Crown the Empire has that abrasive hardcore edge but is verging on industrial here. Good to see them kind of experimenting out of their cookie cutter metalcore roots.
New music video from the upcoming Der Weg Einer Freiheit album. Markedly different from pretty much every song they've ever written (clean vocals!). They're one of my most hype bands, really looking forward to the full length.
Loving the new Sarke, the new Gaahls Wyrd EP is also pretty good.
Would it really be Saxon if it looked, you know, other than that way? If I said "I admire their consistency," which Saxon song or album would you guess I was talking about?
It's impossible to tell.
But in the best possible way!

Jeez, Amazon's been really poor with delivering new releases on time lately. I preordered Lucifer's new album a few weeks before its release and they just sent me a shipping estimate of early December. Part of the supply line issues, I guess.
Heh. It's mostly AOR-sounding stuff like Lion did for the Transformers flick in the 80s, couple okay riffs and leads, but it's a pretty damn elaborate thing to add to the game for a character, and it kind of fits his sense of humor, so kudos for that.
Bandcamp Friday! Fen Walker has a new album if you like metal-adjacent Dungeon Synth, and his whole discography is up for six bucks (auto gotta have me those FLACs).

Picked up the old maudlin of the Well demo Through Languid Veins on bandcamp today because I didn't realize it had become available digitally. Yay, no more having to break out my cassette player! Honestly, it's probably been at least a decade since I heard it. My cassette player is stored away in a closet at the moment. Also bought the new Kayo Dot
Bought a Seven Kingdoms album too since I enjoyed them live back in September.

Yes, please. I'm always down to listen to new dungeon synth.

Addi from Solstafir's crust punk project Bastarður has released its full length album and doesn't seem bad so far.
I too love that Pharaoh album. I remember it dropped on the same day as the Helloween, and it was quite obvious on day 1 which I preferred.
Only just got round to the new Pharaoh, "Be Gone" is probably my favourite power metal album (let's give it equal first place with "Nightfall in Middle Earth") and I think this is a lot closer than "Bury the Light" was.

Tried the new Mastodon over the weekend, got about half way through before switching off. Just felt kinda shapeless and boring? I've been reading there are some disagreements or something in the band, maybe they should give it a rest for a while.
Funny, not all the songs hit for me, and it's too long, but I think this is their best album since Crack the Skye. Of course, for my money I think it's been all chaff since then anyways (with the exception of One More... which was alright).

I dug the hell out of Emperor of Sand and Cold Dark Place, but I think their effort on a double disc ended up the same way every double disc does: Even with all the good stuff, there's just more filler than normal.
I really want to like Omnium Gatherum's new album but I think I'm just struggling to get back into Finnish melodeath sound. The bands are all starting to sound kind of interchangeable. Having said that, the guitar work is pretty good.

I really like the new Mastodon as well, I just think if they cut a few of the tracks in the dead center it would've been a better album.

I enjoyed at least two of the tracks, including the one that was posted on the last page, but I found it such a slog. I feel like they're really overdoing Brann's 'haunting vocal' thing. It was really effective in 2009, less so now.
It may be a grower, and enough people seem to like it that I'll give it another spin at some point, but ultimately I think its just going on the pile of the 'other' albums that aren't the classic three.
Loved the Boris and Saxon posted here. Boris remains my favourite live experience, because I had no idea who they were going in and in a disused church was treated to two sets, the first baller 70s riff rock and the second absolutely crushing drone. Mind blowing stuff.

First song release by The Halo Effect, which is made up of a bunch of former In Flames members with Mikael Stanne on vocals, who I guess is also technically a former In Flames member.

Brann remains a low point for me with Mastodon's music. It's neat he can drum and sing at the same time but I don't think he does either particularly well. I think I'd prefer their music if he kept quiet and focused on making the drumming more interesting and punchy (which is something I think they've lacked since CtS). It also doesn't help that Troy has such an interesting and unique sounding voice that matches the rest of the band's sound so well. And more Brann = less Troy and Brent which I think hurts my enjoyment of their newer stuff a lot.
As for Boris, big agree there. I saw them the first time with a buddy when they were doing the 10 year anniversary for Pink tour some time back and they're super fun live (their instagram page is a good time as well). And NO was suuuuuuuuch a good album. I'm looking forward to the new record.
This one is a bit rustic sounding for lack of a better word. Sounds like a band that the event organizers of the local Oktoberfest dug up at the last minute and paid for with free beer. I think the acoustic guitar shows up about as often as the electric.
All in all, another solid album. I think I like it more than their last one.

Yeah, bang on. I've enjoyed some bits of each album since Crack the Skye - I really liked the Cold Dark Place ep for whatever reason - I just think they were better as a long-format band, with big but defined concepts.
Good shout on the Boris insta. Its literally a decade since I skated last and I wasn't good then, but I have a mighty need for a deck with the Flood artwork on.
I've actually been digging the latest few Boris things too, is it just me or have they grown more busy and musical than some of their more droney stuff?

Actually reviewed that one by request of the guitarist (plus I've done all the others so it made sense to catch up).

Also, Bewitcher's van broke down (no merc booth and they had to go last) and Creeping Death broke one of their guitars. Exhumed was fucking wild too.
Great show. First time back at the local metal bar since the pandemic started.

I've been listening to extreme metal for over a decade now, and I still haven't the foggiest idea how the human body can make sounds like these.
That tunnel scream at the very end of the song is still inhuman to me.

Sounds OK, albeit closer to modern Dark Tranquillity than any era of In Flames I'm familiar with.

Also in the 'OK' range, I kinda feel the same about this as I do about Nick doing vocals in Bloodbath.
