So I guess Facebook went ahead and banned all Australian media from their website. This is wild. And there is so much collateral damage. Because the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is categorised under news, people who use normally lose Facebook to check for fires and floods are suddenly losing that feed. This has the potential to cause genuine harm to people. Yeah, it's true that you can still get updates on stuff like this from Twitter, websites and apps, but it feels really reckless and gross that Facebook could suddenly strip their site of potentially life saving information because of a proposed media law.

It’s actually incredible how badly this blew up in their faces, and it’s even MORE incredible that it was self-inflicted. The ineptitude is on full display here.
I’m not sure where I sat on the proposed law anyway, but this was a pretty clear signal that no one knows what they’re doing and that something that’s ubiquitous to daily life is being run by a bunch of folks that have an over-inflated sense of their own skills.

Like as happy as I am that Twitter banned Trump, this is (kind of) the flipside. Social media giants do not and probably will not ever have the ability to effectively manage the content on their sites. They just don’t.
Full credit for coming up with unique concepts that have now become so essential to the way so many folks live, but 0 marks for adapting or displaying any kind of accountability for how said concepts have evolved.
Personally I see this is an absolute win: if people can't have news articles forwarded and liked on Facebook, then that's gonna put a real dent in how quickly Murdoch-media BS spreads around.
Honestly, Facebook just not being a news service is the best outcome possible, I think.
I don’t disagree with this. But there are lots of statements being made by pundits that now that legitimate news sources are gone, misinformation from unofficial sources will now spread like wildfire. I don’t think this is an accurate statement in and of itself, but there are plenty of pages that post things that look like news but are actually just clickbait bullshit. And while that sort of thing should also be eliminated, FB has effectively proven, via its actions today, that its algorithms are completely busted.
The removal of a raft of emergency services and pages has been noticed and is not okay, and while it’s been fixed, the mistake was still made on a very large scale. Heaps of random community pages also got removed while others were left untouched, in a seemingly arbitrary fashion. In WA there’s an election soon and a LNP candidate’s page got removed while our incumbent Labor premier’s stayed up. And you know, fuck the LNP, but at the same time it’s this kind of thing that shows how inept FB is at even making their own dang point.
Google and Facebook don't need anyone to defend them or fight their battles for them, we are in clear "Let them fight" territory. That said, the code seems like complete horseshit. Nigh tech-illiterate rubbish that is custom designed to further prop up daddy Murdoch's empire. The concept of paying for links is nuts.
Meanwhile in vile shit that makes me want to vomit:

New information from the victim reveals the PMs office knew about it days after it happened, despite the PM saying they didn’t know until she came forward.
It was obvious he was going to lie his ass off, so I wonder if she kept that message exchange to herself to see if he’d act in good faith.
Of course, being ScoMo, he did not. I wonder how he will try to bullshit his way out of this one.
Damn. Caught in a lie. Watch the contortions begin.

It's strange, but in a week I am going home to New Zealand and so this is - at worst - a temporary issue for me. I didn't realize that how much I had curated facebook to show me world news until today.
But at least my facebook is still a non-stop tidal wave of cats. So it's not all lost.

It's interesting because it's still the same amount of cats, but I can tell the algorithm is thrashing around trying random shit to see what it can now get me to engage with. Still downvoting them all and just liking things with cats. Eventually it will be all cats again.
At this point I don't even know how to convey the level of disgust and white hot rage I have for our government and the current situation.
Is this an Australia thing (in which case I can guess what it's about), or a New Zealand thing (in which case I have no idea).
The trans Tasman ratio is actually quite even (if not moreso NZ based) at the best of times. I blame @lonelyahava for that.

Yeah increasing the MIQ payments for migrants/temporary visa workers from 25th of March is really cruel. I am in isolation now and it's an interesting experience, but thankfully I don't need to pay to do this as I am a returning citizen. Being slugged nearly $6k would be immensely hard.
I mean, Collins is not exactly unknown for cynically exploiting the issue of the day. On the other hand, I would love for the government to take up that offer - simply because it seems entirely fair to me - if the government requested you to self-isolate, it seems reasonable that they at least cover the loss to you of doing so, neatly resolving the problem faced by people who can't afford to not have their earnings.

This makes a certain amount of sense for location-bound work, but I'm not sure why the government should pay 100% of my salary when I'm fully capable of doing my job from inside isolation.
(I mean, apart from the fact that the government pays 100% of my salary for my labour anyway as a public servant).
At this point I don't even know how to convey the level of disgust and white hot rage I have for our government and the current situation.
Albanese got a really good hit in, pointing out Morrison said in May 2019 that Rape victims need to be believed to encourage them to speak, but upon being handed the documentation about the case from 1988 he admitted he didn’t read it and immediately believed the minister.
Of course, being Labor and Albanese, they’ll do jack shit with it.

