Do you mean Higurashi When They Cry? I am not familiar with it either but I have heard some things about this new anime of it that people discovered with ep. 2
apparently this is not a straight remake of the original story but some kind of sequel, and it was marketed as a remake as a fake out
In broad half remembered haze of when I watched the first Higurashi anime years and years ago:
In the original I think I remember it eventually being revealed that all the characters are stuck in some freaky time-loop that at best most of the characters are subconsciously aware of, so it tracks.
higurashi gou is poised to be simultaneously a remake, reimagining, and continuation of the story, and i am keenly interested to see how it plays out
Is this a thread where I can talk about Umineko because I am playing it
Umineko Ep 2 ending
so I’m only familiar with the broad strokes of Higurashi but
Bernkastel is Rika and all of Higurashi was set up by Lambdadelta?
Do I have that right?
Also Jesus was that ending grim
There's a visual novel thread somewhere. Also, should probably tag that this involves Higurashi spoilers.
(I've never finished Higurashi, but I connected those dots pretty quick.)
Also, I hope you're using the original art or at least a mod for the PS3 sprites. I don't like the Steam ones at all, but the PS3 ones are nice.
I personally feel the Steam sprites have a lot more personality than the PS3 ones. (except the Kyrie sprite, that one is god awful)
Nitpick, and it's probably impossible to fix given how ubiquitous the titles are, but I wish they'd actually translate 'Higurashi' and 'Umineko' for the official releases, since the meanings are lost without translating them.
I get that "When The Cicadas Cry" isn't as catchy, but still.
Umineko on steam titles the game box "Umineko: When the Seagulls Cry" at the very least.
Higurashi I have a bit of leeway for since "When the Evening Cicadas Cry" is a bit of a mouthful.
Okay, so we know Beatrice only has power if people believe she does. And we now know, thanks to the flashback and a comment by Ronove, that Beatrice is (or was) human.
I’m wondering if this is a belief makes reality thing, where Beatrice was an ordinary human who lived and died. Then enough people came to believe in a witch named Beatrice that one was actually created.
Also, I do find it odd that we’ve barely heard anything about Kinzo’s wife. She must have had magic sensitivity, since we know sensitivity to magic is hereditary, that at least Eva and Rosa have it, and that Kinzo has none.
Do I need to have watched the first season of Higurashi for this new season to be worth watching? I know that second episode season two completely spoils some major things about season one, but I'm hoping that going forward it watchable enough for people not familiar with the first season (and all the other related shows, light novels, etc).
The creator said that it’ll be enjoyable for newcomers too. Sometimes that’s a lie (looking at you, Fate/Extra Last Encore), but through two episodes it seems perfectly enjoyable as long as you’re fine with a major plot element being revealed much earlier than it was in the original.
I have never heard a creator say "no, please avoid new product." They ALWAYS say this is a good jumping on point, even if it's a laughable lie.
I think Suda51's said things along those lines before, but he's crazy.
His games arguably make less sense if you played the originals first, because you'll be confused as to what they heck he's done to those characters.
(See: Juliet in Travis Strikes Again)

"These DVDs are not worth watching. Don't buy!" - Yoshiyuki Tomino, director of Victory Gundam, on the DVD release of Victory Gundam
"This is a series that I want to deny completely. Such a result was all my responsibility. If you watch this Blu-ray due to some kind of mistake, please find what went wrong with 'Mobile Suit V Gundam.' If there is anyone who can learn something from it, we will have a meaning to release it as Blu-ray." - Tomino, on the page promoting the release of the BluRays
Maybe it should be more clearly 'a creator still invested in the franchise' there. Since he's been badmouthing everything Gundam for years now, and probably doesn't make any money off of it or anything.

My comment was not originally an invitation for counter examples, but that is impressive. So now retroactively that's totally what I was after. Please more instances like that, that's pretty wild.
I haven't gotten to Victory in my UC watch yet, but from what I understand, it was around the lowest points of the depression Tomino had struggled with for a while. I believe Sunrise also forced a lot of changes to his original vision for the show, and I've heard anecdotally that he was dismayed by people taking some of the wrong messages from Gundam as a franchise, or ignoring the messages entirely, and some speculation that he intentionally tried to sink it so he wouldn't have to make shows to drive toy sales anymore, but I can't speak to the veracity of those things
They did stuff like putting episode 4~ first, then making 1-3 a flashback, because the Gundam doesn't show up until 4. And making him continuously debut new enemy mechs to sell models, yeah.
It's a great show if you want to see a lot of ridiculous stuff happen and get super depressed.

