    What an awesome film.

A very imaginative film with a bonkers voice-cast (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Clancy Brown, J.K. Simmons, Tress MacNeille, Kevin Michael Richardson, John DiMaggio, Brian Posehn, and Maurice LaMarche as the Narrator).

Also, need some folks to put together this look for a cosplay one day:

Star studded voice acting credits always sort of fail to impress me only because Acting and Voice Acting are such different disciplines

I mean, granted, I'm happy to hear Clancy Brown in anything but at this point he's more of a voice actor than anything else

And of course I've already laid out my grievances with Scoob multiple times

This is why I wish they’d redub the ghibli movies with voice actors

Most of the Marvel characters in What If are voiced by their movie actors, and almost every single one of them sounds off. Not enough to ruin things if you're already into the episode, but noticeable

A lot of it is low energy, but occasionally they go a little too broad with it like they're playing to the cheap seats, and it's weird to hear them basically doing a caricature of themselves

Edit: another good example is the first Dishonored, which had some big names in the cast who were very poorly directed for voice work

Yeah I forgot that but Del Toro is probably the worst case, he seemed to have just totally forgotten how he played the Collector before and they never showed him a clip to remind him

I can understand the desire to want animated films to exclusively feature voice actors.

I don't particularly agree with it entirely, but it is a position I can understand.

I think there are certain studios who utilize traditional, physical actors very well within their animated features (Studio Ghibli and Pixar come to mind).

Like, I get not wanting anymore Shark Tale films in which the character work is designed around a celebrity-casting, but I don't think you are going to get a noticeable difference in quality if you subbed out Cloris Leachman for Tress MacNeille in Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky.

Hang on, I could tell Madsen and Dourif did voices in that, but they had others?

Piero Joplin in particular was an example of just astoundingly bad voice direction for an otherwise good actor.

But also, dubbing an existing foreign film is different than doing voice acting for an American production that is going to animate around your performance.

Some actors can do good voice acting. Some actors just... can't. Maybe something is missing, maybe some element of physicality is needed, or maybe it's just a garbage voice director (side note: the world has no idea how much it owes Andrea Romano).

She is an incomparable voice director and it super sucks she had to retire early due to losing her sight.

I recall the mononoke dub being good for the time, but not amazing. A few folks do well and a few are just… fine.

Though I like mononoke a bit more in Japanese with subs, just fits it well for me. But that’s just personal preference.

Porco Rosso has a decent dub. You get fucking MICHAEL KEATON being all gravely voiced like he does best.

I’d rather watch Ghibli with subs, but I can’t figure out how to make HBO Max do that. The only options I can get it to do are Japanese with no subs or English dub with English subs, which is not helpful.