I am lucky in that my job as a game developer means I can just work in the hotel. This isn't as easy for my partner, who is a nurse and needs to be outside the hotel to find a job. So currently has no income.
How's it going? And where are you settling when you get out? If you don't mind. Anything we can get for you?
I am doing really well now to be honest. It was a mixture, because I had no real idea what to expect going into the Quarantine but it was actually initially really lovely. Everyone was very understanding, patient and kind, with the hotel staff being amazing. You can get assistance from the hotel or a nurse 24/7, but there are some caveats. I got severe food poisoning on the first night, which gave me an incredibly long and unpleasant period of non-stop vomiting (and worse). I couldn't get medication until the morning, so when you have an emergency or problem, there isn't any help coming until things open the next day. Once they did though, someone from the hotel - I think the airforce actually - went and collected my medication to solve that right quick, but the experience wiped me out for several days.
This did result in me getting nearly 2 extra covid swabs though, despite the fact it was very clearly food poisoning - which I suspect was from the food option I ate compared with my partner (who was fine). At the same time, it also could have come from something I ate before leaving Australia and so I can't definitively prove it came from the hotel. This has made both me and my partner gunshy about the food a little bit, but we're starting to find some of the meals are utterly delicious and some are just baffling. At the same time, we're well looked after and we were able to get a grocery order sent to the room - so we have snacks, sandwiches and other options should we need/want something more. They're really accommodating about having food delivered to - you can order your own pizza, stuff from menulog and such forth. I'm a little baffled why people complain about the food options, because they don't stop you ordering your own and some of the meals have been legitimately great.
At the same time, I've just sat in bed, watched TV/netflix, played games, done some work (now I am better) and they provide plenty of free wifi etc. My fractured rib* (yes, I had a fractured rib before getting into the hotel from previous shenanigans) has had time to heal and not having to move lots of bags full of heavy nonsense is absolutely fabulous. Plus they delivered us some Sudoku and crossword puzzles today, which was nice. Everything gets delivered to our rooms and while we don't go out much, it's pretty comfortable. It's not fair or correct for people to compare this to prison or similar, because the hotel I am at tries their best to get you anything you need and accommodate deliveries etc.
Plus I have a nice view. I'm obviously looking forward to being able to leave, but I'm not particularly rushing and it's good to take some time to heal. Especially after how mentally brutal and exhausting it was to leave Australia, as we did not know my partner needed exemptions both to leave and enter New Zealand. This was due to the Australian government banning all its citizens from leaving the country for non-essential purposes about 3 weeks ago, without telling us any of this information. As a result, my partner very nearly couldn't leave to come with me and I would have not gone either, leaving us both stuck in Australia (as we would have lost our MIQ slots for certain). It was an extremely difficult day, but we thankfully got through it and the relief I had sitting on that plane was indescribable.
And thank you for asking if there was anything you could get for me, but nobody except for essential deliveries (menulog/countdown etc) are allowed to come near the hotel due to the level 3 lockdown
*Food poisoning vomiting + Fractured Rib is not an experience I would wish on anyone.
Christian Porter not stepping aside because otherwise anyone who has allegations leveled against them which aren't addressed satisfactorily in a court of law could have their lives ruined.
Which is just, yeah, that's how it should work.

Well that backfired on Porter.
He went and did his teary speech about how he didn't rape that girl, and dragged her family into it apologizing to them for her death being politicized by other people.
Her family came out today and said they want an inquiry.
everyone I know was so angry after his fucking kavanaugh-inspired cryfest (I couldn't stand to watch it).
Hope that plus Scotty's handling of the whole situation has some kind of electoral impact, though I'm not holding my breath.

It if also kills Facebook, so be it.
Basically I hate everyone involved a lot.
I had a fairly decent, reasonably minded feed but it’s nice to see a drop in doom porn and people venting frustration by sharing horrible articles.
I would delete my work profile if I didn’t need it for work, and I would delete my personal one if I had a way to get my fix of friends’ baby pics

What about porn featuring everyone's favorite Latverian dictator.
Heh. I said dictator.

And I assume SPI is talking about the tragic development in the 1980s parliamentary rape story.
I guess my surprise was more my American brain still trying to translate not having an opposition party that is pure evil.
It gives me whiplash at times remembering that National aren't the GOP.
Edit: like it totally makes sense and is a good policy. I just was surprised who it came from.
