If you say that the story is just a fluffy and cute relationship between the two with a quirky supporting cast and the occasional fanservice thrown in there I would agree with you that it's not a particularly interesting setup and you won't miss out on anything for not checking it out

I can't say that the older stuff aged well but you can try immediately skipping to the first major arc (episode 58~61) or watch the movie version "Gintama: A New Retelling Benizakura Arc"(Better animation, more condensed) and get a feel of whether you like the characters or story telling enough to watch more of it. That covers the serious portion of the manga. For the comedy part try searching "Gintama funny scenes" on youtube and see if the humor is for you. Other than that I think it's fine to not watch all the episodes, you can always go back to them if you can't get enough of it someday
Anjou-san is better than Uzaki-chan. She even has an actually decent reason for why she started hanging out with the loner outcast main guy.

First impressions and thoughts on the the first two episodes of Princess Nine, Gurren Lagann, and Erased (three shows I have never watched & knew nothing about) that we watched tonight.

-- This show is fantastic. Love me the anime version of A League of Their Own, including anime drunk Tom Hanks.
-- The music on this show is amazing.
-- This show's a real trip back to the 90's via the dubbing.

-- This is a PSX JRPG about a Nu-Metal band.
-- This show is clearly the most problematic of the three shows we watched. Holy shit the male-gaze in this is bad, as is the character of Leeron Littner.

That's not true at all. They added in recaps where the fanservice material goes in the DVD episode. TV stations aired the episode.
