Re: old games. Some of my best gaming nostalgia memories are going to the store and picking up Red Ant rereleases. They'd buy the rights to old classic games, and publish them on DVD for $10.

Nowadays if I want to buy a cheap old game I have to wait for it to be on sale like everything else.

    https://kotaku.com/rockstar-games-disappeared-from-steam-then-came-back-1846717920
Earlier today all of Rockstar’s games temporarily disappeared from Steam, then quickly came back, likely down to a listing error. That’s fine, whatever, but when the games came back, some of them hadn’t been there in the first place.

While obvious Rockstar games like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption did the thing, when they returned they were joined—albeit very briefly—by the likes of Midnight Club 2 and the first two GTA games, all of which had long ago been delisted on the platform.

While the GTA games weren’t made available to buy, cult favourite Midnight Club 2 was, and folks were able to snap up the racing game for spare change in the minutes the game was live before Rockstar pulled it again.

Even though I'd never play it I kinda wish I knew enough to grab it anyway.

the "endgame problems" in monster hunter rise are

-you can't infinitely level your Hunter Rank
-there's no "Infinitely Scaling Attack/Health" monsters like the Tempered system in World

I started playing The Longing, and it is extremely my jam. There's something about its specific flavor of timeless melancholy that just feel like home to me.

...I'm not sure what that says about me.

Ironically, given how I typically play video games, it's entirely possible that I will play this regularly for a few weeks and then not come back to it for over a year, at which point I will have finished the game without ever seeing most of the content (unless I plan ahead and [REDACTED], I suppose). I guess we'll see

I can't figure out what one of the menu buttons does, though. The game doesn't tell you and I don't want to accidentally read spoilers trying to google it. It's the one that can toggle between a person at a... piano keyboard?... (active state) and a skeleton slumped at the same keyboard (inactive). It's right next to the brightness and sound controls. Does anyone know?

anyway a lot of talk about video game prices and stuff remind me of when people talk about how most indie games these days fail, and it's not like the old days when you could put out Braid and Super Meat Boy and Fez and the market was receptive to them

I don't remember their name but during WW2 the US had a mathematician doing analysis on returning aircraft early in the war and the popular notion was to increase armour on the sections of aircraft most often badly damaged but the dude made the point that it made more sense to up-armour the places returning aircraft hadn't been damaged

That's a game I've had on my wishlist for aaaaaages, mainly because it just feels a bit pricey for something you're meant to put a tiny amount of play into every day over the course of a year. Like, I know how my brain works, I won't have the patience to return to it after the first week, and 13 quid (or 10 on sale) is a bit stiff for experiencing a tiny percentage of a game.

I dunno if the steam version is 1:1 parity but the main menu should have a Check Online Content button that lets you download newGRFs. Basically the modding files for the game. It’s some scary early internet looking interfaces but internet searching the names should get you info on all of them.

For industry replacement FIRS is the typical big one.

I don’t know if this ever switched over so somebody could claim it. Last night it just showed "Loading ... ?" but I figured it was just a hiccup because I was the one that posted it, but it still showed that this morning.

ALSO! If you want to get yourself this same promo pack, Alienware Arena is giving them away. I usually dump the promo codes I don't need here, and sometimes their code giveaways are locked behind a higher level account (which you get from daily log ins and other stuff) but last night I missed that this one seems to be open to everybody. So just go make a free account and get you some.

Making good progress on Deadfire. The island framework is really cool, I think more games should do it. The exploration/survival aspect is done mostly at sea. You have a crew that has to be fed, watered, and paid. Water and hardtack keep them alive but not very happy. Decent food gives +0 Morale, and good food gives positive morale, as does winning ship combat, paying out the gold you win in ship combat, or successful events like whale hunts or seeing impressive landmarks. Things had been really smooth so last night I attempted two ill-advised seafaring events: crossing a reef and hunting a two-tusked whale-thing. Each resulted in the death of a crewmember. I had to swap in some bench crewmen and was running a nearly minimal crew. You can recruit new crew at port, and they're sometimes a reward from quests and events: people you rescue or humanoid monsters that make decent ship's crew. Right now I have an imp, an ogre, and a lagufeth (lizard-person) on crew. It doesn't seem to bother the kith crew?

I really like the Deadfire traveling around in a ship, yeah. It sort of splits the difference between like, the traversal of BG1 and the traversal of BG2, if that makes sense.

I wish the ship to ship combat was better (I think it's fine, but it's almost always in your best interest to just close in and handle things in the standard combat system, which is often a bit of a slog), but otherwise it's got a lot going for it.

Yeah, BG1 felt expansive because large parts of it were just a patchwork of wilderness maps. It was cool to find a random tree with a ring of protection in it, or see what happened when you went to the extreme southwest corner of the map (Gnolls!) or whatever. But you paid for that in a lot of trudging around, and back and forth fog of war clearing if you were really methodical. Lots of empty space.

In Deadfire, the empty space is obviously empty, you can just zero in on the islands. But being far from Neketaka still feels like being far from Neketaka, in some trackless jungle or volcanic wasteland.

And yeah, the ship to ship combat can largely be ignored. My ship sucks but my party is real badass. It never makes sense to duel with cannons, just board and fuck them up. You even get your inactive party members as non-controllable NPCs which is even more of a slaughter.

I think there are a few events where crew members won't get along, but only if their morale is below a certain threshold.

The random events were a lot of fun for me, and I sort of wish there were more that didn't have a clear optimal outcome - at some point you have enough resources to mitigate pretty much any setback, so they generally become a bit too easy.

Man, talking about Deadfire makes me want to replay Deadfire.

But I really wish that there were more palatable factions to work with in that game. I normally go with the Huana, who have their issues with the caste system but clearly are the people who should be in charge of the Deadfire. But if I want to work with anyone else, there's the pirates half of whom are slavers and murderers and the other half are just doing enough murder to make up the difference, or two different varieties of highly exploitative colonists (of which I guess the RDC is slightly better than the VTC, but they still are real fucked up).
