I thought everybody else might enjoy this as well! Got some real classics and blasts from the past on there, to get you fired up about the prospects for next season.
Oh, beware of SPOILERS in there, ESPECIALLY in the AMVs.
All this Evangelion talk is bringing reminiscence of what animes that were popular back on the day actually managed to last the test of time.
Man, I can't believe that people once thought that Elfen Lied was good*. Later there was Mirai Nikki, but it came later so more people righteously called it trash.
*I got very bored a couple of episodes in back on the day, but that was me.
The hyperviolence and excess of gore turned me off pretty quick.
There's a certain subset of shows that really appeal to want to be edgy teens. Lots of flashy violence, blood/gore, fan service/nudity, overall dark and edgy themes and tone, etc.
People still make shows like that. Peach Boy Riverside is the big one this season. They are just far more forgettable these days since the amount of actually good anime went waaay up since then.
I will never quite get why some people want to go back to the olden days of anime. Man, I was there, current era is way the fuck better. We're often getting multiple good animes per season! Makes it much easier to simply forget about all the trash.
Yeah it's technically a sequel in the sense that this has been happening over and over again until the end of this loop and the removal of all Eva from the reset world etc.
But that seemed like too deep a dig to just post out of spoiler.
The Unit 13 vs Unit 1 fight in the dream world looked so weird and off that it wasn't until the buildings started sliding around when knocked into and Unit 1 knocks up against the skybox drop cloth that it clicked for me that it's basically a tokusatsu set.
I definitely had a "what the hell this looks like horseshit" followed 20 seconds later by, "oh, OH, neat! I'll shut up now"
oh oh are we talking about AMVs as introductions to anime?
Then here's the greatest AMV ever made, from like 2003, where this level of editing was indistinguishable from magic. Also RahXephon is fucking amazing.

I was there, too. I disagree. I watch almost every series every season, too.
The average quality has gone up, but on a scale it's basically from D to C average. Yet the top end rarely reaches the same highs.
It's not an issue of raw quality, either. Technology, technique, and more experienced animators means the shows in general look better. Yet the content of the shows is generally, 'A good version of that show from 20~30 years ago.'
Very rarely is anything really trying to be new or interesting. There are exceptions, of course, but most shows live or die by their adherence to tropes and patterns codified in the 'golden age'.
To some people deep into the hobby, it isn't the best place to be. You end up sitting through your new shows with a genre bingo card and kind of tick it off as you go.
Not even just that, I think it's a preference in pacing. You can especially see it in some things like the first few episodes of Fruits Basket where the remake tried to use a lot of the same shots as the original. But they make far more cuts and swap the camera around much more often. It gives the show a more hyperactive feeling, in my opinion, and does a small disservice to the story. Nothing massive but definitely noticable.
LotGH and Orphen are more examples of old properties being done with modern sensibilities and I'm not into what either accomplished. Though they do look ok.
I could probably ramble about this for a lot longer but I'm at work so that's probably a bad thing to do. Anywho, just my piece.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 was incredible, I love it. It's the ending these films deserved.

Still making my way through Berserk, coming up to the Doldrey chapters
I continue to be amazed that each subsequent chapter, or even each subsequent page, is more beautifully drawn than the one before it. Miura's art is now completely unrecognizable from where he started in terms of skill and technique. His incredible attention to detail as well as his devotion to the subtleties of facial expression and body movement, is straight-up peerless
Heck, that he even takes the time to show a lot of expressions, or draw out certain scenes, separates him from the mile-a-minute pacing of his contemporaries! Like, sometimes half, or most, or all of a chapter is just a conversation between two people, and it only ends where it does because Miura ran out of space that week and it picks right up next time. He's so much more concerned with getting these scenes right, and pacing them a certain way, than he is with adhering to page limits
The writing ain't perfect, at least moment to moment, and I still don't know how I feel about certain plot beats involving Casca (and I haven't since I first saw the anime like eleven years ago) but it's more than compelling enough to draw me through art that's this fucking good
I hope they adapt Berserk to the screen again someday. The '97 show is real good, but I'd love to see another that's even better
Madoka Magia Record S2, Episode 3.
A lot of my concerns from the previous spoiler post are alleviated or outright gone. If this is a short season as I've been hearing, it seems like they could very well stick the landing.
Oh my God... they were roommates! Yeah, not that season 1 was subtle, but this show is very openly portraying Iroha and Yachiyo's relationship as a romance. I hope they put something literal and explicit in the dialogue before the end so that there's no wiggle room on that point. Glad to see an active, not tragically dead Madoka entering the plot as well. I hope Mami's villainous behavior is confronted in dialogue and she isn't just exploded in a fight scene, she's needed chastisement and correction ever since Homura's flashback episode 10 all the way back when.

I finished the rebuild series, I think my brain is a bit overloaded from having done this in a two day period because I’m not exactly sure how I feel about it all. Those last two movies definitely go for it that’s for sure.
Full Eva rebuild movies spoilers:
seriously what the fuck is Mari’s deal. Fuyutski called her Mari Iscariot, so is she a vampire? I gotta say the first time you see that picture of Yui and Gendo and there’s a mysterious new glasses wearing lady there made me go huh. I didn’t expect to actually be right. Also I was not expecting her to be the one Shinji ends up with either. There was a bit early on in 3+1 where Ritsuko said it’s been 16 years and that really threw me off, I couldn’t tell if they meant another 16 year time skip or if it’s been two years since the last movie(which seems improbable) in the end who knows. The way 3+1 incorporated both previous ends of evangelion I really liked. Which reminds me, more realistic giant Rei and realish(original?) Asuka creeped me out.
I will say one non-spoilery thing I didn’t like was the move to more digital control surfaces and the like. I know they’re both a product of their time but I really liked the big chunky analog buttons and displays and whatnot from the tv series.
Ok, I haven't watched Eva in like twenty years, so I binged all four Rebuild movies today. Nice mix of nostalgia and new stuff.
Can I get the movie that takes place between 2.22 and 3.33? A 2.66 or something?
Also,
The "next-time" previews after the credits just straight-up lie, huh? Is that because of years between movie releases, or intentional misleads or what?
Now I hope "Kine-san no 1-ri de Cinema" does a sequel Eva chapter.

