Hey, the only thing I don't like about that picture is that there are at least two Mercyful Fate shirts missing (I'd say three, but one has a decent excuse).
The guy in the top left looks like he showed up first in the Mercyful Fate shirt for photo day and was so excited to wear it, but then bottom right guy showed up and refused to change.
Huh, a friend sent me a link today and the album cover kind of reminded me of this band I listened to years ago but had a hard time remembering them. Turns out it was Grorr who I haven't thought about since 2014 when their last album came out.
And as it happens they released a new album earlier this year. Very proggy and kind of laid back. Haven't listened to much of it yet but it's worth a look I'd say:
Atmospheric Black Metal from Vancouver. This single is from their second album, the first album The Transformation Room is also very good.
Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
It's interesting but a little all over the place. Then again I could say the same for the last Kadavar album in general, I hope in the future they're turning back towards the style from the three records before it which was awesome.
Huh, Martin Axenrot is out of Opeth due to "a conflict of interests" and they're subbing in Therion's drummer for the US tour which starts today.
Huh, I wonder what this will mean for their sound. I think the band's sound and style shifted dramatically when Akesson and Axenrot replaced Lindgren and Lopez, to the point that I started to wonder if it was actually Lindgren and Lopez that were the driving force behind the Opeth sound for my favourite records.
I'm actually curious about what their next record will sound like.
New Star One song featuring Brittney from Unleash the Archers and Michael Romeo. It's a song about The Terminator:
Opening few notes, mental jukebox immediately starts singing (in the voice of Tarja): "In sleep he sang to me, in dreams he came..."
But dear Christ that gets going, doesn't it. Awesome stuff.
One of the busiest riffs and basslines I've heard from Arjen, very in line with SymphX's Iconoclast and Romeo's solo album and a great fit for the lyrical content and Mike killed the solo. The way he can play an ascending scale run via tapping and then short decending sweeps right after is humbling. But watching him always give me hope for what my own playing could reach, considering we have near identical stretches and neither one of us can palm a bowling ball like George Lynch.
Wonder is this song was originally written with Russel Allen in mind, considering most every guest spot on any of Arjen's projects Michael has done was a song with Russel either the only singer or part of an esemble on.

Time to also dip into the new Exodus, Obscura, Swallow the Sun, and the first full-length from Schizophrenia which I am excited for. Khemmis and Lurking Fear too I think.

Zeal & Ardor has a third full album coming out in February, and it looks like it's self-titled. Based on the songs he's put out so far, it sounds like he's screaming a lot more compared to the previous album.
In the market for some artsy, atmospheric death/doom? This one slightly missed the mark a little for me but I do appreciate the style it's going for with the clean gothy guitars, etc, and it does have its moments.

I went to the Opeth/Mastodon show in DC last night. Zeal & Ardor opened; half their songs were from their upcoming new album, which I am less familiar with. They played nothing off their first album. It was good, as always, although the sound was way too bass heavy. I could barely hear Manuel whenever he did growls/screams.
To my delight, Opeth went on next. They played 8 songs and covered a variety of their eras, although they only played one song from their most recent album. The sound was a little better compared to Zeal & Ardor, but there were some points where the drums were really overpowering the rest of the music -- like actively distorting it. Their substitute drummer did an OK job, and I didn't think I'd notice the difference, but I definitely did during the closing part of "Deliverance" which lacked the intricacies I've come to enjoy from that closing bit.
Mastodon were next, but my wife and I have never gotten into that band, so we left the venue at 9:15, made it home by around 10, and managed to get a good night's sleep.
Probably not going to another show for a few more months at this point.

The rock never stops...new stuff from Hypocrisy, Rhapsody of Fire, In Mourning, Lock Up, Negura Bunget, and I've been awaiting this debut from Morgul Blade too, kind of a blackened heavy/epic/doom metal style.
HOLY...that new Lordi boxed set is SEVEN new albums...they kept busy during lockdown...at least one of the albums is disco, pretty funny, I guess each is a different genre.

They want to keep their options open for whatever Finland might be looking to enter in Eurovision 2022.

Nuke Blast is running their great Holiday sale, lots of stuff if you wanna fill out your Blind Guardian, Soilwork discographies and a few others, but keep in mind the shipping is absurd (prepare to add a couple bucks for each item, or 30-40% to your order...yeah) so it's not quite so cheap as you'd think.

Yeah, I bought stuff from them and Earache in the last week. Nuclear Blast:
I already owned the Blind Guardian stuff, but these are the remastered versions.
Earache:
Mainly filling in some gaps here. Covenant was the first Morbid Angel album I ever heard, and "Rapture" was the first time I ever heard death metal. I did not like it at all at the time.
We will soon be out of room for CDs in this place, at least in the designated racks.

I listened to the new Unleashed too but found it very middling.
Not one, but two, Mercyful Fate shirts. Glorious.

Haven't listened the new Archgoat yet, but I'm pretty sure I know what it's gonna sound like.
The Obscura and Schizophrenia records definitely deliver what you'd want from those bands.
The Archgoat is actually pretty good.
Just discovered this, it fuckin' rules.