I mean, can't be that many years, since iirc five years or so ago Tomino was literally making a gundam series, G-Reco?

the creator says no, and i want to trust him on that one, but like none of us know enough to make a judgment call right now on how newcomer friendly it'll really be— personally i'd say wait for a few more episodes and ask again?
for me, i found a big part of the original was the slow burn of it all, and trying to make sense of all the little mysteries that bubble up as the overarching plot stews in the background, before everything finally comes together— in the new anime, things are accelerated as a big structural element is immediately brought to the forefront, but they say they have reasons for doing so
i do want people to watch the new anime, so far it's very good, it's clear the people behind it really get higurashi and seem to know what they're doing, even if we don't exactly know where they're going with it yet
but also the sound novel is already out in full and is one of the best pieces of media i've encountered, you can even watch the whole thing on youtube, i recommend getting the original higurashi experience and then going to see what the deal is with the new anime

I haven't watched it yet but GGP speaks quite highly of Victory Gundam.
I ended up thinking Victory is pretty all right. I like it a hell of a lot more than Zeta, at least. But ultimately it’s still a Tomino show, with all the pros and cons that come along with that. I personally cannot stand his style, so most of the “main” UC is kinda insufferable to me, even if I appreciate what Tomino is trying to do.

Following up on this, the deal as I remember it, but I don’t have anything handy to cite right now:
Victory was a bit of a clusterfuck for the production. Anecdotally it comes as Tomino’s depression is apparently at one of its hardest hitting points and was the series being produced when Bandai, who had formerly just been a sponsor for Sunrise’s productions, was in the process of buying the studio outright (which is the status quo to this day for Sunrise). I can’t speak to how much meddling they had in the plot, but Victory’s episode order for airing was a deliberate change by Bandai as the Victory Gundam itself doesn’t actually show up until episode four of the production order; thus, they demanded episode four be aired first and the staff to compensate around that for the preceding three.
As you can imagine, these issues are some of Tomino’s biggest gripes with production, as someone who has always kind of had contempt for the “We have to sell toys” side of the franchise’s production. As well, it also features Gundam at some of it’s bleakest and bluntest depictions of the horrors of war, while not being as, perhaps, as bleak as Ideon
I keep trying to edit the old post but OCD is screwing with my head to the point I keep deleting whatever I write there so... I’ll type it here where a draft can save at least
So I think part of the issue with Tomino is maybe this kind of... frustration with how cruel he could be with characters’ fates and how the fandom tends to misinterpret what he’s trying to say with it. The one that immediately comes to mind in that regard being Quess in CCA, where the fandom tends to absolutely hate Quess, whereas Tomino’s intent is to make her a character whose death is meant to be tragic, which gets lost because, well, the fans hate her.
Quess’ whole arc is that she’s a young woman who is ignored by her father, understands that the earth sphere is just absolutely on the brink socially and ecologically, but has no idea how to handle this, while being easily swept up in war hero narratives and her empathic connections as a newtype. So she ends up ping ponging from Amuro to Char, and becoming yet another newtype co-opted into another war machine, and gets killed because of it.
Having just listened to the Great Gundam Project’s CCA episode, they compare her to Four a lot but I think the closer read is that Tomino is using her as a new version of Katz, who has a very similar arc, but is influenced by knowing Amuro directly during their time in the One Year War, and dies in a similar tragic, pointless manner.
Compare that then with Gundam Evolve 5, where Tomino is given the chance to write a story for the Nu Gundam to promote some kit release and... instead of really being about Amuro or the Nu, its entirely about saving Quess, by giving her the mentorship she needs to avoid the mistakes that get her killed in CCA
It ties in with a lot of Tomino’s thoughts on who gundam is meant for; during the lead up to G Reco, he explained that he was making a show for the youth of today (well, of a few years ago now) instead of a UC series for fans who grew up with the UC. For Tomino, Gundam is a series that seems meant as a conversation with the new generation about the mistakes of the previous generations, and how to hopefully avoid those mistakes going forward. I haven’t seen Victory yet, but I could see it as possible that might be one of the reasons why he was frustrated with it if he wasn’t able to communicate that theme.
It ties in well with a line he used both in Zeta and G Reco in one way or another: The Old Generation cannot build new eras. It is up for the next generations to do so, and so often they are harmed by the old generation’s stubbornness and refusal to acknowledge their mistakes.
uh
tomino isn't like uninvolved with gundam anymore, he's halfway through a g-reco film pentalogy
It sounded weird to me when that was said, yeah, but I didn't know if he, like, split with Bandai angrily last year or something so I didn't want to say anything.
But yeah, as I've remarked before, there are two things that will feature in almost everything Tomino does:
- War really sucks
- Shut the fuck up, evil old people
There are often additional themes, but those two things are almost always baseline. And in a way, even if Tomino is sometimes a weirdo that writes space alien dialogue, it's kind of nice that he's kept that going even when he's an old peoples now!