I assumed it had been another two years. Otherwise all the characters are as ageless as the Eva pilots.
From reading a bit online, apparently Mari was initially added just to have a new female Eva pilot and they really struggled with what to do with her. Supposedly Anno later gave the voice actress for Mari some secret information about the character that she claims she'll never divulge.

Mari is in Gendo's flashbacks and seemed to have gone to school with him and Yui (and introduced them, I think?). I assumed she was involved in an early LCL test and got stuck with an unaging body that doesn't need to eat, just like Asuka later does.
Though I was also wondering if she might be aware of the time loops like Kowaru seemed to be.

Totally not Mark has been doing once a month in Berserk as a blind read, and I've really been enjoying it because he's noticing some body language narrative beats I overlooked (how he touches his nose scar in certain points, stuff like that).

The thing is, you’re going to tell me the Eva kids wandered for two years in the wasteland of Japan and didn’t die but spending a week in a village nearly killed them?
And yeah, I already looked on the evageeks wiki and saw they really had trouble figuring out what they were going to do with Mari.
I realized just a bit ago that this will probably be the only time in my life everyone else will be just as in the dark about what is going on as I am. No deep wiki analysis or big pamphlets of explanations and essays like with the platinum DVDs.

Yeah, having Shinji and company wandering around for years was weird. I had initially thought the story had flashbacked to when they were rescued, but as far as I can tell they were only in the village for a month or so before the preparations for the final battle.

Big Evangelion manga and 3.0+1.0 spoilers
In the final bonus chapter for the Eva manga adaption (which finished after 3.0 came out), it's a big flashback to Yui and Gendo's college days where we find out that Mari was their classmate and friend.
The scene in 3.0+1.0 where Mari cuts Asuka's hair directly parallels a similar one in the manga where Yui does the same for Mari.
At the time the official word was that Mari's inclusion in the manga was just fanservice (this is the only chapter she appears in), but it seems that they ended up using this idea as a basis for the Rebuild canon as well

so I feel like a lot of people (reasonably) memory-holed it, but that one odd duck berserk flashback arc from...2012 (oh god), "Spring Flowers of Days Long Past", really sticks out in my brain as Miura exploring, just for a little bit, what Berserk would look like if he could start over
It's one of the first arcs chronologically, where kid guts is taken prisoner and has his first encounter with the supernatural, a helpful flower spirit that he thinks he's hallucinating
it's really interesting because while i think the tone is a lot gentler in that arc, it's still a real bittersweet little story that works in a lot of important themes and even manages to touch on guts' own trauma response in a way that's more, uh, measured writing.
honestly I think one of the most fascinating things about Berserk is how naturally the story's tone changing is tied to the plot itself, but I definitely wondered a few times what an early berserk more in line with that one arc would have looked like

As far as Caska... On the one hand, she like 500% gets fridged during the eclipse. On the other hand it makes thematic sense in the story and there's a lot more to it than just, "They messed with my girl and now they'll pay." It's kinda the opposite if anything, Guts at his most revenge-focused is failing Caska and becoming a worse human being.
Like I don't debate that the trope itself is bad, but I think in this case it's well executed.
Full Eva rebuild movies spoilers:
I will say one non-spoilery thing I didn’t like was the move to more digital control surfaces and the like. I know they’re both a product of their time but I really liked the big chunky analog buttons and displays and whatnot from the tv series.

Can I get the movie that takes place between 2.22 and 3.33? A 2.66 or something?
Also,
Now I hope "Kine-san no 1-ri de Cinema" does a sequel Eva chapter.
From reading a bit online, apparently Mari was initially added just to have a new female Eva pilot and they really struggled with what to do with her. Supposedly Anno later gave the voice actress for Mari some secret information about the character that she claims she'll never divulge.
Eva 3+1 spoilers:
And yeah, I already looked on the evageeks wiki and saw they really had trouble figuring out what they were going to do with Mari.
I realized just a bit ago that this will probably be the only time in my life everyone else will be just as in the dark about what is going on as I am. No deep wiki analysis or big pamphlets of explanations and essays like with the platinum DVDs.

Big Evangelion manga and 3.0+1.0 spoilers
The scene in 3.0+1.0 where Mari cuts Asuka's hair directly parallels a similar one in the manga where Yui does the same for Mari.
At the time the official word was that Mari's inclusion in the manga was just fanservice (this is the only chapter she appears in), but it seems that they ended up using this idea as a basis for the Rebuild canon as well
so I feel like a lot of people (reasonably) memory-holed it, but that one odd duck berserk flashback arc from...2012 (oh god), "Spring Flowers of Days Long Past", really sticks out in my brain as Miura exploring, just for a little bit, what Berserk would look like if he could start over
honestly I think one of the most fascinating things about Berserk is how naturally the story's tone changing is tied to the plot itself, but I definitely wondered a few times what an early berserk more in line with that one arc would have looked like
