Gunnerkrigg... Court.
The comic Verdandi is referring to is called Oh My Goddess! which is a Japanese comic in which the main characters are loosely based on the Norns. Verdandi's name was translated to Belldandy in the English translations of the comic, which Kat has read, and realised who she was.
Basically, this was a long walk for a reference to a comic I enjoyed many years ago.

The 'patient in a coma grabbed a gun and shot himself' story won't be the best one the cops came up with, but by a weird coincidence all their bodycams were turned off, so what can you do?

Does the mafia even know or care enough about Mike that they would want to kill him?
Unknown.
Blaine claimed he could end Mike's life with a phone call to the mob who'd do anything for him, but Blaine's connection to reality was... tenuous.
But he was telling Corrupt Cop details thinking they were going to get him out of this mess (and they did, just not in the way he thought), and one of them might have been that the kid in a coma knew all about his money laundering stuff. If they know about that, they'd at least have a reason to make sure he doesn't tell anyone.

The only way the mafia would know about Mike is if Blaine admitted to them how he fucked up and a high schooler found out about their money laundering operation. And since they were already killing Blaine then destroying the evidence is easier and safer then killing Mike and hoping he didn't tell anyone or make copies of what he knew.
Again, it all depends on what a known delusional man told them, so it's all up in the air.
The one thing we can rely on is that nothing he told them about would have been his fault, obviously.
But if they do know, I can see them figuring they might as well try to wrap up a loose end. It'd be relatively low-risk to do right now (oh no he stopped breathing what a shame), and maybe he didn't makes copies or anything, who knows? If he did it doesn't matter, but unless you give a value on his life, that's no reason not to kill him just in case.

The fact that this is a real thing is mildly terrifying.
