-shit-out but, crucially, not too much. By way of comparison, I found ARK overwhelming. This is pitched at a level of complexity I can get behind. The combat is also pretty good, with several different weapon types (one- and two-handed swords, shields, knives, spears, javelins, bows, clubs, hatchets, axes) that work differently and confer different advantages. Swords are great in personal combat but a spear really is a godsend when you're trying to keep a 15-foot-tall spider away from you. It's not going to win any awards, it's not lovingly hand-crafted like a character action game or whatever, but I'd say it's certainly more rewardingly tactile than, say, a traditional MMO.
- I sometimes find builders difficult to get into. My imagination doesn't always spark that way, and even when it does, I feel like the games are either too constricting or too free. Minecraft, for instance, is too open: one person makes a little village with farms and then their buddy is off to the side making a replica of the World Trade Center with a little flaming plane sticking out of it orr whatever. it's too much, it's too random and whimsical for me. Something like ARK or Rust, by contrast, is like - well, everything I make is going to look kind of Mad Max-y. Conan hits my Goldilicks spot where there are plenty of options (do I want a stepped pyramid, a Greek agora, an onion-domed pleasure dome, etc) but they're all pulling in the same thematic direction and it's easy for me to tap into that vibe. Does that make sense?
EDIT: also I need to give a shout out to the climbing mechanic, which I love. Instead of bunny hopping up 85-degree terrain or doing some kind of Prince of Persia minigame, you just..hit the jump button (spacebar) and your character adheres to a wall like Spider-Man, and you can begin climbing up it, or laterally, or even downward. But the instant you start climbing, your stamina begins to drop precipitously, so every climb is a race to get to the summit before you become too worn out to hang on. It's simple and dramatic. Also, if you jump or fall and are near a cliff or wall, you can whack the spacebar and your guy will grab the wall with his bare hands and skid downward to a stop. it's incredibly satisfying.

While I don't usually get angry at companies, I have been annoyed with them in the past. But today, a company actively upset me. Asmodee North America / Fantasy Flight Games is still catching up on their COVID delays. They had 3 releases scheduled for this week - Dr. Strange, An L5R pack, and the Arkham Horror GenCon 2019 scenario. I have been looking forward to these for months, and a year in the case of the AH pack.
But no. Despite the game store putting in their orders super early this week, nothing shipped. This is likely due to their rep quitting after 2 weeks, and not doing any work on their way out the door.
This is compounded on top of my not getting a novella I really wanted because ANA lost the special/pre-order stuff the store put in for it, and now it's on backorder.
Blah. I'm also bummed my special orders for Terraforming Mars didn't come in, but that's small potatoes.

A couple friends of mine have been really wanting to sink their teeth into a new builder game and also something co-op that can accommodate more than 4 people, so I pulled the trigger last night and rented a private Conan Exiles server.
I wasn't sure how this would go. I liked a lot of the game's individual elements the last time I played, but it was just a bit too janky and opaque in key spots to stick with.
It's a lot better now, and not having to worry about randoms is a real boon. We've got a cool settlement underway, and I find myself actually looking forward to what I'm going to make, even though survival builders aren't usually my thing. I think Conan's strong theming really helps with that.
I haven't played with randos on Exile, I just did my own thing. That's fun for only so long though. I can see it being great with a group of people. Especially the dungeons.
four or five of us went into a tomb last night and fought a giant crocodile that wrecked our shit until I noticed that there were a bunch of platforms and colums in the central chamber. we all climbed up high, our of its reach, and peppered the beast with arrows while our one guy with a spear kept it aggroed and from returning to its nest
it felt incredibly primal, like this team of howling monkeys bringing down an enraged antelope in the veldt
ah yeah I know exactly where you're talking about.
I climbed up on the entryway arch and exhausted all my arrows and my poison gas globes I found from a raid on a camp. but it didn't kill it.
so I cheated in more arrows and globes :hydra:
I was a little sad that there wasn't anything beyond the Crocs though.

In the last session I finally got to kick off my mech, the White Witch's, hyperactive mode that detonates its ferrofluid armor around it every time it gets hit with an attack. So I waded into a loose grouping of 4-5 enemies and then fired my magnetic cannon that lets me pull enemies hit by it towards me so they'd be within range of that. My variable armor was really high so I was able to ignore most of their attacks, but then they shivved me with their armor piercing knives made out of light and my mech was completely destroyed. But I ejected safely and we made it out of that encounter victorious!
I just realized that we both charged up our limited-use super moves in that fight and then failed to actually hit anyone* with them
*I got hacked and fired my multi-turn charged up armor shredding sextuple barreled lightning chest-cannon at an allied npc and this does not count
I think it counts! :P
I got to do a few low level bursts but yeah it would have been nice if I could have gotten the big one off where they take more armor piercing damage, but also knocked prone, immobilized and have all of their armor and damage resistances stripped off.

on that topic are there any cRPGs out that let me play as a Constantine style mage? I got an itch for that since I was binging a bunch of Hellblazer comics and reading through my Mage books.
